  11/12/20 - Avery WilliamsrSr/2021, Boise State, 5-08, 187 (DS#23 CB) + More +

Avery Williams blocked two punts that were returned for touchdowns in the first half, Boise State had three special teams touchdowns off blocked kicks, and the Broncos routed Colorado State 52-21 on Thursday night. Williams recovered his own blocked punt for a touchdown 52 seconds into the game. Late in the first half, Williams came off the edge and blocked his second punt, this one picked up by DJ Schramm and returned 20 yards for a TD that made it 42-7.

Williams was the Mountain West special teams player of the year a season ago. He has seven career special teams touchdowns, the first six coming on kickoff or punt returns, including an 88-yard kickoff return fort a TD this season at Air Force. Kekaula Kaniho also returned a blocked field goal 91 yards for a score late in the first quarter. It was the first time Boise State had multiple blocked kicks returned for touchdowns in a game since moving to the FBS in 1996. The Broncos (3-1, 3-0 Mountain West) rebounded from last week’s 51-17 drubbing by No. 8 BYU, the worst home loss for Boise State since 1996. - AP College Football

  11/03/20 - Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The Boise State football team climbed four spots to No. 21 in the latest AP Top 25 poll on Sunday and cracked the top 25 in the coaches poll, coming in at No. 23. Last week, the Broncos made their regular-season debut in the AP poll at No. 25. They were just outside the top 25 in the Coaches poll. On Saturday, the Broncos (2-0) passed their first road test of the season with a 49-30 win at Air Force (1-2). Making his first start as a Bronco, quarterback Jack Sears racked up four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing), including a 75-yard touchdown strike to CT Thomas on his first pass of the game. Sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier missed the game for undisclosed reasons.

Starting safety JL Skinner also didn't make the trip, and Boise State lost running back George Holani, defensive end Demitri Washington and nose tackle Scale Igiehon to injury during the game. No information on the severity of their injuries was available after the game, but Washington was taken to the locker room on a cart. Boise State is one of five teams from the Group of Five in the AP top 25, led by Cincinnati (5-0), which moved up to No. 6 after a dominant win over American Athletic Conference rival Memphis. Two more undefeated teams - Coastal Carolina (6-0) and Marshall (5-0) - are Nos. 15 and 16, respectively, and SMU (6-1) is ranked No. 18. - Idaho Statesman

  10/31/20 - Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Jack Sears' first throw as a starting quarterback in two years went for a 75-yard touchdown. That's not a bad way to make an instant impression with his new teammates. Sears threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score while filling in for starter Hank Bachmeier, Avery Williams scored on an 88-yard kickoff return and No. 25 Boise State beat Air Force 49-30 on Saturday night. The last time Sears started a game was 2018 - when he was a redshirt freshman at Southern California. He threw for 235 yards and two TDs that day against Arizona State. In between then and Saturday, he's had quite a journey: playing backup for the Trojans and sitting out last season to focus on his degree before transferring to Boise State. He played a few snaps in a blowout win last weekend against Utah State - throwing three passes - but nothing like his performance Saturday, with Bachmeier not making the trip for an unspecified reason. Asked about when he found out he was starting, Sears played coy. He did say the decision wasn't sprung on him. Sears made the most of his chance by finishing 17 of 20 for 280 yards and no turnovers. - AP College/Boise State Football

  10/21/20 - Brock MillerrSr/2022, Boise State, 6-2, 234 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

This year has been a wild ride for Boise State linebacker Brock Miller. He transferred from N.C. State for what was supposed to be his final year of eligibility and moved across the country to a city he'd never visited. He's diving into a new playbook full of unfamiliar terminology, and trying to ingratiate himself to his new teammates while COVID-19 continues to alter the college football landscape. And he somehow found time to get married. "It's been a crazy 2020, and it's definitely been a learning process, coming to a new school and trying to learn the system and learn the culture," Miller told reporters this month.

Miller committed to Boise State in January after having started 11 games for the Wolfpack in 2019. At N.C. State, he lined up as a boundary linebacker in a 3-3-5 scheme - a role he said was similar to the Broncos' STUDs - and at weak-side linebacker in a 4-2-5 scheme. The Port St. Lucie, Florida, native's familiarity with different positions and formations and his experience in games against the likes of No. 1 Clemson have already stood out to his new coach. "He's got a maturity about him," Boise State coach Bryan Harsin told reporters. "He's going to come in here and work, he's going to do his part and he's going to build trust with coaches and players on the team." - Idaho Statesman

  10/21/20 - Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Boise State released its initial depth chart Monday ahead of this weekend's season opener against Utah State, and a newcomer will back up sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier despite the fact that he hasn't played in a game since Nov. 27, 2018. Jack Sears, a graduate transfer from USC, will open the fall as the Broncos' No. 2 quarterback after signing with the team in February. He spent the past three years with the Trojans but sat out last season to focus on completing his undergraduate degree. Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said Monday that he's seen enough from Sears to be comfortable with him playing. He also said it's impossible to simulate the physicality and speed of a game during the week because, like at most programs around the country, the Broncos' quarterbacks are donning red jerseys in practice, which means they're off-limits.

In 2018, Sears was USC's No. 3 quarterback, but he impressed in his only outing of the season. Facing Arizona State, he completed 20-of-28 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Harsin feels like he knows what Sears can do on the field. Now it's just a matter of him settling into another new system after having already gone through multiple offensive coordinators at USC. "That's probably the most challenging thing at the quarterback position, learning a new system," Harsin said. "It's really the same plays but in a different language." - Idaho Statesman

One of the biggest surprises on Boise State's depth chart was on the defensive line where redshirt sophomore Demitri Washington is listed at defensive end, but Harsin warned not to put too much stock in where he's listed on the two-deep because he's going to line up in multiple positions. "He's that guy that keeps taking that next step, and that provides us the opportunity to move him around," Harsin said. Last season, Washington appeared in all 14 games - mostly at STUD - and posted 4.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. At 6-foot-3 and 272 pounds, he has the size to help against the run, but his athleticism makes him an ideal candidate to replace former STUD Curtis Weaver's Mountain West-leading 13.5 sacks. - Idaho Statesman

  09/25/20 - Avery WilliamsrSr/2021, Boise State, 5-08, 187 (DS#23 CB) + More +

The Mountain West Conference Board of Directors met last night and approved plans to resume football competition following the Aug. 10 indefinite postponement of fall sports due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Conference’s amended regular-season schedule will begin on Saturday, Oct. 24, with the intent to play eight games. The MW Football Championship Game is slated for Saturday, Dec. 19. Any return to competition is subject to state, county and local approvals.

The Mountain West has partnered with Quest Diagnostics to implement testing protocols across all member institutions. The agreement with Quest delivers frequent testing with rapid results, providing a major step forward for sport competition to resume. The Mountain West will require all football student-athletes, coaches, trainers and other individuals that are on the field to undergo testing three times per week. - Mountain West Football

  08/28/20 - Jabril FrazierrSr/2019, Boise State, 6-4, 239 (DS#32 DE) + More +

Two former Boise State defensive linemen have landed coaching positions with the Broncos. On Tuesday, the program announced the hiring of former pass rusher Jabril Frazier as a defensive graduate assistant and the addition of recently graduated lineman Chase Hatada to the strength and conditioning staff. Frazier couldn't contain his excitement on Twitter. "Excited to be back home on the blue to start this new journey," he posted. "GO BRONCOS!" Frazier was a two-time All-Mountain West pick at Boise State, earning first-team honors as a senior in 2018. He was second on the team that year in sacks (5.5) and tackles for loss (nine). He posted a career-high six sacks in 2017 and finished his college career with 17. The Los Angeles native joined the New York Jets last year as an undrafted free agent, but he never appeared in a game. - Idaho Statesman

  08/18/20 - Robert MahonerSr/2022, Boise State, 5-09, 221 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Boise State running back Robert Mahone has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested Monday and charged with domestic battery or assault in the presence of a child. Mahone, a redshirt senior, is facing a misdemeanor charge, according to the Ada County Sheriff's Office. A team spokesperson confirmed Monday evening that the football player has been suspended from all team activities. At around 5:15 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to a home near North Allumbaugh Street and West Fairview Avenue after being notified of a possible domestic disturbance and that a child was present, according to a Boise Police Department spokesperson. Officers arrived and located a suspect, identified by authorities as Mahone. After an investigation, police arrested Mahone on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge. He was booked into the Ada County Jail at around 6:30 p.m. - Idaho Statesman

  08/07/20 - Tyreque JonesrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 195 (DS#18 FS) + More +

Football players from around the Mountain West sent the conference a letter Thursday evening, demanding more protections from COVID-19 if there's to be a fall season. The letter, posted on Twitter by several players, including Boise State's Tyreque Jones, began with #MWUnited. In the letter, players said they don't feel safe training and competing under current conditions. The Mountain West covers eight states, and on Wednesday, the league announced an eight-game conference schedule while giving teams the option to play two nonconference games. "It is difficult to believe that hundreds of 17- to 22-year-old college students are capable of social distancing effectively enough to travel state-to-state for 10 weeks," Thursday's statement read. "This is evident in the report released by several schools that have had an increase in cases of COVID-19 following return to OTA-style workouts." For those reasons, the players composed a list of conditions to be agreed upon by the conference, coaches and athletes to "ensure our health, safety and well-being," per the statement. - Idaho Statesman
