  10/15/22 - J.T. ShroutrSr/2024, Arkansas State, 6-3, 215 (DS#60 QB) + More +

J.T. Shrout threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Montana Lemonious-Craig in overtime, powering Colorado to a 20-13 upset of California in interim coach Mike Sanford's debut Saturday. Jack Plummer had Mason Starling wide open for the score on first-and-goal from the 10 on Cal's ensuing possession but strong safety Trevor Woods arrived just after the pass and popped the ball loose. When Plummer's fourth-down pass fell incomplete, the students stormed the field to celebrate Colorado's first win of the season.

Sanford inherited a team that was off to just the fourth 0-5 start in school history, one that cost Karl Dorrell his job. Sanford placed an immediate emphasis on physicality and takeaways, which paid off on Colorado's first defensive series with Tyrin Tyler's sliding interception, the Bears' first turnover in four games. Cal (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) entered the game as a 15 1/2-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, but Dario Longhetto was wide left on field-goal tries going both ways, missing from 54 yards in the first quarter and 48 in the second. Longhetto was good from 34 yards as time expired in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. The Bears won the toss and chose to start out on defense. - Colorado/AP College Football

As quarterback Maddox Kopp stood at the podium on Tuesday, answering questions from the media for the first time since joining the Colorado Buffaloes, JT Shrout walked to the back of the media scrum. Shrout, a junior quarterback, pretended to hold out a microphone and laughed a bit as he listened to Kopp. Earlier in the morning, Shrout "was out there celebrating any single victory," offensive coordinator Mike Sanford said. "Not because it was about him, but because he loves football that much, and he missed football that much." Mentally and physically, Shrout is in a much different place than he was 11 months ago. A knee injury on Aug. 14, 2021, cost him the entire season. This week, for the first time since then, he has been fully cleared to practice and he's once again competing for the starting job with incumbent Brendon Lewis.

"Really happy to be out there again," Shrout said when he took his turn at the podium. After three seasons at Tennessee, where he played in eight games (with one start), Shrout transferred to CU in January of 2021. He was looking for a chance to start and spent the entire offseason battling for the job. During a live scrimmage at Folsom Field, he made a cut to his right, tore up his knee, and was done for the year. "It was depressing almost," he said. "It was really hard. Football is my first love, so not being able to go out there and play was really difficult for me. But I tried to stay in it mentally as much as I could. That was helpful." - Daily Camera

Arkansas State's Kivon Bennett was long aware he'd be changing positions this offseason. It was a move he and Red Wolves Coach Butch Jones had planned upon his arrival in Jonesboro last spring. But knowing he would transition from defensive end to outside linebacker didn't necessarily make the shift easy for Bennett. He acknowledged throughout spring camp that he was still making mistakes and trying to "not bash [himself] too much" for them.

Fast forward a few months and the preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection said he believes he's in a much better place. "I'm where I need to be," Bennett told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette when asked about his position change. "I felt way more confident over the summer, even though we haven't had pads on...I know it's going to be different when the game comes. It's probably going to take me maybe the first game or so [to adjust], but I'm not too worried about it." Going into his final collegiate season, Bennett said he is hoping to cement himself as an NFL prospect, and there's a consensus both inside and outside the program that playing linebacker will give Bennett the best chance to reach that level. - Northwest Arkansas Times
