Grayson James came on to throw three fourth-quarter touchdowns then added another in overtime plus a 2-point conversion to give FIU a 38-37 win over Bryant on Thursday night. After Bryant scored on the first possession of overtime on Zevi Eckhaus' pass to Anthony Frederick, James connected with Tyrese Chambers on a 5-yard score. New FIU coach Mike MacIntyre decided to go for two and James found EJ Wilson Jr. for the win. Bryant took a 30-27 lead on Ishod Byarm's 1-yarder with 43 seconds left in regulation and it looked as if the Bulldogs would get their first win over an FBS opponent. But a targeting call on fourth down kept the Panthers alive and James covered 48 yards on three passes to set up Chase Gabriel's 29-yard field goal as time ran out. FIU won after losing its final 11 games last season.

Gunnar Holmberg, Duke's starter last year, threw for a touchdown before James took over in the third quarter. James finished 16-of-31 for 207 yards and Holmberg 14-of-20 for 103. Chambers and Kris Mitchell each had two TD catches. Eckhaus was 18-of-22 passing for 243 yards. Gage Moloney added 106 yards passing with a score. Byarm had two touchdowns. Anthony Frederick had 101 yards receiving with a score. It was Bryant's first game in Florida where fourth-year Bryant's Chris Merritt was head coach at Christopher Columbus High School for 18 years, just a few miles from FIU, before being hired by the Bulldogs. - AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 98. Zay Flowers, WR, Boston College, Senior. Notable 2021 stats: 746 yards, 5 TDs. Last year's ranking: 83. Flowers made headlines in the offseason when he turned down lucrative NIL offers from intermediaries to enter the NCAA transfer portal, staying at Boston College for his senior season. With a healthy Phil Jurkovec back at quarterback and a new offensive coordinator, the belief is the Eagles will utilize Flowers more across the board and put him in position to make plays from multiple spots. - ESPN.com

  08/28/22 - Treshaun WardrSr/2025, Boston College, 5-09, 191 (DS#46 RB) + More +

Treshaun Ward, Trey Benson and Lawrance Toafili surpassed 100 rushing yards and Florida State dominated Duquesne 47-7 in a lightning-delayed game on Saturday. The Seminoles ran for 406 yards and opened the season with a victory for the first time since 2016. Ward (14 carries, 127 yards), Benson (11 carries, 105 yards) and Toafili (13 carries, 101 yards) led the ground attack, which featured six touchdowns. Ward had two TD runs, and Benson had a 41-yard TD as the Oregon transfer frequently racked up yards after contact.

Florida State scored on eight of its first nine drives. Jordan Travis, Toafili and Ward had TD runs as Florida State led 20-0 after the first quarter. Travis completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards. Kentron Poitier had four receptions for 84 yards. Mycah Pittman also had four catches for 44 yards. Johnny Wilson hauled in a 51-yard grab that set up a touchdown. Joe Mischler completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Abdul Janneh in the third quarter for Duquesne. The Dukes capitalized off a short field after Ryan Webb intercepted a pass from Florida State backup Tate Rodemaker. Florida State's defense forced eight punts. The Seminoles had five pass break-ups, including two by safety Jammie Robinson. - Florida State/AP College Football

Ohio State safeties Jantzen Dunn and Cameron Martinez took repetitions at cornerback during practice on Tuesday, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said. The cross-training is a step toward addressing concerns over limited depth at the position. The Buckeyes entered preseason training camp last week with only six scholarship cornerbacks, low numbers that could be even thinner if Jordan Hancock remains banged up. But no matter the timeline for his return, Knowles sees a need to uncover more depth in the upcoming weeks. "You're going to get corners who run all the time back and forth," he said. "You're going to get soft-tissue injuries. And we need to be fresh. So I feel it's definitely something we are keeping our eye on and making sure we get multiple guys their repetitions."

Knowles said he turned to Dunn and Martinez after conferring with secondary coach Tim Walton and safeties coach Perry Eliano. "They decided those are the guys that have exhibited that kind of foot quickness and speed and athleticism to fit the corner position," Knowles said, "and I thought they looked pretty good. I really do." Martinez played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman last fall. Dunn appeared in only one in his first season with the program. A majority of Martinez's snaps were as a cover safety. He also lined up as a free safety. "I was impressed with him since I first saw him," Knowles said. "I think he's got a quickness. He's got a toughness. He's got a mental attitude and fortitude. He's a guy who's a playmaker and focused and doesn't get upset, doesn't panic. Makes a play, comes back and makes another one. Doesn't say much, but you can see he's locked in." - Columbus Dispatch
