  09/17/22 - George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#28 RB) + More +

George Holani accounted for 157 yards of offense and two touchdowns, Hank Bachmeier threw for a pair of scores, and Boise State defeated UT Martin 30-7 on Saturday. Boise State (2-1) used a smothering defense to prop up its sputtering offense, holding UT Martin to 152 yards of total offense. Offensively it was Holani who did it all for Boise State. He caught four passes for 47 yards and a score, while rushing for 110 yards and a TD. UT Martin (1-2), which entered the game ranked 18th in the latest FCS coaches poll, showed some fight early, exiting the first quarter tied at 7. But the Skyhawks gained only 86 yards after their first three drives. Bachmeier, who left the game after a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter on a roughing the passer penalty, was 18 of 25 for 204 yards. Dresser Winn threw for 104 yards and a touchdown for UT Martin. - Boise State/AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 23. JL Skinner, rSr, SS, Boise State, 6-3, 220, 1,...We are still seeking clarification on why Skinner was inactive in Boise State's, 31-14, rebound win over New Mexico. It is a bit of a mystery that local media hasn't solved. FWIW, Kaonohi Kaniho and Alexander Teubner stepped up to fill the void. Previous week, No. 24: Skinner looked 100 percent after a spring car accident as he led Boise State with six tackles and an interception in a 34-17 loss at Oregon State. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 24. JL Skinner, rSr, SS, Boise State, 6-3, 220,...Skinner led Boise State with six tackles and an interception in a 34-17 loss at Oregon State. His exploits are overlooked not only because of the loss, but because most attention is on a brewing quarterback controversy after starter Hank Bachmeier was benched following two interceptions and the team announced open competition for that job this week. Against that background, nobody is chatting up the strong safety, regardless of how well he played. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

  08/29/22 - Titus TolerrSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 201 (DS#999 SS) + More +

As he has reacclimated himself to the field during fall camp, the No. 1 objective of Wisconsin's Titus Toler has been simply to get better. "I want to be the best me I can be," he said. That has been the redshirt junior safety's measured approach to UW's preseason. He is one of the comeback stories of this year's team, a promising talent marred by a slow return from injury that included a brief departure from the program. He hasn't played a game in almost two years, but thanks to a great deal of patience and a greater attention to his mental health, the native of Long Beach, California, is back. "It's just a blessing," he said. "Every day I wake up and thank God that I have the opportunity to do this again." As late as the start of 2021 fall camp, there was hope that Toler, who was injured for most of that spring's practices, would be able to return to play.

Behind the scenes, however, his injury was slow to heal. Toler declined to specify the nature of his injury - 'I can't let them know the weakness,' he said with a smile - but noted that he grew frustrated with the pace of his recovery. The injury was his first major one. The situation took a toll on his psyche. "It's frustrating because when you're doing everything you can to get better and you're not getting better it plays with your mental and really challenges your faith sometimes," he said. "But I pulled through and am glad to be here." - Journal Sentinel

  08/17/22 - Markel ReedrSr/2025, Boise State, 6-0, 184 (DS#156 CB) + More +

Boise State cornerback Markel Reed hasn't played football in 10 months, but he's back on the field this fall competing for a starting job. "It feels good be back out there with the guys and playing with my brothers," Reed told reporters on Tuesday. "This summer was a big stride for me. Getting back in August for camp was the goal." It's been a tough couple of years for Reed, a senior from Temple, Texas. A shoulder injury kept him out of spring practice in 2021, but he fought his way back and started four of the Broncos' first five games last season. Then a knee injury put him on the shelf.

Both injuries required surgery, and Reed said two operations in less than a year took a toll on him. "It was definitely hard dealing with mental issues and stuff like that," he said. "You deal with that with injuries, but you just have to push through. I'm glad to be where I am and to be going 100%." Reed was held out of spring practice this year as he rehabbed from the knee surgery. He said his teammates helped him get through the darkest days, especially edge rusher Demitri Washington, who was healthy for a full slate of spring practices for the first time in his career this year. "All my brothers helped me, encouraging me and throwing me the brotherly love I needed," Reed said. - Idaho Statesman
