Cougar quarterback Zach Kapono Wilson has been selected as a co-recipient of the 2020 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award, which was announced Tuesday. Wilson shares the award with USC safety Talanoa Hufanga. Since 2014, the award is presented annually to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity. Wilson is of Hawaiian ancestry and Hufanga of Samoan ancestry. Wilson helped lead the Cougars to a 11-1 record and threw for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns in the 2020 season. The junior completed 73.4% of his passes - good for a new BYU record, previously held by Steve Young. The Draper native, who finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting, also rushed for 255 yards and 10 touchdowns. - Salt Lake Tribune

Getting right to the point, with Zach Wilson gone, who will become BYU's next quarterback? The moment Wilson opted to not come back to Provo for his senior season, the QB race got started. Luckily for BYU, there are plenty of horses in the race. The list of candidates consists of Baylor Romney, Jaren Hall, Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters, Jacob Conover, Rhett Reilly and Mason Fakahua. Assistant coach Aaron Roderick, who recently went from being the Cougars quarterback coach to offensive coordinator, said the upcoming battle and decision for the starting quarterback position will be tough, but most likely will start with who the staff has seen play in a game. More than half of those kicks came from at least 40 yards out, including three from over 50. That gives him more 50-yard field goals in a perfect season than any FBS kicker since at least 2004. Zach Wilson has landed on another list of finalists for a post-season award. This time, Wilson is one of five players up for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award, as announced by the organization Wednesday. For those unfamiliar, Wilson is of Polynesian decent through his father's side of the family. Former Highland Ram Tristen Hoge will not be returning to BYU next season. He will be going pro. The senior left guard announced on Instagram that he is preparing for the 2021 NFL draft. It's been a long time coming, but the time has finally arrived - Khyiris Tonga declared for the NFL draft. The defensive tackle is the latest Cougar to make the move to the next level, as he announced Thursday afternoon via social media. Offensive lineman Brady Christensen and wide receiver Dax Milne both opted out of coming back for their senior season for a chance at the NFL draft. As a 6-foot-4, 321-pound nose tackle, Tonga set the tone for the defensive line that held just about every opponent below their scoring average. During the 2020 season, Tonga recorded a total of 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, three quarterback hurries and five pass breakups. - Salt Lake Tribune

A successful season has brought attention to the talents of BYU football players. It shouldn't be surprising that Cougars are looking to cash in on that and make the jump to the next level. BYU junior wide receiver Dax Milne, a former walk-on, became the next Cougar to declare for the NFL draft when he made the announcement on his @DaxMilne Twitter account Thursday morning.

Milne was named one of three finalists for the 2020 Burlsworth Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding football player who began his collegiate career as a walk-on. Milne is currently No. 4 in the nation in receiving with 1,188 yards. He finished with 70 receptions, an average of 17 yards per reception and eight touchdowns. In his career he tallied 101 catches for 1,542 yards with 11 touchdowns, while adding 92 yards in kickoff and punt returns. - Daily Herald

"After much thought prayer and consideration, I'm excited to announce that I will be declaring for the 2021 NFL draft," Wilson tweeted. "I pray that I will always back Cougar Nation proud." Wilson passed for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns with three interceptions this season as a junior to help the Cougars finish 11-1. Zach Wilson threw for 425 yards with three touchdown passes and two rushing scores as No. 13 BYU routed UCF 49-23 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday night. Wilson, considered a top NFL prospect, completed 26 of 34 in what likely was his final college game. The Cougars (11-1) led 35-10 at halftime and finished with 655 yards of offense to UCF's 411. Tyler Allgeier carried 19 times for 173 yards and a score. Isaac Rex had five catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns as BYU earned its first victory in nine games it has played in the Sunshine State. Dillon Gabriel was 21 of 45 for 217 yards and two TDs for the Knights (6-4). He had a stretch of nine straight incompletions bridging the second and third quarters.
