Jaylon Henderson threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns, Sonatane Lui had two fumble recoveries, including one for a score, and No. 21 Boise State beat New Mexico 42-9 on Saturday night. Boise State (9-1, 5-0, No. 21 CFP), which maintained its one-game lead atop the Mountain Division, raced out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and was never seriously challenged. It was the first time the Broncos scored that many points in the first quarter since registering 28 against Idaho on Nov. 12, 2010. New Mexico (2-8, 0-6) was playing for the first time since defensive lineman Nahje Flowers died on Nov. 5. The Lobos' game with Air Force was postponed last weekend to allow the team time to grieve Flowers' death.

Henderson, a senior who has seen limited action since transferring to Boise State last season, made the most of his opportunity, starting in place of the injured second-string quarterback Chase Cord. Henderson's first three possessions, including an eight-play, 97-yard drive, ended in touchdowns. The Lobos, who had been competitive in all their league games, avoided getting shut out for the first time this season when Andrew Shelley kicked a 40-yard field goal late in the third quarter. New Mexico added a touchdown late in the fourth. - Boise State/AP College Football

  11/10/19 - Riley WhimpeyrSr/2022, Boise State, 6-1, 231 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

With Boise State clinging to a three-point lead in overtime against Wyoming, Broncos linebacker Riley Whimpey had a chance to seal the game with an interception in the end zone. But, he dropped the ball. Two plays later on third down, Whimpey blitzed and stuffed Wyoming running back Xazavian Valladay in the backfield, forcing a 37-yard field goal attempt that fell short -- a game-ending miss. It was that kind of night for the No. 21 Broncos, who rallied and escaped with a 20-17 overtime victory over the Cowboys.

"When things aren't going our way, we keep our heads up and have that one-play mentality," Whimpey said. "Going all the way back to Florida State and being able to come back in the second half and get the win in that game. This team has an amazing mentality to be able to put our heads down and work and eventually come out on top." With the win, Boise State (8-1, 4-0, No. 22 CFP) keeps its New Year's Day bowl hopes alive as the Group of 5 representative despite playing without injured starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier. Bachmeier was expected to play, but remained on the sidelines due to an undisclosed injury he suffered against San Jose State last week. Chase Cord, making his second start of the season, threw for 190 yards and a touchdown to lead the Broncos offensively. - Boise State/AP College Football

George Holani ran for 126 yards and four touchdowns and No. 21 Boise State bounced back from its first loss of the season by beating San Jose State 52-42 on Saturday night. The Broncos (7-1, 4-0 Mountain West) lost 28-25 at BYU two weeks ago with starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier sidelined but responded following a week off despite falling into an early 14-0 hole. Boise State had six rushing touchdowns and 253 yards on the ground, taking the lead for good on Holani's third touchdown early in the fourth quarter that made it 38-34.

The Broncos then finally got a key defensive stop against the Spartans (4-5, 1-4) thanks to a sack by Curtis Weaver, and Andrew Van Buren provided a cushion with a 32-yard score that made it 45-34 with 6:24 to play. Josh Love threw for 438 yards and cut the deficit to 45-42 on his second TD pass of the game with 3:56 remaining, but it wasn't enough for the Spartans, who fell to 0-14 all-time against Boise State. The Broncos recovered an onside kick following Love's second TD pass and converted a third-and-5 on a 15-yard end-around by John Hightower and Holani put the game away with his fourth TD of the game with 1:35 to play. - Boise State/AP College Football

The Broncos remain the highest ranked non-autonomous 5 program after opening the season 4-0. The Broncos, who will travel to UNLV on Saturday, Oct. 5, are coming off a Mountain West-opening victory over previously undefeated Air Force (30-19) on Sept. 20. In nonconference action, Boise State has defeated Florida State (36-31) on the road and picked up a pair of home victories, defeating C-USA favorite Marshall (14-7) and Portland State (45-10).   Defensive end Curtis Weaver shrugged and smiled wryly when asked about his record-tying performance in No. 22 Boise State's 45-10 victory over Portland State on Saturday night. "It means something to me," Weaver said of matching the school's single-game record of four sacks. "It's always good but, at the end of the day, the whole D-line played a role in it. But we've got to keep moving forward. We've got the Mountain West conference play now and that's still our goal." Weaver served as a perfect spokesperson for the Broncos' business-like approach to playing an FCS school for only the third time since 2010. Instead of getting caught looking past the Vikings, Boise State was laser focused. But as focused as Boise State was, it didn't lack for flashy and explosive plays.

John Hightower returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to get Boise State's scoring started. C.T. Thomas scored the first of two touchdowns on a one-handed snag after getting tipped by his defender. And Stefan Cobbs scored on his first ever catch, racing 44 yards to the end zone and losing his helmet on a hit after he had scored. Then there was Weaver wreaking havoc in the Vikings' backfield on just about every play in the second half. "If (Weaver) continues to stay humble and hungry, hopefully good things keep happening," Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. Good things have been happening by the boatloads for the Broncos' defense in the second half. Boise State (3-0) has yet to allow any points in the second half this season, joining Wisconsin as the only two schools to still hold that distinction. - Boise State/AP College Football

  08/27/19 - Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Southern California quarterback Jack Sears has entered the transfer portal after failing to win the starting job in a four-man competition. Sears, a redshirt sophomore, announced his plans in a statement he posted to Twitter on Tuesday. Sears' decision came less than one week after coach Clay Helton announced sophomore J.T. Daniels would start for the second straight season. "Just heard about it. Obviously, all the quarterbacks, the whole team is bummed out," Daniels said after practice Tuesday night. "Jack was my roommate at the hotels the whole year last year. He really has been like an older brother. He's been a great supporter for me, a great friend. I'm going to really miss Jack."

The Trojans held an open contest among all four scholarship quarterbacks during spring practice and training camp as part of their transition to the Air Raid spread offense. Freshman Kedon Slovis was named the backup, with redshirt junior Matt Fink third on the depth chart and Sears fourth. Sears seemed to be in contention with Daniels to start coming out of spring, only to fall behind Slovis and Fink over the course of camp. Helton said he and new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell recognized the emergence of Slovis, a three-star recruit from Scottsdale, Arizona, left Sears unlikely to see playing time barring a spate of injuries. - AP College Football
