Brigham Young isn't used to having to rally from behind, yet the 13th-ranked Cougars were able to come back after blowing a 15-point lead in the second half against Southern California on Saturday night. Jackson McChesney's 7-yard TD run with 3:57 remaining and a red zone stop during the final minute propelled the Cougars to a 35-31 win over the Trojans. BYU (10-2) had a 15-point lead in the third quarter, but USC scored 18 consecutive points to take the lead. "We just stuck to our basics and got the energy back. Once we were able to do that, it came together well and it was an easy march down the field," said quarterback Jalen Hall, who completed 20 of 32 passes for 276 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. BYU trailed 31-28 with 11:03 remaining after Jaxson Dart's 10-yard touchdown pass to Gary Bryant Jr. and 2-point conversion. The Cougars drove down to the USC 39-yard line on the ensuing possession, but Hall was picked off in the end zone by Calen Bullock.

BYU forced USC to go three-and-out, and got the ball back at its 38 before going 62 yards in six plays, culminating in McChesney's TD. USC drove to the BYU 15 in the final minute, but Bryant came up a yard short on a pass from Dart on fourth-and-6 and turned the ball over on downs with 38 seconds remaining as Kaleb Hayes made the tackle. "It was looking pretty bad, but once we regained our composure, I was confident we could come back and get the win," BYU coach Kelani Sitake said. "USC was bringing a lot of physicality to the game. We had a bunch of guys chip in. "We knew we were going to get USC's best shot. There was a lot for them and us to play for." Tyler Allgeier rushed for 111 yards and a pair of second-quarter touchdowns for the Cougars, who went unbeaten in five games against Pac-12 teams this season. - BYU/AP College Football

  11/20/21 - Jaren HallrJr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 207 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Jaren Hall had 211 of his 312 yards passing in the first half, Jakob Robinson picked off two passes in the second half and No. 14 BYU beat Georgia Southern 34-17 on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier, the nation's seventh-leading rusher, finished with 136 yards on 25 carries to help the Cougars (9-2) win their fourth straight game. Before a near capacity crowd at 25,000-seat Paulson Stadium, Georgia Southern (3-8) fell short in its attempt to beat the highest-ranked team to visit Statesboro. The Eagles had played eight previous games against ranked opponents, beating Appalachian State in 2018 and 2019.

In the first meeting between the two schools, BYU coach Kalani Sitake said Georgia Southern fans were throwing food at his team in the first half. "We were getting hit by burritos on the sideline," Sitake said. "It was pretty hostile, so I'm really proud of how the guys bounced back and made some adjustments. We talked about it at halftime. Playing our style of football, and I thought we did that in the second half." Robinson picked off Amare Jones' pass with a diving catch late in the third and intercepted Connor Cigelske, taking his first snaps as Georgia Southern's quarterback, early in the fourth. Robinson's second pick was a sensational over-the-shoulder catch at the sideline, setting up Puka Nacua's 29-yard reception in the left corner of the end zone and a 34-17 lead. "I just saw that he ran a corner route," Robinson said. "We were in cover-2. I just jumped it. It was not (easy), but somehow I caught it." Hall has passed for at least 300 yards in four of his last five games. - BYU/AP College Football

  11/13/21 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

Gerry Bohanon had a hard time finding the words to describe just how he felt after 18th-ranked Baylor ran over Oklahoma, ending the fourth-ranked Sooners' nation's-best 17-game winning streak. The hard-nosed quarterback does know what it means going forward for the resurgent Bears. "I know we'll keep going," Bohanon said. "I know that was just motivation for what we can do, and we can be as a team." Bohanon threw a touchdown pass and ran for two scores in the fourth quarter and Baylor's defense harassed both Oklahoma quarterbacks in a 27-14 win Saturday that kept the Bears in contention for a spot in the Big 12 championship game, a week after an unexpected loss at struggling TCU. "It's controlled confidence. You know, we put in the work and we expected results," said linebacker Terrel Bernard, who had nine tackles and two sacks for Baylor (8-2, 5-2 Big 12, CFP No. 13). "We didn't play up to our standard last week. And, we corrected some things on tape. We put in a great game plan and came out here and executed." The Sooners (9-1, 6-1, CFP No. 8) were held to 260 total yards, their fewest ever with coach Lincoln Riley in his five seasons as head coach and two seasons as offensive coordinator before that.

It was their fewest points in a regular-season game since a 48-14 home loss to Baylor in 2014, which came weeks before they ended that season with a 40-6 loss to Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Oklahoma lost in November under Riley for the first time. "Disappointing, no other way to put it," Riley said. "Still a whole lot left for this football team. That's the advantage of winning your first nine games, is you do set yourself up to be able to overcome something like this...We'll bounce back like we always do and like we fully expect to." - Baylor/AP College Football

  11/06/21 - Jaren HallrJr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 207 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Jaren Hall threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half, and No. 17 BYU demolished Idaho State 59-14 on Saturday. Baylor Romney took over in the second half for Hall, who finished 2 yards shy of his fourth 300-yard performance in the last five games. Puka Nacua had six catches for 120 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars, who debuted at No. 15 in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday. Keanu Hill caught four passes for a career-high 92 yards and a touchdown. Hill also blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for BYU's final score late in the fourth quarter.

BYU (8-2) finished with 560 yards of offense, averaging 7.4 yards per play, in its third straight victory. The Cougars have won 19 of 22 games over the past two seasons. "Kalani has found his groove and I'm so glad the foundation that we laid is starting to pay off," defensive lineman Uriah Leiataua said. Sagan Gronauer threw for 167 yards and a touchdown for Idaho State (1-8), who fell to 0-7 all-time against the Cougars. The Bengals gained 2 yards in the first quarter and did not complete a pass. Meanwhile, BYU's offense encountered virtually no resistance as it raced to a 42-7 halftime lead. "Once we got through that first quarter offensively, we started to move the ball a little bit," Idaho State coach Rob Phenicie said. "I think Sagan settled down finally and we saw some good stuff moving forward." Hall's highlights included a 23-yard touchdown pass to Puka Nacua midway through the second quarter and a 13-yard dart to Neil Pau'u just before halftime on which Pau'u dragged two defenders and fell across the goal line. - BYU/AP College Football

Winning with tough defense has been BYU's path to success this season. The 25th-ranked Cougars proved they still know how to light up a scoreboard. BYU outlasted Virginia 66-49 on Saturday night in a game in which the teams combined for 1,322 yards and 115 points. The Cougars got career-best performances from Tyler Allgeier and Jaren Hall to secure their fifth victory over a Power 5 opponent this season. Allgeier rushed for a career-high 266 yards and five touchdowns. Hall threw for a career-high 349 yards and three scores. He also ran for 42 yards and another TD. "Defensive coaches don't really like this game, but it felt like an old-school BYU type of game," Cougars coach Kalani Sitake said. BYU (7-2) pulled away after scoring 21 points off three turnovers.

Virginia kept pace behind a strong all-around performance from Brennan Armstrong. He threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns, and also tossed a pair of interceptions. Armstrong added 94 yards and two TDs on 11 carries. He left late in the fourth quarter after sustaining an apparent rib injury. The loss snapped the Cavaliers' (6-3, 4-2 ACC) four-game winning streak. "We didn't make enough plays to win today," Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "A couple of turnovers ended up being the difference in the game, as it ended up being score for score for score." The Cougars were mired in a shootout with Virginia until forcing back-to-back turnovers in the fourth quarter. - BYU/AP College Football

Tyler Allgeier ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns and BYU beat Washington State 21-19 on Saturday in Washington State's first game since head coach Nick Rolovich was fired for refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Rolovich and four assistants were fired Monday for not complying with the governor's mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Rolovich had requested a religious exemption that was denied Monday, the state's vaccination deadline. He was replaced for the remainder of the season by Jake Dickert, the defensive coordinator who was elevated to acting head coach. "Our guys had a lot of heart," Dickert said, praising his team's "effort and commitment." "I know it's been a tough week," Dickert, in his first college game ever as a head coach, said. "It's a little bit learning on the fly. I felt it was really smooth. For the most part we operated as a staff." Asked what it was like to be a head coach, Dickert said he had to take a breath and remember to enjoy the experience. "I'll never forget it," he said. "It was a dream come true." Washington State was were undone by several offensive holding penalties that wiped out good gains, and two failed conversion attempts after touchdowns. "That put us behind the eight-ball," Dickert said. Max Borghi scored three touchdowns for Washington State (4-4), which saw its three-game winning streak end. Jaren Hall threw for 143 yards for BYU (6-2), which fell out of the Top 25 this week after losing two straight games. - BYU/AP College Football

  10/09/21 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

Gerry Bohanon had career highs of 336 yards passing and four touchdowns, including a 75-yarder to Tyquan Thornton on the second play of the game, while also scoring on a 1-yard sneak in Baylor's 45-20 victory over West Virginia on Saturday. Thornton caught eight passes for a career-best 187 yards and two TDs as the Bears scored on four of their first five possessions a week after starting with eight consecutive punts in a 24-14 loss to Oklahoma State that knocked Baylor out of the Top 25 right after getting in. With the Bears (5-1, 3-1 Big 12) celebrating the 10th anniversary of Robert Griffin III's Heisman Trophy season by showing frequent highlights, Bohanon was 18 of 29 with no interceptions, giving the fourth-year junior 183 career attempts without a pick.

Jarret Doege was sacked six times, and the Mountaineers (2-4, 0-3) again couldn't get the Big 12's worst run game going. West Virginia, which had 90 mostly empty yards rushing, has lost its first three conference games for the second time since joining the league in 2012. Thornton caught Bohanon's first pass 7 yards from the line of scrimmage, split the defense and ran untouched on a play that was 3 yards shy of the longest of the senior's career. The Mountaineers needed just 1:38 to get even when Sean Ryan caught a 12-yard pass from Doege that was tipped by Baylor safety Christian Morgan. Doege was 24 of 37 for 272 yards with a touchdown and was replaced with the game out of reach by Garrett Greene, who had a 13-yard scoring run late. - Baylor/AP College Football

  10/02/21 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Kedon Slovis threw three touchdown passes and Southern California broke out of its doldrums Saturday with a 37-14 rout of free-falling Colorado. Slovis completed 19 of 29 throws for 276 yards and hit Drake London, Michael Trigg and Gary Bryant Jr. with scoring passes as the Trojans (3-2, 2-2 Pac-12) bounced back in a big way from their first home loss to Oregon State in 61 years by rolling over a Buffaloes team whose offense remains stuck in neutral. The Buffaloes (1-4, 0-2) fell to 0-15 against Southern Cal with their fourth consecutive loss since a win in their opener over lower-division Northern Colorado.

Brendon Lewis was held to 10-of-17 passing for 162 yards, was intercepted once and sacked five times. The Buffs converted just 1 of 10 third downs and failed on a fourth-down try. The Trojans gained just 2 yards on the game's opening possession but they made up for it by scoring on their next four drives to build a 20-0 cushion. A fumble at midfield by USC running back Keaontray Ingram gave the Buffs a big break just before halftime. Safety Mark Perry pounced on the loose ball at the Trojans 48, and that gave Colorado's sputtering offense its first foray in USC territory. Seven plays later, Deion Smith scored from a yard out to pull the Buffs to 20-7 at halftime. The Buffs got the ball coming out the break with hopes of making it a one-score game, but they turned it over on their first two drives, once on a strip sack and another time on downs, and the Trojans capitalized by expanding their lead to 30-7. And cornerback Joshua Jackson Jr.'s interception set up Bryant's 15-yard TD catch that made it 37-14 early in the fourth quarter. - Southern California/AP College Football

Tyler Allgeier ran for a career-high 208 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 13 BYU beat Utah State 34-20 on Friday night. BYU (5-0) beat Utah State (3-2) for the second straight time in the Battle for the Old Wagon Wheel rivalry series. Baylor Romney threw for 187 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-19 passing in the first half, but was injured just before halftime and sat out the second half. He made his second consecutive start with Jaren Hall sidelined because of a rib injury.

Third-string quarterback Jacob Conover led the offense after halftime. The freshman threw for 45 yards on 5-of-9 passing in his college debut. Logan Bonner threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns for the Aggies. Bonner left with eight minutes to go because of a knee injury. The Cougars scored on their first four drives and averaged 9.1 yards per play before halftime. Romney completed his first eight passes, and Allgeier nearly eclipsed 100 rushing yards before halftime. - BYU/AP College Football

Baylor Romney threw for a career-high 305 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 15 BYU to a 35-27 victory over South Florida on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier ran for 81 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help the Cougars earn their sixth straight victory dating to last season. Gunner Romney and Puka Nacua each finished with more than 100 receiving yards, combining for 221 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. BYU (4-0) turned in a dominant offensive performance, totaling 443 yards while averaging 8.9 yards per play. Timmy McClain threw for 186 yards and ran for 55 yards to lead South Florida. Jaren Mangham added 86 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Bulls (1-3) scored on three straight drives in the second half before ultimately coming up short.

Baylor Romney started at quarterback in place of Jaren Hall, who suffered a rib injury on BYU's final scoring drive against Arizona State a week earlier. With him at the controls, the Cougars ran over the Bulls from the start. On his first pass of the game, Baylor Romney hit his brother, Gunner, with a 49-yard strike that set up BYU's first touchdown. He followed with a 55-yard dart to Puka Nacua that set up another score on the Cougars' second drive. BYU raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter after scoring on each of its first three drives. Allgeier accounted for back-to-back touchdowns in that stretch, scoring twice on 1-yard fourth-down runs. - BYU/AP College Football

  09/25/21 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said his defense was just a little bit off with its detail early in Saturday's game against Baylor. The Bears took full advantage with a fast start, then held on as their special teams and defense handled the rest. Gerry Bohanon threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Baylor stopped a two-point try with 24 seconds left to beat No. 14 Iowa State 31-29 on Saturday. Breece Hall ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for Iowa State (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) and caught five passes for 51 yards, including a 16-yard score in the final minute that was followed by a failed two-point try.

On the two-point conversion, Brock Purdy went under center after spending most of the day in shotgun and bobbled the snap. That was enough to throw off the play's timing, and Purdy was forced to throw a jump ball that was intercepted by Baylor's JT Woods. "It was supposed to be a play-action, and we felt like it would work knowing that I demand so much attention," Hall said. "It was a bobbled snap, so Brock got out there late. He couldn't get around the edge defender, so he had to throw it up and hope for the best. It just didn't work out." The Bears recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock for their first win over a ranked opponent since they beat North Carolina in the 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl. "It was a team win," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. "The guys (were) gritting out stuff and not allowing stuff to happen. It's way cool to be on that side of it." - Baylor/AP College Football

Jaren Hall threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns and added 38 yards on seven carries, leading No. 23 BYU to a 27-17 victory over No. 19 Arizona State on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier added 69 yards and a touchdown on the ground as the Cougars (3-0) earned their third straight victory over a Pac-12 opponent. BYU forced four turnovers and posted its third straight victory over Arizona State. Jaylen Daniels threw for 265 yards to lead the Sun Devils (2-1), but also tossed a pair of interceptions. Danyiel Ngata ran for 82 yards and a touchdown to lead Arizona State's ground attack.

Arizona State cut a double-digit halftime deficit to 21-17 late in the third quarter with back-to-back scoring drives. Ngata covered 51 yards on four straight runs and scored on a 10-yard sweep. Then, Christian Zendejas added a 40-yard field goal on the ensuing drive. The Sun Devils appeared poised to go ahead before the third quarter ended after Merlin Robinson intercepted Hall at the ASU 25. Tyler Allgeier chased down Robinson as he ran along the sideline and punched the ball out of his hands, forcing a fumble that Hall recovered at the BYU 15. The Cougars sealed the win after backup quarterback Baylor Romney tossed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Rex with 1:19 left. Romney came into the game after Hall was injured at the end of a QB run with 2:22 remaining. - BYU/AP College Football

Gerry Bohanon threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns while running for another score, and Baylor had its way against Kansas on the ground, piling up 307 yards rushing in a 45-7 victory on Saturday. Abram Smith ran for 122 yards and a touchdown, and Trestan Ebner added 72 yards on just 12 carries, as the Bears (3-0, 1-0 Big 12) beat the Jayhawks (1-2, 0-1) for the 12th consecutive time. Baylor hasn't lost to Kansas since the 2007 season. Baylor finished with 576 yards total offense. Kansas managed just 166. Jayhawks quarterback Jason Bean was held to just 57 yards passing and a touchdown, though he did have 62 yards on the ground, before giving way to backup Jalon Daniels in the fourth quarter.   09/12/21 - Jaren HallrJr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 207 (DS#11 QB) + More +

BYU has worked to build itself into a team with a tough defense and efficient offense, following a blueprint laid down by archrival Utah. The Cougars finally found a way to beat the Utes - using that same blueprint. Jaren Hall threw three touchdown passes and totaled 241 yards of offense, helping BYU topple No. 21 Utah 23-17 on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier added 97 yards on 27 carries as the Cougars snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Utes. It was BYU's first victory over their rivals since 2009 and the team's largest margin of victory in the series since 1996.

BYU ran for 219 yards, becoming the first team to gain at least 200 rushing yards against Utah since Texas also rushed for 231 yards in the 2019 Alamo Bowl. "I would have bet my house going in that we would not lose the line of scrimmage," Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said "I never have seen that coming where we didn't control the line of scrimmage. That's our M.O., that's what we do best. But we surrendered nearly 250 yards rushing, couldn't get a sack." Micah Bernard ran for 146 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries to lead Utah. Charlie Brewer threw for 147 yards and a touchdown for the Utes, who trailed the entire game. Utah cut BYU's lead to 23-17 on a 22 yard run from Bernard with 9:31 left. The Cougars responded with a six-minute drive that ended in a 21-yard field goal from Jake Oldroyd, effectively ending the Utes' comeback hopes. "Just love the fight in our players," BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. "It was good to get this win." - BYU/AP College Football
