The favorite to replace Zac Thomas at quarterback is Chase Brice, formerly of Clemson and Duke. Brice looks to shake off a year with the Blue Devils that featured frequent turnovers, and start anew with a team that gives him talent to work with at every offensive position. "Will he be a starter? Time will tell," Clark said at the Sun Belt's media day. "Right now going into camp he will be our starter." To add more depth to the room and provide push, Jacob Huesman has returned for a sixth year with the program. - Winston-Salem Journal

Between an ACL tear near the end of the 2019 season and opting out in 2020, Corey Sutton hasn't played for App State in almost two years. Healthy and ready, the super-senior wide receiver will bring a lethal component back to the field. Sutton is fifth in App State history with 17 receiving touchdowns, a feat he has accomplished in just 22 games. Eight touchdown receptions this season would tie him for second with Bob Agle (who played from 1965 to 1968) at 25. Brian Quick holds the all-time career record with 31. - Winston-Salem Journal

Appalachian State's football team has been selected as the co-favorite to win its division in the Sun Belt Conference. Nine Mountaineers are predicted to land places on the All-Sun Belt team: six on the first team and three on the second team. App State and Coastal Carolina were picked as the likely East Division winners, earning 44 points each in voting by the 10 head coaches and a journalist who covers each of the schools. The Chanticleers garnered six first-place votes, while the Mountaineers had four. Coastal Carolina, which went 11-1 in 2020 and finished at No. 12 in the final College Football Playoff rankings, defeated App State 34-23 last season. The teams will meet in Boone on Oct. 20. - Winston-Salem Journal

Madison Cone, an East Forsyth graduate and former defensive back at the University of Wisconsin, will finish his college football career closer to home. Cone announced on Twitter that he would join Appalachian State as a grad transfer on Tuesday. The 5-foot-9 safety played in 33 career games for the Badgers, spanning from the 2017 season to the 2020 season. He graduated in December. In February, Cone announced that he would join Buffalo as a grad transfer. Since then, the Bulls have gone through a coaching change. Former head coach Lance Leipold was hired at Kansas, replaced by former Michigan defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist. Cone becomes the fourth graduate transfer brought in by the Mountaineers. Quarterback Chase Brice (Duke), running back Jahmir Smith (Notre Dame) and safety Stu Head (Stanford) chose to join the App State program since the 2020 season ended. - Winston-Salem Journal

On May 21, Appalachian State University announced its campus would return to pre-pandemic operations for the fall 2021 semester, with safety precautions in place. That announcement followed North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper's lifting of the state's capacity and gathering limits, social distancing requirements and most face covering mandates. App State will continue to follow all state and federal orders and directives of The University of North Carolina System, and will adhere to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local public health in order to ensure the safest possible on-campus environment. The university will continue to set the standard for excellence with safety measures and cleaning procedures. - High County Press

Eastern Michigan University Head Football Coach Chris Creighton continued to add to his roster for the upcoming 2021 campaign, as the Eagles added a pair of "Power 5" transfers to the program today, May 19. Defensive back Jarrett Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Paramus Catholic-Rutgers) and wide receiver I'Shawn Stewart (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Bolingbrook-Oregon State) join 25 others that EMU has previously signed to the roster.

Paul, who attended Rutgers University, was ranked as a three-star recruit by 247Sports and the No. 24 overall recruit in New Jersey by Rivals.com. He notched 45 tackles (23 solo, 22 assist) in 23 career games for the Scarlet Knights before transferring. In 2019, Paul tied for the team lead with 27 tackles against the pass. He collected a season-high 10 tackles versus Boston College (Sept. 21) and led the team with eight stops and broke up a pass at No. 20 Michigan (Sept. 28). A transfer from Oregon State University, Stewart was rated amongst the top 30 prospects in the state of Illinois by 247Sports out of high school. In three seasons with the Beavers, he appeared in two games during the 2019 campaign, making his collegiate debut against Cal Poly (Sept. 14) and then taking the field against Stanford (Sept. 28). - Ann Arbor News

In his short amount of time in Boone, Chase Brice has noticed how fervent Appalachian State fans can be. But he's gone fairly unrecognized, the new Mountaineers quarterback said, with the only tell coming from the program gear he wears around town. "I blend in pretty good, but I am a little bit bigger," Brice said. "Some people think I'm a baseball player or something like that. I get that a lot." He's also realized just how much fun he's having this spring, acclimating himself to his second program in two seasons. Brice, formerly at Clemson and, most recently, Duke in 2020, compared the joy he's experienced now to the way he felt ahead of the 2018 season, his first where he could actually see playing time in a college game. "That was kind of a stepping stone for me to get better," Brice said. "And when that spring came around and I was a redshirt freshman, I was really excited for football. I'd say I'm at that point. It's pretty equal. "I know I'm going to make an impact on the field and have an opportunity. I'm really excited about that." - Winston-Salem Journal

When Appalachian State needed an extra tight end during the 2017 football season, the West Forsyth grad shifted off the defensive line to offense. When the Mountaineers wanted to add depth on the O-line the next season, Hunter moved inward. He ended up establishing himself as a three-year starter at right guard, becoming an All-Sun Belt first-teamer at that in the 2020 season. Back for the extra year of eligibility given by the NCAA, Hunter has made one more move. This time, it's to the left one spot. He'll be tasked with snapping duties, as well trying to take over for four-year starter Noah Hannon at center. "We've got a lot of work to do, and everybody in here knows it,' Hunter said. "I've got a lot of work to do myself, and I try to come here every day with a lot of energy so that I can learn that center position and get better every single day because I mean, I've got a lot to learn. "I feel like I'm playing well right now, but I want to be great." - Winston-Salem Journal

Serving as one of three options out of the backfield, Peoples used the end of the season to surge ahead and become a 1,100-yard rusher. He ran for 317 of those yards in the Myrtle Beach Bowl, a five-touchdown performance that was an exclamation point to end a long and difficult season. Peoples will be part of a talented running back group once again, which speedster Nate Noel and adds transfer Jahmir Smith from Notre Dame. Daetrich Harrington is also on the mend from an injury that forced him out of the last six games of last season. - Winston-Salem Journal

Starting with a Thursday night game against East Carolina to kick off the college football season in North Carolina, App State will play an exciting 2021 fall schedule in head coach Shawn Clark's second full season at the helm. The Mountaineers, moving forward from a 9-3 campaign and the program's sixth straight bowl win in as many tries, will kick off the fall with back-to-back games in NFL stadiums. A Sept. 2 neutral-site tilt against ECU will be held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, followed by a Sept. 11 road game at Miami, played at Hard Rock Stadium. Kidd Brewer Stadium will host six games this fall, starting with nonconference matchups against Elon (Sept. 18) and Marshall (Sept. 25). The season ticket renewal deadline is April 30, after which App State plans to sell new season tickets. - High County Press

UW retained a veteran player in Davis on Monday, but lost another in senior safety Madison Cone. Cone has entered the NCAA transfer portal, the fourth Badger to do so this season and the second safety after Dante Caputo did the same in mid-January. Cone played in 35 games on defense and special teams, making two starts. He tallied 27 total tackles and two interceptions in his time as a Badger. - Wisconsin State Journal

Former Notre Dame running back Jahmir Smith will continue his playing career in his home state of North Carolina. On Monday, Smith announced he committed to Appalachian State as a graduate transfer. Smith stepped away from Notre Dame's football program in October and cited needing to improve his mental health as a reason. Smith later entered the NCAA's transfer portal. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Smith played in Notre Dame's 2020 season opener against Duke, but he did not play again during his junior season. Smith rushed five times for 15 yards as a backup running back against Duke. Smith, who joined the Irish as a three-star recruit out of Sanford (N.C.) Lee County in the 2018 class, finished his Notre Dame career with 53 carries for 223 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games played. - South Bend Tribune

App State has added graduate transfer and former ACC quarterback Chase Brice, who is enrolled in classes with Tuesday's start to the spring semester. To this point in his college career, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Brice has played in 36 FBS games, taken more than 1,100 snaps, thrown for nearly 3,200 yards and produced 19 touchdown passes. He led a fourth-quarter comeback during Clemson's national championship season in 2018 and started every game for fellow ACC program Duke in 2020. A native of Grayson, Ga., Brice spent three seasons as a member of Clemson's football program, graduated from Clemson in May 2020 and threw for 2,170 yards while passing for 10 touchdowns in 11 starts at Duke as a master's student during the 2020 season. - High County Press

Appalachian State completed a 9-3 season with a 56-28 win over North Texas State in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on Monday. Starting quarterback Zac Thomas, who threw for 20 touchdowns with 11 interceptions this season while completing 63.7% of his passes, declared for the NFL draft on Tuesday. That leaves the Mountaineers in need of an experienced quarterback next season. Brice intends to take advantage of that opportunity. - Herald Sun

It didn't take long for Appalachian State to find its quarterback for 2021. A day after three-year starter Zac Thomas officially announced he would not use his extra eligibility, the Mountaineers secured the commitment of grad transfer Chase Brice, who announced the decision on Twitter. Brice has played for two ACC programs, spending his first two seasons at Clemson before becoming the starting quarterback at Duke this season.

The addition of Brice is a needed bridge from Thomas, who threw for at least 20 touchdowns and 2,000 yards a season under three different playcallers, and the future of the position. The Mountaineers signed two quarterbacks in the 2021 recruiting class: DC Tabscott and Andre Goodman. They also signed two in the last class as well with Navy Shuler and David Baldwin-Griffin, the latter of whom opted out this season and is not longer part of the program. - Winston-Salem Journal
