Jeff Sims set an Arizona State quarterback rushing record with 228 yards, finished with 405 yards of total offense and had a hand in three touchdowns to lead the Sun Devils past Iowa State 24-19 Saturday. Sims got the record when he broke an 88-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to put the Sun Devils (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) up 24-16. Mark Malone set the previous record in 1978 when he ran for 178 yards against Southern California. The Cyclones (5-4, 2-4) lost their fourth straight game when they were stopped a yard short at the ASU 20 on a fourth-and-6 with 16 seconds left. Sims carried 29 times for the Sun Devils and completed 13 of 24 passes for 174 yards. Chamon Metayer caught six passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, and Raleek Brown ran 16 times for 64 yards. Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht was 18 of 36 for 186 yards, fewest since since Week 2 against Iowa. - Arizona State/AP College Football

  10/31/25 - Sam LeavittrSo/2028, Arizona State, 6-2, 205 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt will miss the rest of the year because of a lingering right foot injury. Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham told Arizona Sports on Friday that Leavitt will have season-ending surgery. "He's been battling and fighting. He's the ultimate competitor," Dillingham said. "This is like the worst, obviously, news that he wanted to hear because it means he can't play football. He loves the game of football. He loves this place. So, it's definitely unfortunate for him." Leavitt was initially injured against Baylor on Sept. 20 and didn't play in a loss to No. 24 Utah two weeks later. He returned to lead Arizona State's comeback victory against No. 7 Texas Tech on Oct. 18 before getting hurt again. Leavitt twice left last week's 24-16 loss to No. 22 Houston, first after taking a hard hit in the first quarter and again when he limped off the field in the fourth quarter. Leavitt was wearing a walking boot at practice Tuesday. "I just feel bad for him that he has been dinged up all year and he's been battling for our football team," Dillingham said. "It's unfortunate that it just hasn't gotten any better." Leavitt was the perfect fit for Dillingham's second season in the desert after transferring from Michigan State.

The 6-foot-2 quarterback from West Linn, Oregon, threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions last season while leading the Sun Devils to the Big 12 title and their first trip to the College Football Playoff. With Leavitt and standout receiver Jordyn Tyson returning, Arizona State opened at No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and has bounced in and out of the poll all season. The Sun Devils (5-3, 3-2 Big 12) were still in the mix to repeat as Big 12 champions, but their bid took a big hit with the loss to Houston. Leavitt has thrown for 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions this season. Tyson did not play against Houston with a hamstring injury, but could return against Iowa State (5-3, 2-3) in Saturday's rematch of last year's Big 12 title game. - AP College Football

  10/28/25 - Sam LeavittrSo/2028, Arizona State, 6-2, 205 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt will not play against Iowa State after twice leaving last week's loss to No. 22 Houston. Leavitt went out after taking a hard hit in the first quarter of the Sun Devils' 24-16 loss to the Cougars last Saturday. He returned to the game but went off limping in the fourth quarter. Leavitt was in a walking boot at Arizona State's practice Tuesday. "It's definitely something that's been lingering all year," Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham said. "It's definitely something that could definitely turn into that (long-term) for sure, just because it hasn't progressed like we hoped. He's been dealing with this for pretty much the whole year. He hasn't been at full speed, so we'll definitely reassess it during the bye and make a decision from there." Leavitt first injured his foot against Baylor on Sept. 20 and didn't play in a loss to No. 24 Utah two weeks later. He returned to lead Arizona State's comeback win over No. 13 Texas Tech on Oct. 18 before going down again. Leavitt has thrown for 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions this season after leading the Sun Devils to the College Football Playoff for the first time last year. - AP College Football

  10/18/25 - Sam LeavittrSo/2028, Arizona State, 6-2, 205 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Raleek Brown bulled in for a 1-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left and Arizona State rallied after blowing a 12-point, fourth-quarter lead to hand No. 7 Texas Tech its first loss of the season, 26-22 on Saturday. The Red Raiders (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) labored most of the afternoon without starting quarterback Behren Morton (knee), finishing with 276 total yards after averaging an FBS-best 558.8 through the first six games. Will Hammond showed his mettle after failing to move Texas Tech's offense through three quarters, orchestrating two late scoring drives. The freshman scored on a 1-yard run and, after Texas Tech's defense held, found Reggie Virgil on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Hammond put the Red Raiders up 22-19 by running it in for the 2-point conversion - after a holding call on Arizona State on the first attempt - but left too much time on the clock. The reigning Big 12 champion Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1) started the final drive from their 25 with two minutes left and quickly moved down the field.

Sam Leavitt completed 5 of 7 passes for 61 yards on the drive and benefited from a pass interference call on Texas Tech's Brice Pollack to set up Brown's TD run. The Red Raiders reached Arizona State's 28 on its final drive, but Hammond's desperation heave into the end zone was swatted down. Texas Tech followed No. 2 Miami, No. 5 Mississippi and No. 10 LSU to become the fourth top-10 team to lose this weekend. Texas Tech was without defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard, who had season-ending ankle surgery this week, and the Sun Devils took advantage by racking up 394 total yards against one of the nation's best defenses. Arizona State had a hard time finishing drives, settling for four field goals by Jesus Gomez, but came through at just the right time. Leavitt threw for 319 yards and hit Jordyn Tyson on a 2-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter after missing last week's game against Utah with a foot injury. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is expected to miss the Sun Devils' road game against Utah on Saturday with an undisclosed injury. The No. 21 Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) have won three straight games while Utah (4-1, 1-1) had a lopsided win over West Virginia last weekend. "Sam's been battling something going back to Baylor - he fought through the TCU game," Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Friday. "Sam does everything he possibly can to come back and play in football games. He's the ultimate competitor. "This week, it just didn't feel as good as we wanted it to leaving Wednesday's practice," Dillingham added. "I think this is the best thing for him and the future season." Leavitt has completed 63.1% of his passes this season for 1,039 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. The sophomore has also run for 281 yards and five touchdowns. Jeff Sims is expected to get the start against Utah. The sixth-year player completed 12 of 23 passes for 155 yards in a start against Cincinnati last season. - AP College Football

Five of its six sacks were recorded by defensive linemen, as ASU also held the Horned Frogs to just 10 yards rushing for the game, nearly 175 yards below their average entering the week.   09/27/25 - Sam LeavittrSo/2028, Arizona State, 6-2, 205 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Jesus Gomez kicked a 23-yard field goal with 1:14 left and Arizona State overcame a 17-point deficit to beat No. 24 TCU 27-24 on Friday night. The Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) were down 17-0 in the second quarter before rallying behind Sam Leavitt and Jordyn Tyson to pull out a second straight late win. "Every close of the game, it's incredible our guys find ways to get it done in the big moments," Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said. "It's a testament to the character of the guys were have on our team." Leavitt threw his second touchdown pass to Tyson, from 4 yards with 1:50 left in regulation, and Prince Dorbuh followed with a strip sack of TCU's Josh Hoover, setting up Arizona State at TCU's 15. Gomez, who missed two earlier field goals, split the uprights after the Sun Devils originally lined up to go for it on fourth-and-inches. Gomez also hit a 43-yard field goal as time expired in Arizona State's 27-24 victory over Baylor last week. Arizona State's Martell Hughes sealed it with the second interception of Hoover.

Leavitt threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-38 passing, connecting with Tyson eight times for 126 yards. Raleek Brown ran for 147 yards. "Down 17-0, things just weren't going our way," Leavitt said. "We're a really tough team and we just compete." TCU (3-1, 0-1) had its chances. The Horned Frogs let the early lead slip away, but went up 24-17 on Hoover's 1-yard sneak early in the fourth quarter and stopped Arizona State twice from inside their own 5. TCU couldn't pull it off, plagued by three turnovers, six sacks and an anemic rushing game that produced 10 yards on 25 carries. "We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot," TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. Heavy afternoon storms soaked the field and strong wind lingered well past kickoff. It did little to slow down the Horned Frogs early. TCU took advantage of a short field for Trent Battle's 13-yard touchdown run and Jeremy Payne scored on a 7-yard run. The Horned Frogs then stopped a fourth-and-2 to force a turnover on downs at Arizona State's 38, leading to a field goal that put them up 17-0. Leavitt and Tyson sparked the Sun Devils. - Arizona State/AP College Football

WEEK 4 BIG 12 CO-SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jesus Gomez, K, Arizona State,...Gomez drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired to give Arizona State a 27-24 win at Baylor. The game-winner was the first walk-off field goal on the road by an Arizona State kicker in over 60 years. Gomez's four field goals were a career high and the most by a Sun Devil since Carter Brown had four against NAU on Sept. 1, 2022.   Jesus Gomez kicked a 43-yard field goal on the game's final play to give defending Big 12 champion Arizona State a 27-24 win over Baylor on Saturday night in the conference opener for both teams. It was the fourth field goal of the game for Gomez, a left-footed senior transfer from Eastern Michigan. He also made kicks of 31, 21 and 33 yards, and is 9-of-10 for the Sun Devils (3-1, 1-0 Big 12). Sam Leavitt completed 22 of 32 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a score for Arizona State. Baylor (2-2, 0-1) tied the game 24-24 with 1:52 left on Sawyer Robertson's 33-yard TD strike to Ole Miss transfer Michael Trigg, whose 1-yard catch and stretch for a touchdown had put the Bears up 17-16 with 9:02 left.

The Sun Devils responded to Trigg's second TD with an 11-play scoring drive, and Gomez booted the go-ahead kick right down the middle as time expired. Arizona State moved the ball into Baylor territory on its game-winning drive after a personal foul penalty followed a 3-yard completion from Leavitt to preseason All-America receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson caught the third-down pass in stride and slid to the ground just before Bears defensive back DJ Coleman ran into him. Robertson was 25 of 39 passing for 251 yards and three TDs. Bryson Washington ran 17 times for 111 yards for Baylor. - Arizona State/AP College Football
