  08/02/22 - Kedon Slovis, rSr/2024, BYU, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

When will Pitt coach PattNarduzzi name a starting QB? We all know college coaches don't like to give anything away, and Narduzzi's no exception. That brings us to Kenny Pickett's successor. You have to figure it's Kedon Slovis' job to lose after the former Pac-12 freshman of the year transferred in from USC. But Nick Patti won't make it easy on him, and Narduzzi will lean into the competition storyline as long as he can. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

  08/01/22 - Christopher Brooks, rSr/2023, BYU, 6-1, 219 (DS#40 RB) + More +

Whenever the Cougars needed to put a game away late during the 2021 season, they inevitably turned to running back Tyler Allgeier to get the job done - and he always came through. Now Allgeier is with the Atlanta Falcons and it appears that role will go to Brooks, who transferred from Cal. Brooks, who had 1,734 yards rushing with 14 touchdowns and 50 catches for 345 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver in 40 games with the Bears, showed enough during spring to get the nod as BYU's starting running back. Now that confidence has to be rewarded. Brooks will have veteran offensive line as well as bruising fullbacks to open up holes, so now he just has to perform. - Daily Herald

  07/26/22 - Gerry Bohanon, rSr/2025, BYU, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

The latest quarterback derby of the Jeff Scott era likely will be the shortest. During a recent radio interview that originally aired on WDAE, Scott said the plan is for competition to be staged during the first half of fall camp, allowing the starter to then log significant first-team reps heading into the Sept. 3 opener against Brigham Young at Raymond James Stadium. "It's not my intention to really have a quarterback battle that's going to linger on into the season," said Scott, whose team begins practice on Aug. 3. That approach differs significantly from the past two years, when Scott - who has used five starting quarterbacks in his 21-game tenure - made it clear his intention was to identify a clear-cut starter by the first American Athletic Conference game.

This go-round, sophomore left-hander Timmy McClain, who started nine games last season (2,126 total yards, five passing TDs, seven INTs), will be challenged by 6-foot-3 Baylor transfer Gerry Bohanon, who made 12 starts (throwing for 2,200 yards) for the Big 12 champions in 2021. Sophomore Katravis Marsh (two career starts), redshirt freshman Jordan Smith and freshman Byrum Brown are the other scholarship quarterbacks. "We're very excited about Timmy McClain. Timmy's got a great future ahead of him," Scott said. "I think for me, the biggest thing was, we wanted to add some experience to that room, because that room overall is very young; there's a lot of first- and second-year players. And Gerry's a guy that took over last year at Baylor, a team that was coming off a two-win season, and Gerry was able to lead them on to a Big 12 championship." - Tampa Tribune

He caught 10 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 10.6 yards per reception. The 6-6, 247-pound tight end had eight games with at least one reception. The previous season he was ranked No. 1 in the nation among freshman tight ends in receptions (37), receiving yards (429) and receiving touchdowns (12). He was named a 2020 Freshman All-American by the Athletic and Phil Steele. - BYU Football

  07/22/22 - Ben Bywater, rSr/2025, BYU, 6-3, 235 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Not many defenders can say they had nearly seven times more tackles last year than they had in their first two seasons - but Ben Bywater can. After being limited to six total games and 15 tackles in 2019 and 2020, he had a breakout year in 2021 as he led the team with 102 tackles. As injuries decimated that Cougar linebackers, Bywater made the most of his opportunities and proved to be a dynamic presence. Heading into 2022, the sophomore appears to be even more confident and determined to see the BYU defense take some big steps forward. His proven on-field ability and leadership will be key for the Cougars as they take one some good offenses this fall. - Daily Herald
