  09/04/20 - Matt BushmanrSr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-5, 245 (DS#14 TE) + More +

The injury bug hit BYU in a big way Monday when senior tight end Matt Bushman was lost for the season to a lower-leg injury, as confirmed by the Cougars in a statement on Tuesday. It was a tough blow for his teammates, particularly those fellow seniors who have dealt with their own devastating injuries. "Honestly, it's an emotional topic," BYU senior safety Troy Warner said during Tuesday's media teleconference. "Matt Bushman is one of the greatest guys I've ever met, one of the greatest players I've ever played with. For him to go through what he is going through, I kind of feel him in a sense because I've had a major injury. But for him to be a senior and be going through this right now, it's tough. We're just trying to do anything and everything we can to be there for him during this time. He is in our prayers. He is huge to this family and I know he'll contribute anyway he can this year."

Cougar senior defensive back/linebacker Zayne Anderson echoed similar sentiments and said ever since he saw Bushman get hurt he felt a pit in his stomach. "You feel for him, for his wife Emily and everyone in the family," Anderson said. "You see how these guys work. I don't think a lot of people know what it is like to go down for the whole season with an injury, so when they go through it you feel the pain with them. Seeing him down put a pit in my stomach and all last night I was thinking about him. It makes me sick and I hate seeing stuff like that." - Daily Herald

  09/03/20 - Matt BushmanrSr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-5, 245 (DS#14 TE) + More +

Having Bushman out for what could be 4-6 months will greatly change the Cougars' plans as they are less than a week away from the season opener at Navy, Sept. 7. In early August, offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said he had seen great improvement from Bushman. "Guys that are coming back for their senior year, sometimes they improve a little and sometimes they take a big jump - and I've really been impressed with the jump that he's taken," Grimes said. "He's had great ball skills since the day that he probably first touched the ball, so that's never been an issue for him, but running good routes and becoming a consistent blocker have been two things that I can see he's worked on a lot. He looks stronger to me. He looks more fluid. And I think he's doing both of those things better." Bushman led the team in receiving yards each of the last three years and joined Gordon Hudson and Dennis Pitta as the only BYU tight ends with three consecutive 500-yard seasons. In 2019, Bushman posted 47 receptions, 688 yards and four touchdowns. With Bushman out for an undisclosed amount of time, Isaac Rex will move into the starting position. - Salt Lake Tribune

  09/02/20 - *Zach WilsonJr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-2, 214 (DS#2 QB) + More +

When the BYU football team released its first official depth chart on Monday, it shouldn't have been very surprising to see junior Zach Wilson's name as the starting quarterback. After all, he has played in 18 games in his career, far more than any other QB on the Cougar roster, and therefore was the odds-on favorite. But BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said on Monday's Coordinator's Corner show that Wilson's previous experience didn't come into play in the decision. "I would say the best thing is that he earned the job based on what he did in fall camp," Grimes said. "We didn't have to look at the larger sample size because he earned it in fall camp for a couple of reasons. No. 1, he is healthier than he has been, healthier than anytime last year. He is also further ahead in his mental game. He did a lot during the down time to increase his knowledge of the game. I was really impressed."

Wilson said in the BYU media teleconference that getting the nod over talented competition like Cougar sophomores Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney validates the effort he has put in. "It leaves doubt," Wilson said. "It shows your coaches and your teammates that you are willing to work for it. I think that is how every spot in football should be. You have to earn the right to play. Competition makes everyone better and I think that's what we got out of this whole process. The coaches want to play the best players they can and competition brings out the best player in everybody." - Daily Herald

  09/01/20 - Matt BushmanrSr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-5, 245 (DS#14 TE) + More +

Before the pandemic shook the college football world, BYU tight end Matt Bushman made the decision to forego the NFL Draft and come back to Provo for his final season. COVID-19 threatened BYU's schedule, but the Cougars have found a way to play. But the season is over for Bushman. BYU confirmed the senior would be sidelined this season on Tuesday. "BYU senior tight end Matt Bushman suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in practice Monday and will miss the 2020 football season," the press release said. - Salt Lake Tribune

  07/30/20 - Khyiris TongaSr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-2, 325 (DS#12 DT) + More +

Senior Khyiris Tonga will look to lead the charge this year after almost leaving the program early to enter the NFL Draft. Tonga, who was named to the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, which is awarded to the nation's most outstanding defensive player, has played 39 career games with 21 starts. In 2019, he made 45 total tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss. Tonga is also on the 2020 Outland Trophy Watch List. Defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki said, the moment Tonga decided to come back to Provo, the defensive lineman started working his butt off. That was in January, leading up to spring ball.

"He looked like a different guy," Tuiaki said. "For me, I was really excited that he made the decision to come back because now he looks like what an NFL D-tackle should look like and he is playing with a lot more confidence in the way he is aligning and playing off things. When he was playing in practice, he was really disruptive, and that is what you want to see from someone of that caliber." Tonga will be a key cog. But because the defense rotates constantly, depth will be key to having a successful line. That could be provided in part by 6-3, 287-pound redshirt senior Bracken El-Bakri and 6-5, 260-pound freshman Tyler Batty. - Salt Lake Tribune
