Camerun Peoples ran for a bowl-record 319 yards and tied a record with five rushing touchdowns as Appalachian State beat North Texas 56-28 Monday in the Myrtle Beach Bowl to start college football's pandemic-affected bowl season. Peoples, a sophomore, surpassed the 307 yards rushing of Georgia Tech's PJ Daniels in the 2004 Humanitarian Bowl. Peoples also became the seventh player to run for that many scores in a bowl game, a list that includes Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders and Toledo's Kareem Hunt, as the Mountaineers (9-3) remained perfect in bowls since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. North Texas (4-6) of Conference USA fell behind 28-7 and had no answer for Peoples or the App State rushing game, which finished with 508 yards. It was a powerful performance by App State and a somewhat normal start to a bowl schedule with few guarantees about how things will play out. Most years, the Mean Green, who came in with a losing record, would've had their lockers cleaned out until spring practice. But this isn't most years. - AP College Football

DEC 14 SUN BELT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jalen Virgil, App State, (#11, Sr, WR - Lawrenceville, Ga.),...Jalen Virgil's 100-yard kickoff return gave App State its first lead of the game at 24-20 in the fourth quarter and helped lift the Mountaineers to a 34-26 road win at Georgia Southern. Virgil's first career touchdown return was the third 100-yard return in school history (Darrynton Evans in 2018 and Keith Nash in 1968). After fielding the kickoff over his head, Virgil sprinted left and weaved his way through a couple of defenders, untouched, before using his sprinter's speed to streak down the left sideline to the end zone. Virgil finished the game with 171 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns (one receiving). - Sun Belt Football

Nebraska had to deal with an apparent injury before the game even started. Redshirt freshman Myles Farmer went down with what looked like a lower right leg injury. He was carted off to a waiting ambulance. Trainers put an air cast around Farmer's leg below his knee and a staffer was putting pressure on the area around his right ankle as he was transported toward the ambulance. Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was down with Farmer, holding his hand while the trainers put the cast on and prepared to load him into the cart. - Lincoln Journal Star

Zac Thomas passed for 279 yards and matched his career high with four touchdown passes as Appalachian State defeated Troy 47-10 on Saturday, rebounding from a loss at No. 16 Coastal Carolina. The win keeps Appalachian State in second place behind unbeaten Coastal Carolina, which clinched the Sun Belt Conference Eastern Division on Saturday.

Thomas fired a 15-yard scoring pass to Malik Williams, and Steven Jones picked off a Gunnar Watson pass on the next play from scrimmage, returning it 34 yards for a pick-six. Thomas was 22-for-29 passing and threw four touchdowns for the fourth time, Peoples gained 95 yards on 10 carries and Williams had seven receptions for a career-high 113 yards.
