BYU has started the 2020 season 4-0, which is the first 4-0 start since the 2014 season. The Cougars have not started 5-0 since the 2008 season when they won their first six games of the year. This is also the best start under head coach Kalani Sitake. The previous best was in 2018 when BYU started 3-1. BYU had a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver for the second time this season. Wide receiver Dax Milne had seven catches for 102 receiving yards against the Roadrunners, while Tyler Allgeier ended up with 116 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown. - Daily Herald

BYU linebackers coach Ed Lamb felt like senior linebacker Isaiah Kaufusi had one of his best games during the 27-20 Cougar win over UTSA at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday. "I thought he played with his hair on fire," Lamb said on the Coordinator's Corner show on Monday. "Where he elevated his play in this last game that I have not seen him do before is his contact courage. He completely flew by one of the pulling offensive linemen and took down the running back. I thought he inspired the guys to hang in there and keep adjusting. He is a valuable, valuable leader for us."

It's often when things aren't going well or when a team isn't performing at the highest level that leaders are needed the most. That is why this is a big time for the BYU team leaders both during Saturday's closer-than-expected victory and also now preparing to head on the road for a big test at Houston on Friday night (7:30 p.m MT, ESPN). "I think it is important as a leader to keep the guys level-headed, even when the emotions are high in a game," Cougar senior safety Troy Warner said during Monday's press conference. "It's important to keep our heads in it, help them not to dwell on it. It's about what they can do to be better. We dealt with some adversity during that game but I'm glad we were able to grind out the win." - Daily Herald

Zach Wilson threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns and Tyler Allgeier rushed 116 yards and another score to lead No. 15 BYU past UTSA 27-20 on Saturday. The Cougars (4-0) equaled their best start since 2014 while rolling up 472 yards. Allgeier posted his second 100-yard game of his career to help rescue an inconsistent BYU offense. Lowell Narcisse threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns – all after halftime – on 17-of-20 passing to lead the Roadrunners. UTSA (3-2) became the first opponent to give BYU a four-quarter test, but fell short of earning the upset, despite averaging 7.6 yards per play in the second half.

BYU trailed for the first time this season when UTSA took a 3-0 lead on a 39-yard field goal from Hunter Duplessis in the first quarter. The Cougars, who came in averaging 49 points per game, short circuited a couple of times in the opening quarter, fumbling at the UTSA 10 and failing to convert on fourth-and-6 from the Roadrunner 40. It was first quarter this season that BYU did not score a touchdown. - BYU/AP College Football

Cougar quarterback Zach Wilson had another tremendous performance, going 24-of-26 for 325 yards passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had 43 yards rushing on eight carries with three scores. "He ran the ball well," Sitake said. "We've been really excited to get Zach going. We've seen him do it in spurts. We know that when you have a guy with a great work ethic who is willing to sacrifice a lot for his teammates, it becomes natural for everyone to want to follow him. Eventually it is going to pay off. I'm really happy with what Zach did."

Wilson started the game with 12 straight completions before having a pass fall to the ground and when he got locked in, he was placing the ball flawlessly. "It's satisfying to see guys make plays," Wilson said. "I feel like the work we put in the offseason, the practices leading up to the game, the talk back and forth of where I'm going to go against which defense, I feel like we were on the same page all night. We were having a strong connection and guys were just making plays. I was just putting the ball up there, letting guys go make plays and they were getting it done." - Daily Herald

Wilson has completed 84.5% of his passes through his first three games. The junior's efficient passing, combined with stingy defense, helped BYU take control before halftime.   Zach Wilson threw for a career-high 392 yards and two touchdowns, leading No. 18 BYU to a 48-7 victory over Troy on Saturday night. Wilson's previous career high was 317 passing yards against Western Michigan in the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Against Troy, he completed 23 of 28 passes and rushed for a pair of touchdowns while helping the Cougars (2-0) pile up 664 total yards on offense. It was the most total yards BYU posted against an FBS opponent since recording 681 yards against Houston in 2013. The junior credited his teammates for turning routine plays into something special. Dax Milne and Gunner Romney combined for more than 250 receiving yards. Milne led BYU with a career-high 140 yards and a touchdown on a career-best seven catches. Romney added a career-high 138 yards on five receptions. They gave the Cougars a pair of 100-yard receivers in the same game for the first time since 2015. Troy (1-1) simply could not keep up with BYU after the first quarter. Gunnar Wilson threw for 162 yards, but was sacked four times. The Trojans totaled just 181 yards. - AP College Football

After having to postpone its game against Army and canceling team practices last week after some athletes tested positive for the coronavirus, BYU is back to a regularly-scheduled game week as the Cougars welcome Troy to LaVell Edwards Stadium for their home opener. While some quarantined players have already been cleared to return to team practices, others may not be expected until game day. Some may have to continue quarantining. The players affected, whether by testing positive or due to contact tracing, were never revealed, but there's one player that wasn't involved: Zach Wilson.

The starting quarterback admitted to testing positive over the summer and is currently on the 90-day "exempt" list - although he is still being tested regularly. His exemption is set to end next week, when the Cougars host Louisiana Tech. BYU's starting quarterback believes he and other teammates contracted the virus during a neighborhood "gambling night" with "a bunch of the football guys." Luckily for Wilson, the symptoms weren't severe, nor did they last long. "Honestly, for me and the other guys that had it, it was just like a cold - you know, minor symptoms and just tired, fatigued, all that kind of stuff," Wilson said. "For us, it was nothing crazy. It was four days and we were able to go again." - Salt Lake Tribune

Tyler Allgeier ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and BYU put the clamps on Navy's usually potent triple option in a season-opening 55-3 rout Monday night inside an eerily empty stadium at the Naval Academy. The Cougars scored touchdowns on each of their first two possessions, led 31-0 at halftime and coasted to their most lopsided victory since a 70-6 blowout of Wagner in October 2015. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event had none of the pageantry and atmosphere usually associated with a football game at Navy. There were no lavish tailgates in the parking lot, no flyover before the opening kickoff, the Brigade of Midshipmen was not allowed in the stadium and the 34,000 seats remained vacant due to restrictions ordered by the state of Maryland.

It took some doing to make this game happen. The Midshipmen were originally scheduled to open against Notre Dame and the Cougars were supposed to play Utah, but both those games got scrapped. So the athletic directors of Navy and BYU arranged this matchup, which marked the first time since 1989 these schools played each other. With no one in the stands and no cheerleaders on the sideline, all the noise was made by the players - especially those in front of the Cougars bench. The offense yelled when the defense repeatedly stuffed Navy's bid to move the ball, and the defense roared as Allgeier, Lopini Katoa and quarterback Zach Wilson moved downfield at will. Allgeier averaged 9.4 yards per carry, Katoa ran for 80 yards and scored twice, and Wilson went 13 for 18 for 232 yards with two touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter. - BYU/AP College Football

PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Cougar offense spread the ball around to 19 different receivers in 2019, including quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Baylor Romney catching passes. BYU has had no less than seven different receivers in every game this season, and at least eight in 11 of 13 contests. Thirteen of the 19 players return in 2020. BYU passed for 200+ yards in every game in 2019. Including the final two games of 2018, the Cougars have gone for 200+ in 15 straight games. The last time BYU had 200+ in more consecutive games was a string of 19, spanning the 2007-08 seasons. 2008 was the last year BYU threw for at least 200 in every game. Wilson started nine games in 2019. He led the team with 2,382 passing yards and has 3,960 passing yards and 388 rushing yards in his career. - BYU Football

Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes is hoping the Cougars can do a better job of finishing drives with touchdowns, and Wilson will be the key. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder took over as the starter midway through his freshman season and has amassed 3,960 career passing yards. "I think the quarterback is a very good player. He's very athletic and can create some problems when he scrambles or moves around the pocket," Navy defensive coordinator Brian Newberry said. "He can make just about any throw on the field and spread the ball around. "Last season, they say he was about 80% from a health standpoint, so it's scary to think about what he's going to be at 100%."

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said Wilson has some of the same characteristics as Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in terms of throwing the ball from different angles and release points. Wilson only played in nine games last season due to a nagging shoulder injury and completed 62% of his passes for 2,382 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions. Wilson will be without his top three receivers from last season, as wideouts Micah Simon and Talon Shumway both graduated, while tight end Matt Bushman recently suffered a season-ending injury. Those three accounted for 1,865 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2019. Junior Gunnar Romney is the top returning receiver, having hauled in 31 passes for 377 yards a year ago. Junior Dax Milne will be asked to step up at the wide receiver spot after totaling 285 yards on 21 catches. - Capital Times
