Boston College redshirt junior linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, the team's leading tackler this season, has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-1-inch, 224-pounder finished a 6-5 campaign with a career-high 107 total tackles, ranking fourth nationally and second in the ACC behind NC State's Payton Wilson. McDuffie also chipped in three sacks and 6 1/2 tackles for loss. He announced the decision Friday, a day after tight end Hunter Long opted for the NFL. "We are excited for Isaiah as he begins the next chapter of his football career and we wish him well," said BC coach Jeff Hafley. "We look forward to watching Isaiah play on Sundays." - Boston Globe

Long finishes his collegiate career with 89 receptions for 1,297 yards and nine touchdowns. His 57 receptions this year were the second-most by a tight end in program history, trailing only Pete Mitchell's 66 catches in 1993. Long is meeting with agents and said his plan to is to stay home through the holidays before deciding on where he wants to train for the draft, which is scheduled for April 29-May 1 in Cleveland. "We could not be happier and more supportive of Hunter's decision to enter the NFL Draft," said BC coach Jeff Hafley. "Hunter has been a terrific ambassador on and off the field for our program and we can't wait to watch him play on Sundays."

Playing in two systems, under former coach Steve Addazio, and then in Hafley's first season, has helped Long develop a more versatile skill set. "In my mind I got the best of both worlds," said Long. "I got to play in a more run-heavy scheme [under Addazio] where I had to develop as a blocker, and this year we definitely opened up the playbook a little more and started throwing the ball, which was a lot of fun. I feel in both systems I developed different aspects of my game." - Boston Globe

Within a week of entering the transfer portal, former Temple linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley and defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh have landed at Power 5 schools. Graham-Mobley, who graduated this month, will attend Boston College. Maijeh, a redshirt junior in eligibility, will attend Rutgers, where he will be reunited with former Temple assistant Fran Brown, the secondary coach for the Scarlet Knights. All three were starters on defense.

This continues an exodus of key players via the transfer portal. Quarterback Anthony Russo has transferred to Michigan State. Running back Re'Mahn Davis is at Vanderbilt. Graduate student Vincent Picozzi, the team's top offensive lineman, and kicker Will Mobley, also have entered the portal. Graham-Mobley, who starred locally at Upper Merion and is considered an NFL prospect, said he felt a change of scenery was best. His last two seasons were cut short by ankle injuries, and he appeared in just two games this year for the 1-6 Owls. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

For McDuffie, who only played four games during the 2019 season after sustaining an injury during spring training that year, 2020 was a bounceback year. After seeing the field sparingly as a freshman, McDuffie broke out as a sophomore, notching 85 tackles-5.5 for loss-and 3.5 sacks. His injury sidelined him for most of the next season, but in the last four games of the year he recorded 30 total tackles. A three-star recruit out of Bennett High School in Buffalo, N.Y., McDuffie initially committed to Syracuse in 2015 before flipping his decision to BC in the spring of 2016. In the release, McDuffie said that attending BC was the best decision he ever made. "I fell in love with the game of football from an early age," McDuffie said. "Growing up playing in the streets with my friends or organized, I always had a football by my side." McDuffie finished out his career with 233 total tackles, nearly half of which came this year, 15.5 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks. "I will forever be an Eagle," McDuffie said. "I'm excited for this journey and can't wait to see what life has in store." - The Heights

Boston College redshirt junior tight end Hunter Long has decided to end his collegiate playing career and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Long finished his BC career as one of the most accomplished tight ends in school history. "I would like to start by thanking my family," Long said. "Mom, Dad, Jessica and Hayley, you do not know how much your support has meant to me and how much it has helped me through the highs and lows of my career. I would like to thank all of the coaches that have had a hand in molding the player that I have become. Two coaches I'd especially like to acknowledge are Coach Leonard and Coach Shimko, for I would not be here without your guidance and support. To my brothers at BC, I would not have wanted to play next to anyone else. The brotherhood we formed will last forever and I can't wait to watch you all achieve greatness."

Long has been the top receiving tight end in the nation in 2020. The New Hampshire native leads all tight ends nationally in receptions (57) and receiving yards (685). He is eighth among all tight ends nationally with five touchdown receptions. He finished second in Boston College single-season history for receptions by a tight end, trailing only former Consensus All-America tight end Pete Mitchell's 66 receptions in 1993. For his career, Long finished with 89 receptions for 1,297 yards and nine touchdowns. - Boston College Football

Temple linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley, one of the best players on the team but who has been hit by injuries the last two seasons, said he will be entering the transfer portal. Graham-Mobley made the announcement on Twitter on Friday. In 2019, Graham-Mobley saw extensive action despite playing on a linebacking unit that has three current NFL players, Shaun Bradley (Eagles), Chapelle Russell (Tampa Bay) and Sam Franklin (Carolina). He suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the ninth game. - The Philadelphia Inquirer

Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley and Athletics Director Pat Kraft announced on Thursday that BC football has opted out of participating in a bowl game this season. According to a release from Senior Associate Athletics Director Jason Baum, the team reached the decision as a result of discussions among student-athletes. Both Kraft and Hafley echoed their support of the players' decision at a Zoom media conference on Thursday afternoon.

"You know my job as the head coach and the leader of the team is to have a good pulse for this football team," Hafley said at the press conference. "I just felt like the mental strain and the physical strain was wearing on them, and, you know, mental health is something that's very important to me." Another factor in the decision, Hafley said, was the volatility of the team's chance to play a bowl game. Even if BC had opted in and had been selected to play a bowl game, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no guarantee that the game would have gone forward. As a result, Hafley said, it was better for the Eagles to focus on finishing finals and have the chance to go home and be with their families for the holidays. - The Heights

Since 2009, Boston College football has never finished over .500 in conference play. It's been more than a decade, and this year will be no different. One storyline that did change, however, is that BC had previously never lost to the Cavaliers, dating back to the teams' first matchup in 1963. In the Eagles' 2020 season finale, they showed promise early on despite Phil Jurkovec spending the game in street clothes on the sideline, but a fourth-quarter collapse handed BC a 43-25 defeat. Backup-turned-starting quarterback Dennis Grosel had a career night for the Eagles (6-5, 5-5 Atlantic Coast), tying Doug Flutie's single-game passing record with 520 yards. "Credit to everything he's all about," BC head coach Jeff Hafley said about Grosel in his postgame press conference. "He's a special kid." - The Heights

  12/03/20 - Ben PetrularSr/2022, Boston College, 6-5, 316 (DS#33 OG) + More +

Even with press box restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, BC has hosted eight to 10 NFL scouts at home games. For senior offensive linemen like preseason All-ACC selections Ben Petrula and Zion Johnson, and middle linebacker Max Richardson, participating in a full slate against ranked opponents like Clemson, Notre Dame and North Carolina has been a bonanza in terms of exposure. If Petrula starts against Virginia and in a bowl game, he will have started 48 consecutive games at three different positions.

BC head coach Jeff Hafley has worked in NFL draft war rooms with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and he's learned there is no substitute for time on the field. The BC seniors have a leg up on their positional rivals from conferences playing reduced schedules. "I keep saying this but we are so fortunate because we are getting to play football," said Hafley. "The only way you get better is if you play, so for a guy to go out and make mistakes and learn from them and have success and learn from that and continue to play...They get better and better and see things and react quicker and get coached really well. It's unfortunate for some guys playing only four or five games, you don't grow as much so we are very fortunate on that end." - Boston Herald

When Boston College linebacker Max Richardson decided to return for a fifth season, he never could have imagined the last year of his college career playing out in a pandemic. The first time he stepped on the field at Alumni Stadium was in 2016. There was an announced crowd of 22,728 on hand to watch the Eagles beat Wagner. The stands were empty Saturday for Richardson's final game as an Eagle, a 34-27 win over Louisville, but he was no less appreciative. "I've done a lot of self-reflection these past couple of weeks and it's been a completely interesting journey for me," Richardson said.

"I really appreciate what has happened in the past. Looking back to my first game and Alumni and looking at all the yellow T-shirts in the student section, it's really special that I've been able to go on this long journey here and I really appreciate all the fans and everything that goes into a game and Alumni. "Of course, this year's have been a little different, but there's been some great memories." Richardson was one of a group of 18 seniors who were honored before the game. He returned to the Heights after putting together a season that earned him All-ACC second-team honors a year ago. - Boston Globe
