  09/05/21 - Jaren HallrJr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 207 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Zach Wilson watched his alma mater begin a new chapter without him. His successor got off to a good start. Quarterback Jaren Hall accumulated 243 yards and two touchdowns as BYU defeated Arizona 24-16 at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Hall, the redshirt sophomore from Spanish Fork, Utah, made his third career start and first in the post-Wilson era. Wilson, drafted No. 2 overall by the New York Jets in this year's NFL Draft, was in Las Vegas to see the Cougars play in an NFL stadium. "Zach being here, supporting the guys he played with for three years, means a lot to us to have him and brings confidence to everybody for what he's done in the past," Hall said. "It was good to have him." Hall started the game 1-of-5 passing for 10 yards, but finished 18 of 28 for 198 yards and two touchdown passes for the Cougars, who have won 12 of their last 13 games.

After a scoreless first quarter, BYU's signal caller lit a spark. Hall caught a 9-yard pass from receiver Neil Pau'u to put the Cougars into the red zone. Tyler Allgeier ran into the end zone from 15 yards out on the next play to give BYU a 6-0 lead with 9:17 left in the second quarter. "I think it was just a clean football game overall for the offense," Hall said. "I thought we executed well. Just kind of took the plays in front of us when they came, the opportunities the defense gave us." That drive sparked BYU's offense in the second quarter. On the Cougars' next drive following a missed 31-yard field goal from Arizona, Hall found Pau'u in single coverage down the middle for a 67-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion made it 14-0 with 2:06 left in the first half. Pau'u caught eight passes for 126 yards and both of Hall's touchdown passes. The second came three plays after Hall spun in the pocket, found a lane and ran 39 yards down the left sideline to the Arizona 17-yard line. - BYU/AP College Football

  09/02/21 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

Gerry Bohanon has been hitting up his teammates in recent days for extra tickets to Baylor's season opener against Texas State. After sitting behind Charlie Brewer for three seasons, Saturday night's game in San Marcos will be Bohanon's first as the Bears' starting quarterback. It's a big moment for Bohanon, and he wants as many family members and friends as possible to be there to share it. "My family's pretty excited about it, so I'm pretty much trying to get a couple of tickets to get some more family members to the game," Bohanon said. "Get to see some good action this weekend that everybody's been waiting for." In an era when dissatisfied players routinely enter the transfer portal, Bohanon is an example of how old-school patience can still pay off. Coming out of tiny Earle, Ark., Bohanon put up phenomenal high school numbers as he passed for 11,362 yards and 142 touchdowns and rushed for 5,925 yards and 70 scores in four years and twice earned all-state honors. - Waco Tribune Herald

The 2021 Stanford Football captains were announced by Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw on Thursday evening inside Luck Auditorium. The Cardinal captains are annually voted upon by the student-athletes on the roster. Representing Stanford as captains this season will be: returning captain Thomas Booker, alongside newly appointed captains Jordan Fox, Houston Heimuli and Michael Wilson. Heimuli is a fifth-year from Woods Cross, Utah who is studying human biology. A dynamic fullback, Heimuli was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2020. He was integral in the improved Cardinal running game, as Stanford tallied 15 rushing touchdowns in just six games. - Stanford Football

  08/27/21 - Jaren HallrJr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 207 (DS#11 QB) + More +

BYU has its man. Jaren Hall has won the Cougars' starting quarterback job, beating out Baylor Romney for the title of QB1. Hall appeared in five games for BYU - and started in two - in 2019, completing 31 of 46 passes for 420 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 139 yards and three scores that year. "It feels good," Hall said. "Our work really begins, time to focus in on Arizona. For today, enjoy it with my wife and my family. It's fun, but we've got to go win [next] Saturday." If it felt as though the Cougars' quarterback battle was drawn out, that's because it was. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said he had never gone this far into fall camp splitting up reps equally due to a quarterback position battle.

The decision started taking shape a week ago, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said, but the staff used that time as an opportunity for the Romney and Jacob Conover to "change [the coaches'] minds." They did well, but it wasn't enough to beat out Hall for the starting gig. "Those guys are great young men with great character, so they were classy," Sitake said. "... When handling these tough situations, I thought they handled it like mature adults. They're team guys - they're guys who are about the team first. So, they understand and they know their role now; We're relying on them to be their best self for our team to be as good as it possibly can." - Salt Lake Tribune

  08/25/21 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

Baylor announced junior Gerry Bohanon as the starting quarterback on Sunday. Bohanon has been battling sophomore Jacob Zeno and redshirt freshman Blake Shapen for the starting job throughout the spring and the first two weeks of preseason camp. Baylor announced coach Dave Aranda's decision through social media. A fourth-year junior, the 6-3, 221-pound Bohanon has hit 18 of 38 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 296 yards on 48 carries and three scores in his college career. Both Bohanon and Zeno backed up Charlie Brewer the last two seasons before the veteran quarterback transferred to Utah for his final season of college eligibility. - Waco Tribune Herald

  08/18/21 - Neil PauuSr/2022, Brigham Young, 6-4, 205 (DS#73 WR) + More +

BYU junior receiver Neil Pau'u sat in front of junior defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea during Monday's news conference in Provo. So when Fauatea was asked who he's seen improve the most during fall camp, he smiled and called out Pau'u's name. But Fauatea's praise wasn't just because of proximity. "Every time they throw the ball, I see No. 2 catch it," Fauatea said, referring to Pau'u's jersey number. "Somehow, he's always open. Even difficult passes or difficult catches, I've seen Neil Pau'u." Case in point: Shortly after media was allowed onto the Student Athletic Building's second floor balcony to observe the end of the Cougars' first fall camp practice, Pau'u quickly quieted reporters by making an impressive touchdown catch from Jaren Hall, who's in the middle of his own position battle.

Pau'u has been sharp throughout the first week of camp, eager to win that starting position. Dax Milne traded the blue and white BYU uniform for one that features more burgundy and gold after getting drafted to the NFL by the Washington Football Team. That means the Cougars enter the 2021 season without the nearly 1,200 receiving yards of production Milne provided. They won't have his ability to serve as an occasional ball carrier, where he gained 67 yards on 11 carries last year. But BYU's receivers might be the deepest and most experienced position group on the team. "That room is really deep right now," quarterback Baylor Romney said Monday. A big reason for that depth is Pau'u. The California native is entering his fifth season with the Cougars, and has increased his production every year since his freshman season in 2017. - Salt Lake Tribune

  08/08/21 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

As a sophomore, the USC starting quarterback saw some regression from his breakout freshman campaign. There were simple throws he failed to complete and his lack of rhythm allowed the Trojans to fall behind early in games. Slovis was able to lead several fourth-quarter comebacks to minimize the damage, but it was clear he wasn't himself. But at Pac-12 media day, Slovis was honest about what led to the down year: A lack of confidence in his throwing elbow after he injured it in the 2019 Holiday Bowl. Slovis says he's shaken those doubts off and wants to come back and be the best version of himself as a quarterback. There will be challenges, like new faces in the receiving corps and the departure of a first-round left tackle. But if Slovis is confident and not holding anything back, USC will be in better shape than it was a year ago. - Orange County Register

  08/05/21 - *Tyler AllgeierrSo/2022, Brigham Young, 5-11, 221 (DS#11 RB) + More +

Last season, Allgeier rushed for 1,130 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was the first single-season 1,000-yard rushing performance by a Cougar since Jamaal Williams last did so in 2016. Allgeier's breakout rushing performance came a year after the Fontana, Calif., native had split roles as linebacker, running back and kick returner. Now, fully focused on the running back position, and after last season's performance, Allgeier is looking to run away with the role of RB1. However, Allgeier - who has already made two preseason watchlists - won't have to do everything alone. Running backs coach Harvey Unga said he plans to use a full supporting cast on the run game.

He's just not sure how many players, exactly, he'll use. "Whoever's healthy; It's hard to say," Unga said. "You know last year, when we started out the season, we had a guy like Lopini Katoa who could do everything and was your veteran back. And then a new up and coming kid like Tyler Allgeir, who showcased that he belonged there, too. It was hard to figure all that out, but as the season went on, guys kind of showcased different abilities, different strengths, different weaknesses and from there coach Grimes and ARod did a good job of figuring out who fit where and when we were going to use them. I guess it's a collective decision." - Salt Lake Tribune

  08/02/21 - Caleb EtiennerSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-7, 329 (DS#22 OT) + More +

A monster of a man at 6-foot-7 and 350 pounds, Etienne has the body of a star in the making. But the junior-college transfer needs to translate it to the field. He arrived over the summer and held his own in strength coach Rob Glass' workouts. The Cowboys need him to be a rock at left tackle, where he has a chance to start from day one. Sometimes, junior-college transfers need extra time to adjust to the Division I game, but neither the Cowboys nor Etienne can afford that. - Daily Oklahoman

  07/30/21 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

To most observers, Kedon Slovis didn't appear to be himself last season. The sophomore quarterback was good enough to lead the Trojans to a 5-1 record and a Pac-12 South Division title while logging several stunning comeback wins. But after a freshman season in which the former three-star recruit established himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in the country, there was something missing in 2020. The football was wobbling out of his hand, and his was missing receivers on routine routes. "I never had an issue with accuracy my whole life, or throwing velocity," Slovis said Tuesday at Pac-12 Media Day, "and all of a sudden last year I'm looking at it like, 'What's going on with my arm?'" During the offseason, Slovis went back to video to evaluate what had happened to his arm. But the answer actually stems from his final play of the 2019 season.

Slovis' last act as a freshman was to leave the Holiday Bowl loss to Iowa early following an elbow injury. He avoided anything that required surgery or an extended off period and was ready to participate in the following spring practice before it was shut down by the pandemic. But despite being cleared by the medical staff, Slovis still didn't totally trust his arm by the time the 2020 season arrived. "I never got that confidence back of wanting to use that or was really conservative about using it," Slovis explained. "At times I was compensating for not wanting to use it or put strain or stress on the elbow. So I think that caused a lot of the issues that you guys saw." - Orange County Register

  07/30/21 - Jake OldroydrSr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 190 (DS#33 K) + More +

Headlined by a previous winner and three former finalists, including BYU's Jake Oldroyd, the 2021 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Watch List boasts a highly competitive field of 30 outstanding kickers. Announced Wednesday by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, the 2021 preseason candidates for the nation's top place-kicker includes an unprecedented 20 former semifinalists.

A Lou Groza Award finalist in 2020, Oldroyd was named to four All-America teams as a sophomore last year in addition to being among the final three players up for the Groza Award. He was named second-team All-America by Walter Camp and The Athletic, while being a third-team honoree by The Associated Press and Phil Steele. Oldroyd is the first BYU All-American kicker since Matt Payne in 2004. A native of Southlake, Texas, Oldroyd finished the 2020 season a perfect 13-for-13 on field goals to set a new BYU single-season field goal percentage record. - Daily Herald

The Butkus Award honoring the nation's best linebackers kicked off its 37th annual selection process today by announcing its collegiate and high school preseason watch lists, recognizing BYU's Payton Wilgar on its list of top college linebackers. Each watch list contains 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary "51" pro jersey associated with the Award's namesake Dick Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The Collegiate Butkus Award watch list includes candidates from 51 universities, including returning five returning semifinalists. Wilgar, a 6-3, 245-pound Covid-year sophomore in 2021, is a key, versatile defender against the run and pass for BYU. In 2020, he helped the Cougars finish ranked No. 11 in the nation with an 11-1 record, making 57 tackles with five tackles for loss while adding a team-best five QB hurries with four pass breakups and forced a fumble. - Daily Herald

  07/26/21 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

As USC's star quarterback, Kedon Slovis is in a position to capitalize on the new landscape of name, image, and likeness, so he's seeking help on NIL from an agency well acquainted with marketing the biggest star athletes in Los Angeles. Slovis has signed a deal with Klutch Sports to represent him on all NIL matters, a person familiar with the deal but not authorized to speak on the matter told The Los Angeles Times. Slovis appears to be the first college football star to sign with the agency, which is most known for representing LeBron James, Anthony Davis and other major NBA stars.

The deal only became possible three weeks earlier on July 1, when the floodgates finally opened on NIL. A handful of other top college quarterbacks have also since signed with agencies to handle using their names and personal brands to make money. Former Santa Ana Mater Dei and current Alabama starting quarterback Bryce Young signed with CAA and, according to Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban, is already nearing seven figures in revenue off NIL deals. As his third and likely final season at USC approaches, Slovis could see a similar windfall. The Heisman Trophy contender has yet to announce any sponsorships or NIL deals, nor has he posted any advertisements on his social media channels. But a deal with Klutch Sports certainly suggests Slovis plans to at least explore his capacity to profit off his potential stardom. - Los Angeles Times

  07/20/21 - *Tyler AllgeierrSo/2022, Brigham Young, 5-11, 221 (DS#11 RB) + More +

The Maxwell Football Club today announced its watch list for the 85th Maxwell Award presented annually to the outstanding player in college football, naming BYU running back Tyler Allgeier to its list of the nation's top players in 2021. Allgeier is one of 80 players recognized on the annual Maxwell Award watch list, which incorporates a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast. The list features six returning semifinalists from 2020, including Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati), Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina), Breece Hall (Iowa State), D'Eriq King (Miami), Sam Howell (North Carolina), and Dillon Gabriel (UCF).

Allgeier, a sophomore in eligibility after last year's Covid season, burst onto the national scene in 2020 in his first year as a starter at running back for BYU, rushing for 1,130 yards to rank No. 8 in the nation and No. 1 among players with 150 attempts or less. One of 14 sophomores named to the watch list, Allgeier received 2020 Phil Steele All-America honorable mention after helping BYU go 11-1 and finish ranked No. 11 last season. The 5-11, 220-pound back ranked No. 3 nationally for the most runs of 30 or more yards while averaging 7.53 yards per carry, which was No. 7 in the country and tops among all sophomores. - Daily Herald

  07/12/21 - Tyler BattyrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-6, 271 (DS#25 DE) + More +

It didn't take long. Within the first week of the new name, image and likeness (NIL) era, a dozen BYU student-athletes have signed endorsement or sponsorship deals, according to BYU athletic department officials. However, not all deals are public knowledge - at least not through BYU. It is up to each company and student-athlete to disclose their agreement. Because of that, although they weren't the first, two BYU football players were the first to share their endorsement deals on social media last week. Tyler Batty and Austin Riggs signed endorsement deals with Blamshot, a family-owned company that sells lip balms in 20-gauge shotgun shells, on Wednesday. - Salt Lake Tribune
