  Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in transfer portal or planning to join as of Dec. 1 is Georgia Tech's Jeff Sims: Sims was one of the nation's top 20 quarterbacks in the 2020 recruiting class in the On3 Consensus rankings, but has been inconsistent with the Yellow Jackets. He started 10 games as a true freshman on a bad team during the COVID season, and may not truly have been ready to start. Sims started six games in 2021 and the first seven this season before being sidelined by an injury. He is seventh in school history in both passing yards and total offense. Sims has good size (6-4, 219) and is a definite running threat.   2022 ALL-BIG SKY FIRST TEAM: RB Cameron Skattebo (SAC),...Skattebo is the third Sacramento State player to earn Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year following running back Charles Roberts (1998, 1999) and quarterback Kevin Thomson (2019). Skattebo was also named to the all-Big Sky first team after a season in which he rushed for 1,251 yards. The sophomore also caught 24 passes for 281 yards and finished the year with nine total touchdowns (5 rushing, 3 receiving, 1 kick return). He had seven 100-yard games during the season, including a season high 201 at Eastern Washington. The Rio Linda, Calif., native is currently sixth in school single season history for rushing yards and is second with an average of 7.41 yards per carry.   Georgia Tech has lost two quarterbacks for the rest of the season with former starter Jeff Sims nursing a foot injury and No. 1 backup Zach Pyron out with a broken collarbone, interim coach Brent Key said Tuesday. Sims, the team's starter since 2020, will spend the rest of the season in treatment and will not be a part of team activities, Key said. Sims dressed the last three weeks and was listed as available on an emergency basis but he didn't take a snap when Pyron was injured and had to leave last week's 35-14 home loss to Miami in the fourth quarter.

Sims initially injured his foot in a loss Oct. 20 to Virginia. "He's frustrated he has an injury that's preventing him from being full speed and allowing him to be part of the team," Key said. "Just because on paper you medically can (play), every day you wake and feel a little bit different. The ability for him to go out and be the person he wants to be on the field didn't present itself at the time." Zach Gibson, a transfer from Akron, will start when Georgia Tech (4-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) visits No. 13 North Carolina (9-1, 6-0) on Saturday. Taisun Phommachanh, a transfer from Clemson, will serve as the primary backup. Phommachanh, who played in 13 games over three seasons as a backup with Clemson, has not taken a snap this year.   Trenton Bourguet threw for 435 yards and three touchdowns, all of which went to tight end Jalin Conyers, and Xazavian Valladay ran for three touchdowns as Arizona State racked up 557 total yards and held off a late push for a 42-34 victory against Colorado on Saturday night. The Sun Devils (3-5, 2-3 Pac-12) scored a touchdown on each of their first two drives, going a combined 139 yards in 15 plays. Bourguet completed his first nine passes for 161 yards. On its way to a 28-17 halftime lead, an Arizona State offense that entered the night averaging 353.6 yards had put up 327 while averaging 8.4 yards per play. It finished the game with 10 plays of at least 20 yards.

Despite allowing those gaudy offensive numbers, Colorado (1-7, 1-4) remained competitive for much of the first half. On a third-and-12 late in the second quarter, Buffaloes quarterback J.T. Shrout found freshman wide receiver Jordyn Tyson in stride for a 58-yard touchdown to get within 21-17. The Sun Devils, however, responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge from Valladay. Arizona State led by at least 15 points for much of the second half, but an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown from Tyson got Colorado within 42-34 with 3:50 remaining. The Sun Devils were able to mount a seven-play, 36-yard drive that ran out the clock.   Quarterback Jeff Sims ran for 95 yards and threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with an injury on the first play of overtime and Georgia Tech held on for a 23-20 victory over Duke on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won two straight for the first time since they beat Miami and Virginia in November 2018. A 26-21 win last week at then-No. 24 Pittsburgh snapped a nine-game losing streak against FBS opponents. A week after stopping a 13-game ACC losing streak, Duke (4-2, 1-1) floundered most of the game until Sahmir Hagans' 81-yard punt return for a touchdown down the right sideline pulled the Blue Devils within 20-13 with 5:55 remaining.

The Jackets lost leading receiver Nate McCollum, who had eight catches for 101 yards, to an injury with 5:45 left in the game. They quickly punted, and Hagans ran the ball back 50 yards to the Georgia Tech 44. But a fourth down from the 39 resulted in LaMiles Brooks' pass breakup on a drag route. Georgia Tech's defense had to make one last stand in regulation but couldn't overcome three 15-yard penalties that advanced Duke to the 2, before tight end Nicky Dalmolin hauled in a TD catch to send the game to overtime. The Jackets took a 23-20 lead in overtime on Gavin Stewart's 37-yard field goal. On Duke's lone possession of overtime, an offensive pass interference call against the Devils pushed the ball back to the 34 and Charlie Ham was short on a 52-yard kick to end it.   Trenton Bourguet threw for three touchdowns after Emory Jones was injured, Xazavian Halladay accounted for two more scores and Arizona State beat No. 21 Washington 45-38 on Saturday for interim coach Shaun Aguano's first victory. The Sun Devils (2-4, 1-2 Pac-12) lost their first two games after Herm Edwards was fired Sept. 18, though played No. 6 Southern California close last week before fading late. Bourguet adeptly led the offense after Jones was injured in the second quarter against Washington, throwing for 182 yards on 15-of-21 passing with an interception. He hit Elijhah Badger for two touchdowns, including a 2-yarder in the fourth quarter to put the Sun Devils up 45-38. Arizona State stopped the Huskies on fourth-and-9 near midfield and a botched snap all but ended the Washington's final drive.

Washington (4-2, 1-2) had a solid offensive day in the desert, rallying from a 14-point deficit to tie it on Cameron Davis' third rushing TD, from 5 yards out. Michael Penix Jr. threw for 311 yards on 33-of-53 passing, but no touchdowns. The Huskies struggled defensively in last week's loss to UCLA and continued to have breakdowns against the Sun Devils to remain winless in Tempe since 2001 (eight games). Bourguet, a three-year backup, was sharp after Jones took a shot to the head in the second quarter from Washington safety Asa Turner, who was ejected for targeting. Halladay scored on an 11-yard run the next play and Bourget followed with a 14-yard TD pass to Halladay, throwing to the flat with a blitzing defender in his face. Arizona State went up 24-10 when Penix had a pass deflected at the line of scrimmage and Jordan Clark intercepted it for a 38-yard touchdown.   Jake Dunniway threw two touchdown passes, Cameron Skattebo scored three TDs, and Sacramento State beat Cal Poly 49-21 Saturday night for the Hornets seventh consecutive road win. The Hornets, ranked No. 5 in the FCS coaches poll, have not yet trailed in a game this season and have won 12 regular-season games in a row, dating to last season. Dunniway completed 16 of 22 passes for 246 yards with an interception and Skattebo ran 10 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns and his 16-yard touchdown reception gave the Hornets a 21-0 lead with 5 minutes left in the second quarter. Asher O'Hara, who started at quarterback but split time with Dunniway, was 7-of-11 passing for 91 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Justin Gipson, and added 13 carries for 68 yards and a TD for Sacramento State (4-0, 1-0 Big Sky).   Jeff Sims passed for a touchdown and ran for another, Hassan Hall piled up 157 yards rushing and Georgia Tech made interim head coach Brent Key a winner in his debut, stunning No. 24 Pittsburgh 26-21 on Saturday night. Five days after Key was promoted to replace Geoff Collins - fired four games into his fourth season with the Yellow Jackets - Georgia Tech took advantage of some sloppy play by the defending ACC champions to beat an FBS opponent for the first time in nearly a year. Linebacker Charlie Thomas recovered a fumble and picked off Pitt quarterback Kedon Slovis to set up two of Gavin Edwards' five field goals as the inspired Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1 ACC) converted three Pitt turnovers into 13 points, including a 21-yard touchdown pass from Sims to E.J. Jenkins with 10:30 to play that gave Georgia Tech a 19-7 lead. The Panthers (3-2, 0-1) drew within five on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Slovis to Jaden Bradley with 1:57 to go but Hall raced 63 yards on the first play of Georgia Tech's ensuring possession and Sims darted in from 18 yards out with 1:25 remaining to seal it.

The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak to FBS opponents by the Yellow Jackets, the last five by a combined score of 210-20, including a 27-10 setback to UCF last weekend that ultimately cost Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury their jobs. Tasked with trying to make something of his alma mater's season, Key promised the Yellow Jackets would “play the best brand of football we possibly can.” At soggy and cold Acrisure Statdium, that meant relying heavily on a defense that never let Slovis or the Panthers get comfortable until they were too far behind. The USC transfer completed a deceiving 26 of 45 passes for 305 yards with three touchdowns - two in the final 2 minutes - and an interception as Pitt's offense sputtered in the second half without junior running back Israel Abanikanda.   Geoff Collins is out as Georgia Tech's football coach, fired Monday in the midst of his fourth season after failing to make headway with a brash plan to turn the Yellow Jackets into a national powerhouse through branding and promoting Atlanta's big-city culture. Collins was officially dumped during a meeting of the athletic association board two days after a 27-10 loss to Central Florida left him with a record of 10-28 at Georgia Tech. Brent Key, the assistant head coach under Collins, was appointed interim head coach. He doesn't have much time to settle in: The Yellow Jackets are at No. 24 Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Collins, whose team is 1-3 this season, finished with a winning percentage of just .263 - the lowest of 13 full-time coaches in the school's history. Bill Lewis had been the only Yellow Jackets coach to lose his job during a season. He resigned after a 1-7 start in 1994 when it became clear he would be fired. Collins was the third Football Bowl Subdivision coach to be let go in the opening month of this season, following Scott Frost at Nebraska and Herm Edwards at Arizona State. Georgia Tech also dismissed athletic director Todd Stansbury, who hired Collins and provided steadfast support even as the losses mounted. Frank Neville, chief of staff to university President Ángel Cabrera, will take over as interim AD while the school begins a search this week to fill both positions.   SEPT 26 PAC-12 OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Ben Coleman, RS Jr., LT, California (Murrieta, Calif.),...Coleman played a key role in helping Jaydn Ott rewrite much of Cal's record book with Ott's performance Saturday when he rushed for 274 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries in the Golden Bears' 49-31 home victory over Arizona...Played all 70 snaps at left tackle and was the only Cal offensive lineman to start at the same position as the previous contest at Notre Dame. Coleman had three pancake blocks and his 93% grade from the Cal coaches was the highest on the offensive line....Cal's 49 points scored was their most since 2018 while their 354 yards rushing as a team was the most for the Golden Bears since 2003 and 599 yards of total offense the most since 2021. The offensive line did not allow a sack and gave up only 2.0 tackles for loss (-4 yards)...Second time Coleman has earned this honor, having been selected in Week 12 of last year.   SEPT 19 MAC WEST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jesus Gomez, Eastern Michigan, Kicker, Sophomore, Puebla, Mexico (Prepa Tec Puebla),...Sophomore kicker Jesus Gomez split the uprights on a 27-yard field goal attempt with 11:04 in the first quarter. It was the first field goal make of his career. Moreover, it was the first three-point attempt for Eastern Michigan this season.
