When Boston College tight end Hunter Long declared himself eligible for the 2021 NFL Draft, he was rated among the top five at the position from a deep field of applicants. The 6-5, 253-pound redshirt junior from Exeter, N.H., was claimed by the Miami Dolphins with the 18th pick in the third round (81st overall) on Friday night. The only tight ends taken before Long were Kyle Pitts of Florida, who became the highest selection ever at that position in the history of the NFL draft when he was taken fourth overall by the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night, and Merrimac native TE Pat Freiermuth of Penn State, who was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round with the 55th overall pick.

"His pro attributes are pretty simple, he is a pro," said BC tight ends coach Steve Shimko. "He prepares like pro, he practices like a pro and performs on the field like a pro. "He comes to meetings knowing the game plan inside and out. He's relentless on the path to perfection." Long's 57 receptions in 11 games are second behind BC All-American tight end Pete Mitchell, who set the program's single season record with 66 catches over 12 games in 1983. - Boston Herald

With last season's linebacking corps cleaned out due to the departure of Max Richardson, Isaiah McDuffie, and John Lamot, Boston College football has had to turn to a host of new faces in the second level. Head coach Jeff Hafley and his staff pulled in a promising pair of transfers in former Florida State safety and linebacker hybrid Jaiden Lars-Woodbey and graduate linebacker transfer Isaiah Graham-Mobley from Temple. BC also secured near-consensus four-star linebacker recruit Bryce Steele, who enrolled early and has participated in spring practice with 11 of his counterparts in the 2021 recruiting class.

The Eagles have also looked internally to fill the void. Kam Arnold appeared sparingly in all 11 games last season at safety, but he has moved to linebacker this spring. "He feels pretty natural, it's a natural progression for him, he's been doing a great job so far," BC linebacker coach Sean Duggan said during Thursday's weekly press conference. "He comes in, gets to work, always asked really good questions, so he's been a really pleasant surprise this spring." Arnold notched 15 tackles and one tackle for loss as a freshman last season. Boston College defensive ends Marcus Valdez and Brandon Barlow are accomplished edge-rushers in pursuit of a higher standard. The Atlantic Coast Conference is populated by some of the most athletic dual-threat quarterbacks in college football. Developing the techniques and disciplines necessary to contain quarterbacks like Louisville's Malik Cunningham has been a focus for BC coach Jeff Hafley in the opening weeks of spring football. The spring season concludes with the annual Jay McGillis Memorial maroon and gold game at Alumni Stadium on April 24. "We need to rush the passer better on the edge, in the middle and we need to blitz better," said Hafley. "We need to affect the quarterbacks more and we are going to do so. We need to do it schematically, fundamentally and with those two players. "They are working on so many different things right now and they have to figure out what they can master in the off-season. They have studied themselves on tape from last year and are building from there. But we are going to need those guys off the edge if we are going to take a step up on defense." Ohio State football put Cameron Martinez's playmaking abilities on display last week, releasing a practice clip of him intercepting not one but two passes. Defensive backs coach Matt Barnes said the behind-the-scenes reports on the redshirt freshman have been equally impressive. "You can't sit in a meeting without hearing great things about him right now," Barnes said. "Whether that's strength and conditioning, our nutritionist brags about him, our training staff brags about him. I just five minutes ago walked out of a special teams meeting where coach (Parker) Fleming was bragging on how well he's done in special teams. "Cam has really, really put his head down and gone to work since this past season ended. And he has got to be one of the most improved guys so far that we've seen." Martinez signed with Ohio State as a multi-faceted talent with a tentative future at defensive back. Because of the pandemic, BC restricted this year's pro day to just former Eagles with tight end Hunter Long of Exeter, N.H., and linebackers Max Richardson and Isaiah McDuffie the featured players. Long saw his receiving numbers jump last season under the direction of first-year offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti and transfer quarterback Phil Jurkovec. Long led the nation among tight ends for receptions (57) and receiving yards (685) and was eighth with five touchdowns. He finished his BC career with 89 receptions and 1,297 yards. The combination of the two systems helped develop Long into the total package. "I think it definitely helped and I kind of had the best of both worlds," said Long. "I was in a run-heavy scheme and seeing a few targets a game to this past year where I was seeing up to 13 or 14 targets per game." - Boston Herald

Boston College conducted its first spring football practice Saturday morning and the Eagles are already excited about how it's all going to end. The ACC network announced on Thursday that it intends to broadcast nine of the league's spring football games. BC's annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game at Alumni Stadium made the cut and will be aired April 24 at a time to be determined. BC brought in 6-foot-1, 223-pound safety Jaiden Lars-Woodbey, a redshirt junior from Florida State with two years of eligibility remaining. Hafley hit a home run last year when he brought in starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec from Notre Dame. The other transfers include a pair of defensive players from Temple, tackle Kris Banks and linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley, and long snapper Gunner Daniel from Wagner.

Lars-Woodbey was a U.S. Army and Under Armour All-American and five-star recruit from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower Calif., the same parochial preparatory institution that produced Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. Leaving high school, Lars-Woodbey was leaning toward Ohio State before committing to FSU at the 11th hour. Lars-Woodbey started 12 games for the Seminoles as a true freshman and recorded 58 tackles, 4.5 for a loss, with a sack, eight pass breakups and a forced fumble. - Boston Herald

West Virginia's football roster has been updated, as the 2020 season fades away and preparations are underway for the 2021 campaign. There were no major surprises in the roster transition, save one - running back Alec Sinkfield is no longer a Mountaineer. The 5-foot-9, 193-pound junior from Boynton Beach, Florida, entered the transfer portal Friday morning, and his days at WVU have apparently come to an end. Sinkfield was second on the team in rushing this past season, netting 327 yards, which was second behind Leddie Brown's 1,010. Last January, Max Richardson decided to forgo the NFL draft and return to the Heights for his fifth year of eligibility, citing his absence from Boston College's bowl game due to a hamstring injury as his reason for staying. With the full 2020 season under his belt, Richardson chose to make the jump to the pro level, announcing on Tuesday that he would be declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft. The announcement came via Richardson's Instagram account. Richardson was a mainstay of the Eagles' defense over the last three seasons, ranking in the top three on the team in tackles all three years. He finished his BC career with 315 total tackles and 32 tackles for loss. His 2019 season was particularly prolific, as he racked up a team-leading 107 tackles and 14 tackles for loss.
