  10/08/19 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis will return from an apparent concussion to start for Southern California at No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday night. USC coach Clay Helton made the announcement Tuesday night after practice. The Trojans (3-2) have had three starting quarterbacks in their first five games thanks to injuries, and the 18-year-old Slovis has missed most of the past two games. After being medically cleared to return, Slovis will get the shot to lead USC against the powerhouse Irish in the schools' famed intersectional rivalry game.

"There's not that much more you can ask for," Slovis said. "It's Notre Dame and USC...They're a good team, obviously one of the best teams in the nation, but Coach Helton is going to put together a great game plan for us." Slovis got hurt on a heavy hit during the opening series of USC's win over then-No. 10 Utah on Sept. 20. He sat out of a loss at Washington on Sept. 28 for the Trojans, who had last week off. "He does not look out of form to me," Helton said of Slovis, who threw to receivers during the Trojans' week off. "He looks really good, and we'll continue through the week. Today, I thought he was very decisive with his decision-making. So hopefully that continues and he carries it to South Bend." - AP College Football

BYU's leading rusher Ty'Son Williams confirmed that the knee injury he suffered on Saturday against Washington will cost him the rest of the year on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Williams went down in the first half of BYU's 45-19 loss to Washington and the injury looked to be significant immediately after it happened. - 247 Sports

BYU running back Ty'Son Williams did not play in the second half after suffering an apparent knee injury late in the second quarter. The injury occurred after he caught a 16-yard pass for a first down at the Washington 31. Williams finished with 28 yards on six carries and 17 yards on two receptions. With the senior on the sidelines for the final two quarters, BYU mustered just 79 total rushing yards and averaged 2.9 yards per carry. "He's a workhorse, he just runs so hard. He wants us to succeed. That one hurt," Bushman said. BYU had no immediate update on the severity of Williams' injury or how much time he's expected to miss. - AP College Football

  09/14/19 - *Zach WilsonJr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-2, 214 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Dayan Ghanwoloku intercepted a tipped pass in overtime after Jake Oldroyd kicked a 43-yard field to give BYU the lead, and the Cougars beat No. 24 Southern California 30-27 on Saturday, their second straight OT victory over a traditional power program. Zach Wilson threw for 280 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score for BYU (2-1), which won at Tennessee last week. Ty'Son Williams added 99 yards on 19 carries. Kedon Slovis threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns for USC (2-1), but was picked off three times, including on the final play of the game. After a week in which USC athletic director Lynn Swann stepped down, coach Clay Helton absorbed a loss that will certainly raise the heat on him going into a crucial stretch of schedule.

The Trojans play No. 11 Utah at home Friday, and then follow with road games against No. 23 Washington and No. 7 Notre Dame. Ghanwoloku, a defensive back who moonlights as a running back, scored the first touchdown for BYU on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. The Trojans went up 24-17 on a 30-yard TD catch by Michael Pittman, Jr. early in the fourth quarter. USC went 92 yards in 13 plays after stopping Ghanwoloku for a 1-yard gain on 4th-and-2 from the Trojan 9. Wilson gave the Cougars a 27-24 lead with 5:41 left in the quarter on a 16-yard run that was set up when the quarterback evaded a sack to hit Gunner Romney with a 35-yard pass. Chase McGrath tied it up on a 52-yard field goal for USC with 1:43 left in regulation. - BYU Football

Not many freshmen get to climb the stepladder, hold up the sword and lead the Southern California band in a postgame victory party at the Coliseum. No Trojans freshman quarterback has ever had a debut start like Kedon Slovis, who turned a tough matchup against Stanford into a celebration of his burgeoning talent. Slovis passed for 377 yards and three touchdowns in a commanding performance, and USC rolled to a 45-20 victory over the No. 23 Cardinal on Saturday night. Slovis went 28 of 33 and set the school record for yards passing in a freshman's first start as the Trojans (2-0, 1-0 Pac-12) rallied from an early 14-point deficit to beat the Cardinal (1-1, 1-1) for the third time in the California private schools' last four meetings. - AP College Football

  09/07/19 - TySon WilliamsrSr/2020, Brigham Young, 5-11, 220 (DS#41 RB) + More +

Ty'Son Williams scored a 5-yard touchdown run in the second overtime after BYU made a stunning drive for a game-tying field goal in the closing seconds of regulation as the Cougars edged Tennessee 29-26 on Saturday. BYU (1-1) rallied from a 13-3 halftime deficit and forced overtime when Zach Wilson's 64-yard completion to Micah Simon set up Jake Oldroyd's third field goal of the night - a 33-yarder with one second left. The Cougars got the ball first in overtime and scored on Zach Wilson's 14-yard touchdown pass to Talon Shumway. Tennessee tied it when Jarrett Guarantano found Jauan Jennings across the middle for a 13-yard completion.

Tennessee opened the second overtime session by settling for Brent Cimaglia's fourth field goal of the night, a 40-yarder that gave the Vols a 26-23 lead. BYU then sealed the win on Williams' bruising touchdown run. The South Carolina graduate transfer appeared to be stopped just a few yards short of the end zone, but he kept running and finally got across the goal line with some help from his linemen. Williams ended the night with 92 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Wilson was 19 of 29 for 232 yards. - AP College Football

Christopher Brown Jr. had never been called into a postgame press conference before so the California running back needed a little help to get settled in. The way Brown ran the ball in the Golden Bears season opener, he might as well get used to it. Brown rushed for a career-high 197 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries in his first start, and California overcame a sloppy first half and beat UC Davis 27-13 on Saturday. "We were trained for this and we were overly prepared for this," Brown said. "That played a big role in how many touches we get, how many plays we get. It's really the guys up front that made the holes. I just ran. They blocked."

Brown, a seldom-used backup to Patrick Laird last season, provided the biggest spark and became the first Cal running back to go over 100 yards in his first start since Jahvid Best in 2008. "We knew Chris would get the ball a lot," Bears coach Justin Wilcox said. "That's what we expect of him. He's a big, physical guy and this is his type of game. Give it to him and let him break tackles. Probably more touches and more yards than he had all last year. He's been preparing for this." That was critical on a day when Cal's passing game was hit-and-miss for most of the afternoon. Quarterback Chase Garbers shrugged off two turnovers and completed 16 of 28 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, both to Kekoa Crawford. Greg Thomas kicked a pair of field goals, including a career-best 47-yarder, as the Golden Bears won their third consecutive opener under Wilcox. - AP College Football

Saturday was the first chance BYU coaches and players got a first-hand look at what running back Ty'Son Williams can do against a live defense. The grad transfer from South Carolina obviously made an impression during a 107-play scrimmage at LaVell Edwards Stadium, as did fellow backs Lopini Katoa and Emmanuel Esukpa, another grad transfer. "I had him (Williams) break the team (huddle) because he stuck out today," BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said. "He's really starting to feel more comfortable in the program. He did some really good things today. Lopini, Ty'Son and Emmanuel all did some good things today. From what I can tell and how I can evaluate, I think the guy is a special player."

Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes gave his evaluation of Williams' performance. "He's exactly what we're looking for in a back," Grimes said. "He's an all-purpose back. He can run, he can catch, he can block and he's a willing blocker. A lot of tailbacks don't like that. He showed the ability today to break a tackle or make a guy miss. You think you have that in a back but you don't really know until you go live. A couple of the other backs did the same thing, but he (Williams) certainly did a nice job." - Daily Herald
