Zay Flowers caught a 20-yard touchdown pass, Aaron Boumerhi kicked three field goals and Boston College sent the Orange to their fifth-straight loss, 16-13 on Saturday. The Eagles held Syracuse to 240 yards total offense. Flowers had six receptions for 64 yards for the Eagles (5-3, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). David Bailey gained 125 yards on 25 carries, his first 100-yard game of the season and the fourth of his career. Travis Levy chipped in with 73 yards on the ground and he caught four passes for 33 more. Phil Jurkovec completed 20 of 29 passes for 208 yards. Boumerhi connected on field goals of 33, 34 and 22 yards. Syracuse freshman JaCobian Morgan was 19 of 30 passing for 188 yards, a 1-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hackett with 21 seconds remaining and one interception in his first career start for the Orange (1-7, 1-6). Taj Harris had seven receptions for 61 yards. Andre Szmyt hit on field goals from 35 and 46 yards for Syracuse. Syracuse, which converted just 23 percent on third down entering the game, converted on just three of 11 opportunities. - AP College Football

Max Richardson and Isaiah McDuffie fuel the defense: When McDuffie was out last season, the one person who probably missed him the most was Richardson. The two linebackers are the glue that binds the defense together. They wreak havoc and play with an aggression that Hafley wants to see. They combined for 12 tackles against Georgia Tech. Last year, Richardson finished third in the ACC with 108 tackles. This season, he's third in the conference, averaging 9.7 per game. One spot ahead of him is McDuffie at 9.8. - Boston Globe

BC linebackers Isaiah McDuffie (59) and Max Richardson (58) are third and fourth nationally in tackles this season. The tandem combined for 12 tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss in last weekend's 48-27 victory over Georgia Tech. Richardson finished the 2019 season ranked nationally with 72 solo tackles and was named second team All-ACC. McDuffie spent most of last year recovering from lower body injury and played in the final four games. - Boston Globe

Before Antonio Brown's erratic behavior made him a sideshow for social media and catnip for clickbait, his skillset and work ethic made him a case study in how the wide receiver position could be played. Brown was an undersized, sixth-round pick who turned into arguably the game's best all-around receiver. It didn't matter where he lined up, it didn't matter what defense he saw. He was a 100-catch season waiting to happen. Growing up in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Boston College receiver Zay Flowers watched him closely. Almost exclusively. When Flowers named the receivers he wanted to model himself after, the only one was Brown. "That's basically it," he said. "Nobody else." One of the benefits of the coaching staff assembled by Eagles' first-year coach Jeff Hafley is its wealth of NFL experience. Their relationships make it easy to play six degrees of separation.

Early on, Flowers mentioned to offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti how much he studied Brown. Cignetti, who had NFL runs with the Rams, Giants, and Packers, happened to mention it to former Giants quarterback Geno Smith. Smith happened to be spending the quarantine working out with Brown. Those workouts happened to be in Miami - a relatively short drive for Flowers. Before Flowers knew it, he was running routes with the receiver he'd been dissecting for years. "It's just me Gino and AB working out on a golf course," Flowers said. - Boston Globe

Jurkovec completed touchdown passes of 44, 77 and 25 yards to the speedy Flowers. The 44-yarder put BC in front 10-7 with 13:00 left in the second. The 77-yarder put BC up 24-14 on the second play of the third quarter. Flowers' previous long was a 61-yard touchdown strike against Duke in the season opener. Flowers caught a 25-yard touchdown pass in the opening series of overtime. "Zay is one of the best receivers in the country the way he can move is unlike anybody i have ever seen," said Jurkovec.   Long is third in the nation in receptions and tops among tight ends, well ahead of Duke's Noah Gray (19) and Sean Dykes (16) of Memphis. Long has established himself as the favorite to win the John Mackey Award given annually to the nation's best tight end. "I give him a lot of credit and then coach (Steve) Shimko has done a really nice job with him," said BC coach Jeff Hafley during a Tuesday Zoom meeting. "They have really done a nice job of putting him in position to make plays and he's made a lot of them. He gave us fits in training camp and usually what happens in training camp shows up in the game. The guy works hard and he studies and he's such a tough kid."

Long led BC in receiving yards (509) and yards per reception (18.2) last season, but his skills in the passing game were underutilized in the Eagles' power run offense designed for tailback AJ Dillon. For that double tight end offense to work, Long needed to be a strong blocker. Long has enhanced his receiving skills while maintaining his abilities as blocker, a combination that will result in an NFL job down the line. "Don't take away from him how well he's blocked and that's where he is going to separate himself," said Hafley. "I keep telling him that and it's really impressive to see him doing it in the run game and in the pass game." - Boston Herald

Jurkovec's favorite target, tight end Hunter Long, was the star of night for the Eagles--Jurkovec targeted Long 17 times, and the tight end came down with 96 receiving yards, nearly a third of the entire offense's total passing yards. Out of BC's 353 yards of offense, 313 were through the air. It's a stark contrast to the Eagles of years past, who often relied heavily on the ground game behind AJ Dillon. With the hole that Dillon's departure left in BC's offense-the Eagles gained just 40 yards on the ground this week-it has become clear that the Eagles will only go as far as Jurkovec is able to take them. - The Heights

Even after the 2020 season has already begun, Boston College football and head coach Jeff Hafley are still adding to their roster. Less than an hour before kickoff against Texas State, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Communications Jason Baum announced on his Twitter that graduate transfer defensive end Maximilian Roberts would be joining the Eagles. Roberts, who transferred from the University of Maine, suited up for Saturday night's game and made five tackles against the visiting Bobcats, helping the Eagles to their 24-21 victory. Roberts' decision to transfer came after the Colonial Athletic Association opted out of the 2020 fall football season on July 17, according to BCEagles.com. The defensive end began his collegiate career at Fordham, where he played 20 games during his three seasons with the Rams. Roberts started six games his first two years at linebacker and made 16 total starts, during which he recorded 36 solo and 55 total tackles. - The Heights

Phil Jurkovec hit Hunter Long for a game-tying touchdown with 1:11 left, and Aaron Boumerhi kicked a 36-yard field goal with 3 seconds to play on Saturday night as Boston College rallied to beat Texas State 24-21 and avoid losing to a three-touchdown underdog for the second season in a row. BC (2-0) trailed by two touchdowns in the third quarter and was still down 21-14 in the final minutes when Jurkovec was forced to throw the ball away on a third down at the Texas State 16. But a late hit out of bounds gave the Eagles a first down, and two plays later Jurkovec hit Long from 5 yards out to tie it.

BC forced a three-and-out that used up only 15 seconds, and the Eagles got the ball back with 47 seconds left on their own 33. Jurkovec completed five straight passes to move BC to the 19; the Bobcats (1-3) called all three of their timeouts to ice Boumerhi, who had a kick blocked in the first quarter, but this one was good. Jurkovec completed 26 of 38 passes for 210 yards, with one touchdown and one interception; he also ran in BC's first two scores, from 2 an 3 yards out. Long caught nine passes for 81 yards for the Eagles, who entered the game as a 21.5-point favorite. - Boston College/AP College Football

  09/11/20 - Zion JohnsonrSr/2022, Boston College, 6-3, 314 (DS#1 OG) + More +

For years, BC has churned out top-notch big men on the offensive line-take Chris Lindstrom, for example, drafted No. 14 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Looking to carry on the legacy this year are Zion Johnson and Ben Petrula, who the Eagles voted on to become two of their 2020 captains. Senior linebacker Max Richardson and junior defensive end Marcus Valdez also heard their names called as captains during Wednesday's practice. Running back Travis Levy fills out the final spot as the fifth player to don a capital "C" on the front of his jersey.

"One of the main things is just instincts when it comes to starters-just knowing what's going on on the field through experience," Johnson said during a press conference Wednesday. "We have returners like Ben Petrula and Tyler Vrabel and Alec Lindstrom, so we have that experience, and we work well together. So even with the new scheme, that relationship is still there." Though Johnson is a senior, this year is only in his second year with the Eagles, as he spent his first few years of eligibility with Davidson. But in his first year at BC in 2019, Johnson played 42 snaps off the bench in the season opener against Virginia Tech. He appeared in all 13 games last season, including seven starts, en route to an All-ACC Second Team selection. This year, he earned a Preseason All-ACC selection, and sports analyst Phil Steele named him a Preseason All-American. - The Heights

Boston College tight end Hunter Long blocks like a sixth lineman and stretches the field like a wide receiver. That combination of quality attributes will be put to use in BC's new TE-friendly multiple pro set schemes being implemented by offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. "He can be a huge weapon and even more important is his blocking," said BC coach Jeff Hafley. "When you find a tight end that is successful in the pass game they are usually not as good of a blocker. "You are looking at the complete tight end. He can line up and help us a ton in the run game and at the same time he can flex out and mix in as another receiver for you."

Long led the team with 509 receiving yards on 28 catches last season in former coach Steve Addazio's two tight end "12 personnel" power run scheme. The 6-5, 253-pounder, from Exeter, N.H., averaged 18.8 yards per catch, an absurd number for a pass-eligible appendage on the offensive line. Speedy wide receivers Kobay White and Zay Flowers averaged 15.9 and 15.5 yards per catch, respectively. Long matches up well against two now-NFL tight ends to come out of the ACC in the last four years, BC's Tommy Sweeney (Bills) and Ryan Izzo (Patriots) of Florida State. "He creates a weapon really anywhere on the field when you get into certain field positions," said Hafley. "I'm just really glad he's here and I like the way he works and he handles everything like a pro." - Boston Herald

  09/04/20 - Travis LevyrSr/2022, Boston College, 5-11, 202 (DS#90 RB) + More +

Tailback Travis Levy is an all-purpose H-back type that could fill a variety of roles in offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti's new multiple pro-style offense. Tailback David Bailey served as an accomplished understudy last season to AJ Dillon, a three-time All-ACC ballcarrier who was a third-round pick by the Green Bay Packers. Bailey rushed for 816 yards on 140 carries with seven touchdowns along with nine catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. Bailey will be the Eagles' every-down back and expects to touch the rock 20 to 25 times a game.

Levy has an opportunity to establish his place in the offense as a third-down back on screens and wheel routes out the backfield or as a slot receiver in the spread. Ben Glines was the Eagles' hybrid back last season and Levy possess many of the same skills. "I'm looking forward to whatever role the coaches try and put me in and have an opportunity to make plays on the field," said Levy. "I plan on playing running back and I've been working with the running backs in the room. "This is a great opportunity to develop my run game and last year I was a receiver. I've been working on both all camp and it's been good." - Boston Herald

2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: Trae Berry, Jacksonville State,...Barry, a senior from Summerdale, Ala., was voted to the 2020 Preseason All-OVC squad despite playing in just five games before an injury forced him to miss the remainder of the 2019 season. Despite the injury, he is JSU's leading returning receiver with 25 catches for 330 yards and a touchdown a year ago. He joined Cooper on HERO Sports Sophomore All-America Team in 2018 after catching 32 passes for 503 yards and a score to grab First-Team All-OVC honors that year. Barry enters his senior campaign with 67 career catches for 1,076 yards and five touchdowns. - Jacksonville State Football
