Kedon Slovis threw an 8-yard touchdown to Amon-Ra St. Brown with 16 seconds left for his fifth passing TD of the game, and No. 16 Southern California rallied from an 18-point, third-quarter deficit to beat UCLA 43-38 on Saturday night. UCLA took a 38-36 lead with 52 seconds remaining on Nicholas Barr-Mira's 43-yard field goal, but USC (5-0) answered quickly. Gary Bryant returned the kickoff 63 yards to the Bruins 43, Slovis connected with Tyler Vaughns on a 35-yard reception and St. Brown caught his second TD of the game on the next play. Slovis completed 30 of 47 passes for 344 yards with two touchdowns each to St. Brown and Drake London. Vaughns caught eight passes for 110 yards and Vavae Malepeai ran for 110 yards in the 90th Crosstown Showdown. The Trojans clinched the Pac-12 South title earlier in the day when Utah beat Colorado. - USC/AP College Football

  12/12/20 - *Zach WilsonJr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-2, 214 (DS#2 QB) + More +

BYU did not let an opponent with a tough defense get the upper hand again. Zach Wilson threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns to lead the no. 14 Cougars to a 28-14 victory over San Diego State on Saturday. Lopini Katoa added 130 all-purpose yards in place of usual starting running back Tyler Allgeier, who was sidelined with an undisclosed illness. BYU (10-1, no. 18 CFP) shut out the Aztecs over the final three quarters.

Jordon Brookshire threw for 230 yards and a touchdown to lead San Diego State. Kaegun Williams added 92 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Aztecs (4-4, 4-2 Mountain West) gave up 21 unanswered points after taking a first-quarter lead. Still, the Cougars did not create sufficient breathing room until a 20-yard diving catch by Isaac Rex gave them a 28-14 lead with 10:53 remaining. Rex's touchdown came after Brookshire got stopped on a 4th down run at the BYU 28 a few plays earlier. - BYU/AP College Football

  12/12/20 - Matt BushmanrSr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-5, 245 (DS#14 TE) + More +

There are several players on the roster that will have NFL opportunities in 2021, including tight end Matt Bushman, nose tackle Khyiris Tonga and junior quarterback Zach Wilson, who has been discussed as a first or second round NFL draft choice by the national media. Bushman, who suffered a season-ending injury in fall camp, would have the option to return for another senior season. He recently joined the 2021 EXOS NFL Combine program, which would indicate that he might be ready to move on. - Daily Herald

With different NFL mock drafts projecting Zach Wilson to be picked in the first round, is the BYU quarterback leaving Provo soon? Could Saturday's season finale against San Diego State be the last time Wilson takes the field at LaVell Edwards Stadium? Maybe. But Wilson won't be making that decision until the season is over. "I think when the time comes, after the season is over, I'll have a pretty good idea of what to do," he said. "The plan for me now is to finish up this week, get to a good bowl game, compete, win the bowl game and then it really goes from there. Right now, my plan is to come back next year. I really haven't thought about it because all my focus is with these boys. I really think when the time comes, I'll know what to do." - Salt Lake Tribune

Boise State defensive lineman Jackson Cravens said Tuesday that he missed two games earlier this season after testing positive for COVID-19, but he also said he's healthy and ready to play Saturday at Wyoming (4 p.m., CBSSN). He is the fourth Boise State player to have confirmed a positive test, following STUD Sam Whitney, running back Andrew Van Buren and quarterback Hank Bachmeier. Cravens said he didn't have any symptoms, but he missed the Broncos' home game against Colorado State and road game at Hawaii after testing positive for the virus. The transfer from Utah was set to make his return Nov. 28 at home against San Jose State, but that game was canceled less than 5 hours before kickoff. Cravens' return was delayed again last week when the Broncos' game at UNLV was called off on the advice of medical personnel, according to the Mountain West. - Idaho Statesman

  12/11/20 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Kedon Slovis was eager to get back on the football field after USC's victory over Utah three weekends ago. The Trojans had won, but Slovis wasn't fully satisfied with his performance. "Not my worst game in the world, but I felt like we left a lot out on the table as an offense," the sophomore quarterback said. "So I was really looking forward to that Colorado game." The Colorado game, however, was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak among USC's offensive line. So Slovis' return was delayed a week. But in the end, it didn't matter. Slovis put together his best performance of the season on Sunday night against Washington State.

He completed a season-high 78.1% of his passes for 287 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. "I think that carried over to this week," Slovis said after No. 16 USC's 38-13 win. "With our situation up front, we knew we were going to throw the ball and we knew the looks that we were going to get that we were going to throw the ball as well, so those opportunities kind of presented themselves." The performance was a good reminder of what USC's offense is capable of when its star quarterback is playing up to expectations. - Orange County Register

Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson has resigned to take over at Utah State. Arkansas State announced Anderson’s departure to take a head coaching position at another FBS school. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Anderson was being hired by Utah State. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Utah State was finalizing an agreement with Anderson and there was no official announcement. In seven years with Arkansas State, Anderson won 51 games and won consecutive Sun Belt titles in 2015 and '16. Utah State fired coach Gary Andersen after an 0-3 start to this season. Andersen was in his second year of his second stint at the Mountain West school based in Logan, Utah. - AP College Football

  12/09/20 - *Zach WilsonJr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-2, 214 (DS#2 QB) + More +

The Chanticleers' spread-option attack teased and frustrated the Cougars, unable as they were to interrupt long, sustained drives, allowing CC to hold possession of the ball for a majority of minutes, as Wilson stood on the sideline over brutal stretches, left to simply watch, unable to do anything about it. All told, Coastal held the edge in time of possession 37:51 to a mere 22:09 for BYU. As a result, Wilson and the Cougar attack lurched in their repeated failed attempts to find rhythm, to get into the groove that had been so easy and wide for them in the past, the groove that punished so many less-talented teams that had come before. At times, it was apparent that BYU tried to pass when it should run, and ran when it should pass.

Wilson did not look like the kid who had garnered so much praise for his poise and polish over the first nine games. Not only had he been pronounced as one of the college game's best passers, he had risen on NFL mock drafts to as high as the No. 2 overall selection, behind only Clemson's Trevor Lawrence. Those are only guesses, but they indicate how highly thought of Wilson had become. On Saturday, he completed 19 of 30 throws for 240 yards, one touchdown and one pick. He got little help from receivers who too often dropped balls and struggled to get open. And that slab of humanity in front of him, the one that had kept him clean and comfortable all season long, could not keep the pressure off him in this game. - Salt Lake Tribune

Losing is always painful for a competitor. When a team has enjoyed a season of successes, a defeat hurts even more. That was pretty evident when BYU senior Isaiah Kaufusi got emotional when talking to reporters on a teleconference after the disappointing 22-17 loss at Coastal Carolina on Saturday evening. "It's always tough to lose, especially in that fashion where we had a chance to win and then we came up short," Kaufusi said. "There are a lot different emotions and feelings, which are all really good. It's good for guys to feel these. It's just part of the game." He got choked up as he added, "I love my team, man. I love these guys, love what we stand for, who we stand for. The pandemic has taught us to not take things for granted. It's a blessing to be out there with my guys and my brothers. They've changed my life."

While the defeat definitely stung, it also showed plenty of ways the Cougars need to improve. BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said that while there were definitely things that the Cougars did well, he believed a lot of that was because of what Coastal Carolina was doing. "Maybe we didn't play as well as we could have but I think you have to look at whether it was what they did or whether it was our mental errors," Sitake said. "That's something we are going to have to look at and communicate with our guys, then try to improve on. I just want to make sure I don't take anything away from what Coastal Carolina has done." - Daily Herald

The fear for the Chants would be not being able to hold up physically on defense for the game's duration against a big and strong BYU offensive line. Every BYU offensive lineman is at least 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds and has been in the program a minimum of three years. The Heisman Trophy candidate has completed 176 of 237 passes for 2,724 yards and 26 touchdowns with two interceptions to average 302.7 passing yards and 323.9 total yards of offense per game. - Myrtle Beach Online
