  12/02/20 - *Zach WilsonJr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-2, 214 (DS#2 QB) + More +

The Davey O'Brien Foundation has named BYU junior quarterback Zach Wilson to the Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2020, which recognizes the official candidates for the 2020 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. The Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2020, which includes 35 quarterbacks, will be narrowed down to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Dec. 7. A 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior from Draper, Utah, Wilson has led BYU to a No. 8 national ranking and the program's first 9-0 start since 2001. The talented signal caller's consistent and top-rated play in 2020 has garnered Heisman Trophy considerations in addition to being a candidate for the nation's top quarterback.

Triggering BYU's potent offense, Wilson ranks No. 1 nationally in points responsible for (208), No. 3 in passing touchdowns (26), No. 3 in passing efficiency (205.3), No. 3 in passing yards per attempt (11.49), No. 3 in completion percentage (.743), No. 6 in passing yards per completion (15.48), No. 7 in passing yards (2,724), No. 7 in points responsible for per game (23.1), No. 11 in passing yards per game (302.7) and No. 11 in total offense (323.9). - Daily Herald

  11/27/20 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Shawn Seaman has seen Kedon Slovis throw countless passes since taking him on as a budding sixth-grade quarterback. But when they started throwing sessions last spring, Seaman preferred to go slow with his star pupil's arm. Just three months earlier, Slovis had suffered an elbow injury from overtaxing that right arm; it was no exaggeration to suggest USC's season rested on its recovery. As they gathered at a park near the quarterback's home in Arizona, Slovis kept pushing it. His arm, he told Seaman, had never felt better. The coach could see for himself. Physically, Slovis had never looked bigger. There was an extra zip on his passes. "The ball was just popping out of his hand," Seaman said. So much so that the primary target of Slovis' passes - his father, Max - wore through a pair of receiver gloves.

Through three games of his sophomore season at USC, that extra pop hasn't always been palpable. Some passes have wobbled. Others have been off-target or thrown into danger, leading some to wonder if something isn't quite right with his arm. But Seaman, who works as an electrical engineer by day, is incredulous of any such suggestion. Slovis' elbow, Seaman says, is fine. So are his mechanics. And his confidence. And any other aspect of his game offered up as reasoning for a less-than-sharp start. Southern California linebacker Kana'i Mauga (26) reacts after making a tackle during the first half. "What I've seen looked pretty normal," Seaman said. "I didn't see anything that would make me concerned at all. I just think people have latched onto something, and it's much ado about nothing." It appears that way on paper. Slovis has completed 70.7% of his passes through three games, one percentage point behind his rate from last season but still good enough for sixth-best in the nation. Only seven quarterbacks are throwing for more yards per game than Slovis' 323.3. - Los Angeles Times

The great Southern California teams were known for their confidence. On the road against Utah, these Trojans took another step toward restoring the program's past glory. "We played with a swagger tonight, especially on defense," coach Clay Helton said. Kedon Slovis threw for two touchdowns and No. 20 USC smothered Utah in a 33-17 victory Saturday. Slovis completed 24 of 35 passes for 264 yards for USC (3-0, 3-0 Pac-12), but the Trojans' defense took centerstage, forcing five turnovers to stay undefeated and move into pole position for the Pac-12 South title.

"All week, our guys talked about playing like this was a bar fight. We played with a lot of viciousness and everyone was zeroed in," linebacker Kana'I Mauga said. USC's game plan from the outset was to stop Utah's ground game. "At all costs, stop the run," Helton said. "Once we did that, our pass rush forced throws that were interceptions, got sacks and fumbles. We were in the backfield all night." Utah (0-1, 0-1) was the final major conference team to make its 2020 debut after coronavirus cases scuttled its first two scheduled games of an already-delayed season. - Southern California/AP College Football

  11/21/20 - *Tyler AllgeierrSo/2022, Brigham Young, 5-11, 221 (DS#11 RB) + More +

Tyler Allgeier ran for a career-high 141 yards and two touchdowns and No. 8 BYU routed overmatched North Alabama 66-14 on Saturday to improve to 9-0. Allgeier had his fourth 100-yard game of the season. Zach Wilson threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns before halftime and added 33 yards rushing. He had a season-high 256.3 QB rating. BYU scored touchdowns on all six first-half drives. The Cougars rolled up 394 total yards and averaged 11.3 yards per play before halftime.

Rett Files threw for 198 yards and a touchdown for the Lions (0-4). Files played during the second and fourth quarters while starting quarterback Blake Dever took snaps in the first and third quarters. Dever threw for 107 yards. Wilson hit Gunner Romney with a 50-yard pass in double coverage on the Cougars' first play from scrimmage to set up a 2-yard scoring toss to Isaac Rex that put BYU up 7-0. Allgeier scored on 2-yard runs on each of BYU's next two drives. His longest run of the day, a 39-yard sprint down the sideline, set up a 19-yard pass from Wilson to Neil Pau'u on the next play that gave the Cougars a four-touchdown lead. - BYU/AP College Football

  11/14/20 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Vavae Malepeai bulled his way through multiple tacklers for an 8-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left, and No. 20 Southern California beat Arizona 34-30 on Saturday with another late rally. USC (2-0, 2-0 Pac-12) was outplayed by Arizona State last week before scoring two touchdowns in the final three minutes to win 28-27. The Trojans again had two late scoring drives to win a game they were outplayed in for most of the afternoon.

Kevon Slovis hit Erik Krommenhoek on a 6-yard touchdown, but Arizona (0-1, 0-1) marched quickly down the field for a 6-yard touchdown pass from Grant Gunnell from Stanley Berryhill III with 1:20 left. Slovis, off target early, completed four straight passes for 68 yards and Malepeai capped the 75-yard drive by carrying several Arizona defenders with him into the end zone. Slovis threw for 325 yards and a touchdown on 30-of-43 passing. Gunnell threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns for Arizona, which played its first game in nearly a year after last week's opener against Utah was canceled due to the coronavirus. - AP College Football

Once BYU junior quarterback Zach Wilson got clicking, the Cougars were almost unstoppable. "They came out with a good scheme and made some plays," Wilson said. "We had to adjust. That was the biggest thing. It was a lack of capitalizing. I really don't think it was anything we did but we adjusted to what they were doing. We decided to stretch the field a little more and I think that was really when it changed. We really put it in the receivers hands to go win down the field and they did a great job." BYU scored touchdowns on six of seven possessions, with the only exception being when time ran out at the end of the first half.

Wilson twice hit freshman tight end Isaac Rex (five and 20 yards) on TD passes and scored once on a four-yard run, while junior wide receiver Neil Pau'u (one yard), junior running back Lopini Katoa (20 yards) and Allgeier (two yards) also carried the ball into the end zone. The Cougars wracked up 573 yards of total offense (214 rushing, 359 passing) while holding the Broncos to just 310 total yards (61 rushing, 249 passing). "We're a good team," Wilson said. "People still doubted us and I really don't blame them for that. It's hard to tell with how our season has been switched up but each week is another opportunity to keep proving ourselves. This was a big one for us. These guys don't like to lose at home. To come out with a win like that was huge - but it means nothing unless we keep winning." - Daily Herald

Zach Wilson threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns and Tyler Allgeier rushed for 123 yards and a pair of scores as No. 9 BYU routed No. 21 Boise State 51-17 on Friday night. BYU (8-0), which beat Boise State on the road for the first time in six tries, is off to its best start since 2001 when the Cougars started 12-0. Boise State (2-1) suffered its worst loss since a 64-19 rout by rival Idaho in 1996, the Broncos first year as an FBS program. Boise State lost the 1997 season opener to Cal State Northridge by 40 at home but that game was later forfeited to the Broncos.

Wilson, who originally committed to Boise State before signing with BYU, completed 21-of-27 passes and threw TDs of 5 and 20 yards. He also found the end zone on a 4-yard run. The game appeared like it might turn into a shootout early with both teams trading scores in the first quarter. But BYU took control after Boise State quarterback Jack Sears left with what appeared to be a concussion in the first quarter and never returned. The Broncos’ offense never returned either as BYU took control in the third quarter. - AP College Football

  11/05/20 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Kedon Slovis won't catch anybody by surprise the second time around at Southern California. And it's not just because the unassuming quarterback who took the Pac-12 by storm last year is a whole lot harder to miss now with his extra 15 pounds of muscle. "He went from a young man to a grown man in a year," USC coach Clay Helton said with a smile. Slovis is becoming more than the unheralded teenager who produced the best season by a freshman quarterback in USC's voluminous history last fall. When the No. 20 Trojans finally begin their regular season Saturday morning at the Coliseum against Arizona State, Slovis carries both the weight of his responsibilities and the heavy expectations that gather on this program's best players.

His enlarged frame makes the burden look lighter - and you'd never know it anyway from Slovis' perpetually cool demeanor. "We just want to give our guys the opportunity to make plays, and it starts with me," Slovis said. "That's really the most I can do at this point, and what I'm focused on." Slovis projects a calm belying his 18 years, but he spent the extra-long offseason lifting weights, eating well, poring over video and assuming a greater leadership role. All kinds of tangible growth has happened since his impressive debut season ended with an injury in the Trojans' loss to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl, according to the coaches most responsible for guiding his journey. - AP College Football

Slovis was an unexpected surprise, earning Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year honors after stepping in for starter J.T Daniels who was injured in the season opener. Slovis, who graduated from Scottsdale Desert Mountain, threw for 3,502 yards and 30 touchdowns with nine interceptions and was so good that Daniels decided to hit the transfer portal rather than return to Troy. - Arizona Republic

Zach Wilson threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 35 yards and another score to help No. 11 BYU rout Western Kentucky 41-10 on Saturday night. BYU (7-0) is off to its best start since 2001 when the Cougars won their first 12 games in Gary Crowton's debut season. Tyler Allgeier ran for 95 yards and a touchdown for BYU. Tyrell Pigrome threw for 106 yards and a touchdown for the Hilltoppers (2-5). Gaej Walker added 75 yards on the ground. Western Kentucky has not scored more than 14 points in each of its last four games.

BYU scored touchdowns on all five of its first-half drives. The Cougars repeatedly gashed Western Kentucky on one big play after another in the half. Dax Milne's diving one-hand catch for a 38-yard gain set up a 2-yard touchdown run from Allgeier that capped BYU's opening drive. Then, Allgeier galloped 32 yards down the sideline to set up a 23-yard pass from Wilson to Milne one play later that made it 14-3. Isaiah Kaufusi forced and recovered a fumble from Walker at the Western 39 in the waning seconds of the first quarter to set up BYU's third touchdown on a 5-yard run from Wilson. - BYU/AP College Football

Kaufusi believes that the time he spent during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine helped lay the groundwork for him to be a better player this year. "I really had to dig deep and decide who I wanted to be and how quarantine would affect me," Kaufusi said. "My mentality switched and I worked really hard. I just wanted to become better in all aspects of the game and quarantine was a huge blessing for me. I got my body feeling really good. The process was putting in work every single day. Nobody was watching and here the fruits of my labor are coming through." Kaufusi said getting in the end zone was even more special to be able to make that play in the first game of 2020 where fans were allowed to watch a game in Provo, which meant his family was there to see it. "It's a great feeling to do it in front of my family who was in attendance," Kaufusi said. "To have that pick-6 in LaVell Edwards Stadium will be a memory I will cherish forever. I am really pumped about it." - Daily Herald

Zach Wilson threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 12 BYU to a 52-14 victory over Texas State on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier added 77 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Cougars. BYU (6-0) piled up 579 total yards and 30 first downs on its way to matching the team’s best start since 2008. Fourteen different players caught a pass for the Cougars and 11 had at least one carry. Brady McBride threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for the Bobcats. Texas State (1-6) fell to 0-9 against AP Top 25 teams after being held to 267 yards. McBride completed all five of his passes on Texas State’s opening drive, culminating in a wide-open 19-yard touchdown throw to Marcell Barbee, to briefly put the Bobcats ahead 7-0. Wilson matched that efficiency on BYU’s opening drive, completing all five of his passes and tacking on a pair of quarterback runs. The second one, a 10-yard sprint, helped set up a 4-yard scoring run by Lopini Katoa that tied it at 7. Once Wilson warmed up, he and the rest of the BYU offense did not cool back down. - BYU/AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Houston HeimulirSr/2023, Brigham Young, 5-11, 261 (DS#24 FB) + More +

Because fullbacks don't often touch the ball, misconceptions about the position are easy to develop. But, Heimuli contends, that doesn't mean the position itself is easy. He likened playing fullback to a "physics game." "We're not the biggest, and we're not the fastest or the strongest necessarily, so we rely a lot on leverage," he said. "We literally play physics against these defensive guys where our whole goal is just to get low and bend over and see if we can outmaneuver people. It's a bruising position where it's a lot of hard hitting, a lot of contact - but we do have a reason for some of the things we do on the field." For that reason, the "shelf life" of fullbacks in the NFL is similar to that of running backs. The average length of a professional career for running backs is just under three years, and it is rare to see many continuing to play into their thirties. Heimuli's dream is to play professionally, but he also understands that an NFL career would likely be short and has a backup plan in place. As a human biology major, one of his long-term goals is to attend medical school and ultimately work as a pediatrician. - The Stanford Daily

Wilson accounted for 440 of BYU's 478 yards of total offense. The more I watch him play, the more he reminds me of John Beck during his senior season in 2006. That's no coincidence: As ESPN announcers keep reminding us, Wilson trained with Beck and 3DQB during the summer. Wilson even looks a lot like Beck when he throws, from the occasional odd arm angle to the flick of the wrist of his powerful arm to throw the ball on a rope. Wilson is 107 of 136 (78.7%) for 1,641 yards, 12 touchdowns and one interception. His efficiency rating of 207.68 is No. 2 in the country. ESPN ran a graphic Saturday night listing Wilson as a Heisman candidate. - Daily Herald
