Kicker Parker Lewis was meeting with Lincoln Riley in December when he decided to transfer from USC. In one of his earliest conversations with the Trojans' newly hired coach, he asked Riley about his plans to manage special teams. Throughout his tenure at Oklahoma, Riley had eschewed hiring a dedicated special teams coordinator, instead splitting up the responsibilities for kicking and punting among other position coaches. He told Lewis he planned to do the same at his new stop.

"I just didn't like it," Lewis said, "and I wanted to be with a coach that's developed significant players, something that would be better for me in my development. I talked with my family, and we just thought it would be best if I searched for other opportunities." Putting his name in the transfer portal and leaving USC was not an easy decision. The school held sentimental significance for Lewis. His grandfather, Ben Butler, was a tackle who was once on the cusp of playing for the Trojans before tearing a shoulder in his final high school game, a setback that ended his football career. Joining the program felt like fulfilling a family dream, and he wore the uniform No. 48 as a tribute to the year of his grandfather's last snap in 1948. - Columbus Dispatch

Former USC kicker Parker Lewis announced on Friday afternoon (April 29) that he is transferring to Ohio State. "Excited to be a buckeye," he tweeted. Lewis spent two seasons with the Trojans, making 26 of 35 field-goal attempts and 46 of 47 extra-point attempts. He entered the transfer portal in December with three seasons of collegiate eligibility left and had visited Columbus for the Buckeyes' spring game on April 16. His arrival will leave the Buckeyes with a fair bit of placekicking depth as they return Noah Ruggles, who was one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award last season, and Jake Seibert, who is also on scholarship.

Ruggles was not enrolled for the spring semester and did not participate in spring practice, but he is expected to be back in the fall for his final season of eligibility. Once Ruggles departs next year, Lewis would be in line to compete with Seibert to be the team's primary placekicker. Seibert has been with Ohio State for two seasons and made 1 of 2 field-goal attempts and 16 of 16 extra-point attempts. Lewis is held in high regard for a strong right leg. He made a field goal from 52 yards last fall, and most of his kickoffs landed in the end zone for touchbacks. He booted touchbacks on 27 of 34 kickoffs last season, a 79.4% rate that ranked 11th among kickers in the Football Bowl Subdivision. - Columbus Dispatch

Former Iowa State offensive tackle Joey Ramos is transferring to Arizona State, he announced Monday on Twitter. Ramos is a Metro Phoenix native and played high school ball at Deer Valley in Glendale. He spent four seasons at Iowa State, redshirting in 2018 before finding a special teams role in 2019. The following season, he started five games on offense and was a part of a unit that allowed the fewest sacks in the Big 12. The 6-foot-5, 305-pounds lineman played 13 games last year, though most prominently on special teams, and has two years of eligibility remaining. He picked ASU over his other announced top choices of Bowling Green and Tulsa. He was a consensus three-star recruit out of high school and No. 7 prospect in Arizona, according to 247Sports. - ArizonaSports.com

The Cougars will be without McCaskill for most, if not all, of the season after he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee late in the spring. McCaskill had a sensational freshman season, rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns to earn AAC Rookie of the Year. He made an impact from the start and became the type of every-down back that has been in short supply at UH.

There is no timetable for his return, but it's clear the Cougars will not have one of their top offensive weapons for an extended period in what is likely the school's final year in the AAC before a move to the Big 12. "Can he get back to the point he can play in a couple of games?" coach Dana Holgorsen said. "That's not my decision, either. That's medical decisions. If that happens, great. If not, we'll get him ready for spring (2023)." Not only was McCaskill so valuable as a workhorse (team-high 189 carries), but he also was a threat to catch passes out of the backfield (21 receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns). McCaskill, one of the top-rated signees in school history, lived up to the hype with his 16 rushing touchdowns a freshman record and the second-most by any UH player in a single season, behind quarterback Greg Ward Jr.'s 21 in 2015. "I'm here to be legendary and break records," McCaskill said during his first year. - Houston Chronicle
