New USF quarterback Gerry Bohanon already knows the first thing he will do Thursday when he walks into the Bulls' first-team huddle for the first time. He's going to smile. "As a quarterback, when the guys see that poise, that confidence, that smile … I feel like it's a sense of relief," Bohanon said. Bohanon's poise, confidence and, yes, smile, were on full display Wednesday in his first news conference since transferring from Baylor. Seven minutes behind a lectern at media day were enough to see why the Bulls had to take the former Bears passer and why he's a serious threat to unseat Timmy McClain as USF's starter.

He said the right things about wanting to be "the best version of myself every day." He showed passion, describing the chills he felt during Tuesday's team meeting. He talked up the competition among quarterbacks with everything from X's and O's discussions to offseason workouts. He deflected praise and, clearly, believes in himself and the locker room. None of which should surprise coach Jeff Scott. Scott wasn't looking to add a transfer quarterback this offseason and would only pursue a perfect fit - a knowledgeable veteran who has played at a high level and would add immediate leadership without damaging the culture he has spent two years building. "I think adding Gerry to that room has checked all of those boxes," Scott said. - Tampa Tribune

It is the biggest question for the future of BYU. Will this season be the last for the fifth-year quarterback? Jaren Hall smiled and gave the most honest answer on the topic yet. "Since I was a little kid I've thought about the NFL," he told The Salt Lake Tribune. "If I'm being honest, I'm not going to sit here and say, 'I never think about the NFL.' That's my dream right? Since I was a kid." For the typically reserved Hall, it was a glimpse into his thinking - a rare near acknowledgment that this season really could be his last in Provo. Still, the quarterback's priority is on the present. "Now I realize that if it is going to happen, it's going to happen," Hall said of his NFL aspirations. "I don't need to worry about when that is. I just need to worry about my summer right now and getting better. And taking care of business against USF." Hall starts this year in a much different spot than last year. He is the incumbent starter now, and a dark horse candidate to be a first-round NFL draft pick.

After throwing for 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns in his first year, the buzz is starting to grow around him. ESPN already has him slotted as high as the No. 9 pick in next year's draft. If Hall can knock off Baylor at home and then Oregon on the road in the first three weeks of the season - both nationally televised games - that could be all Hall needs to grab that NFL attention. "I don't love the lights, the cameras. I'm not a big fan of all the talk," Hall said of his name potentially leaping into NFL conversations. "But I'm different from a lot of guys. A lot of guys enjoy that stuff and that is fine. "I'm going to work in silence regardless, whether [my name gets thrown in there] or not. I'm going to still make sure I'm ready." - Salt Lake Tribune

The player who holds the top spot on the list may be unexpected but his impact might be truly monumental for the Cougar program. Few might point to a defensive lineman as the player who would be the most significant for BYU in 2022, but they would be overlooking just what a player like Batty could mean to the Cougar defense. First of all, in addition to 56 total tackles Batty has 7.5 sacks in the last two seasons, which leads the team. While that number isn't all that impressive, it shows his potential to be a disruptor in the backfield. Also, don't underestimate the leader Batty has become on the defensive side of the ball for BYU. He is a vocal, charismatic athlete who can be key in getting everyone on that side of the ball to excel. - Daily Herald

While Jaren Hall's numbers in 2021 weren't going to put him in the BYU quarterback record books, they showed a solid level of performance throughout the year: 10 games, 189-of-296 passing for 2,583 yards, 20 TDs, 5 interceptions, 62 rushes, 307 yards, 3 TDs. Most importantly, he had an 8-2 record, which is pretty good for a first-year starter. Now he heads into 2022 with a host of weapons, an experienced line and extensive knowledge of what the Cougar offense can do. The reality is, however, that he has to step up and take advantage of the circumstances for BYU to truly be the team it is capable of being. If he does (and stays healthy), don't be surprised if the former Maple Mountain star gets plenty of recognition and is off to the NFL next year. - Daily Herald

When will Pitt coach PattNarduzzi name a starting QB? We all know college coaches don't like to give anything away, and Narduzzi's no exception. That brings us to Kenny Pickett's successor. You have to figure it's Kedon Slovis' job to lose after the former Pac-12 freshman of the year transferred in from USC. But Nick Patti won't make it easy on him, and Narduzzi will lean into the competition storyline as long as he can. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Whenever the Cougars needed to put a game away late during the 2021 season, they inevitably turned to running back Tyler Allgeier to get the job done - and he always came through. Now Allgeier is with the Atlanta Falcons and it appears that role will go to Brooks, who transferred from Cal. Brooks, who had 1,734 yards rushing with 14 touchdowns and 50 catches for 345 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver in 40 games with the Bears, showed enough during spring to get the nod as BYU's starting running back. Now that confidence has to be rewarded. Brooks will have veteran offensive line as well as bruising fullbacks to open up holes, so now he just has to perform. - Daily Herald
