  08/20/21 - Tre Bugg IIIrSr/2022, Air Force, 5-11, 189 (DS#86 CB) + More +

Milton Bugg III seized the rare opportunity in life to press pause, take a step back, and hone in on exactly what he needed to improve upon. The results will be seen in Falcon Stadium this fall. Bugg - known as Tre' to all in his orbit - was among a handful of Air Force defenders with starting experience who opted for a turnback during the 2020 season when it became an option for the cadet wing. He returned home to Arizona but took with him the knowledge gained as a two-year starter that allowed him to take a surgical approach to the work he put in on his own.

"I worked out a lot," Bugg said. "Definitely studied a lot of film. Even though I wasn't playing, I still wanted to keep my mind sharp." The heaviest Bugg weighed during the 2019 season was 163 pounds. Now he's up to 183. "I think the thing is, he is stronger," coach Troy Calhoun said. "Goodness gracious. He took it to heart. There's always guys who say I'm always going to work on my game - on the strengths of my game. I think a real competitor is somebody who wants to work on the areas that aren't right now advantages. Tre's done that. He's added more strength and more power. The other part, just what he takes to heart when it comes to being a good tackler." - Colorado Springs Gazette

  08/17/21 - Lakota WillisrSr/2022, Air Force, 6-3, 238 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Lakota Wills hopes focusing on prehab will alleviate his need for rehab. The Air Force outside linebacker goes to the trainer's room before practice for "exercises you wouldn't normally do" to limber and strengthen joints and optimize his health. He has put an emphasis on "stress loading and doing the right things to get out to practice." Even last year, when he was away for the fall semester on a turnback, he resisted the urge for Domino's pizzas when he was working as a delivery driver for the restaurant in his native Washington. If there's a step Wills can take to stay on the field, he's going to explore it. "No one, I mean no one, since I've been here has worked harder than Lakota," said coach Troy Calhoun, who is entering his 15th season with the Falcons.

"Yet more than anything else, one of the most rewarding things, truly, I've seen since I've been in coaching is just seeing the growth he's made as a young man. He has a lot of leadership aptitude. I think for himself, he's starting to discover that more and more as time passes, too." Calhoun said he's been singing those same praises to NFL scouts, who have been asking about the 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior. "It's definitely still a goal for me," Wills said of the NFL. Wills, a starter since his second game in his freshman year, has numbers to tell his story, too. He has played in 28 games, making 104 tackles with 16.5 coming for loss (totaling 57 yards) and 6.5 sacks. - Colorado Springs Gazette

  05/24/21 - Donald Hammond IIISr/2021, Air Force, 6-0, 228 (DS#24 QB) + More +

Former Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III flew to Green Bay on Sunday and will try out with the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday, a source told The Gazette. Hammond, who did not sign with a team after going undrafted last month, had drawn at least niche interest prior to the draft from experts who liked the arm strength and abilities possessed by the 6-foot-1, 228-pound Georgia native. At Air Force, Hammond set a program record in passing efficiency (164.09) and average yards per completion (20.6). He led the team to a 11-2 record and No. 21 national ranking in his lone season as full-time starter. An academic violation prior to his senior year led to a drop in cadet status and caused Hammond to miss the season. He then separated from the academy under an agreement that will likely require him to pay back the cost of his education. - Colorado Springs Gazette

Nolan Laufenberg is staying in Colorado. The Castle Rock native and Air Force graduate is signing with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent, The Gazette confirmed. Laufenberg attended Castle View High School before joining the academy where he started three seasons at left guard. He was named a second-team preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, becoming the first Falcon to do so since 1992. He was also a selection to the Mountain West's first team in 2019 and 2020. - Colorado Springs Gazette

  05/03/21 - Parker FergusonSr/2021, Air Force, 6-4, 306 (DS#34 OG) + More +

Air Force left tackle Parker Ferguson signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets on Saturday evening. Ferguson, a three-year starter for the Falcons from Greenwood, Ind., participated in the Hula Bowl in January following a first-team All-Mountain West senior season. At Air Force's pro day in March, Ferguson measured 6-foot-3.6, 306 pounds and posted a 31-inch vertical leap and ran a 5.19 40-yard dash. He also performed 24 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press. Ferguson becomes the second former Falcon with the Jets, joining cornerback Zane Lewis, who spent the 2020 season on the practice squad. Former Air Force assistant coach Jake Moreland is on the Jets staff as the assistant offensive line coach and former Falcons assistant Chip Vaughn coaches the Jets defensive secondary. - Colorado Springs Gazette

  04/22/21 - Kyle PattersonSr/2023, Air Force, 6-5, 260 (DS#30 TE) + More +

Air Force football is proceeding with a plan to fully open Falcon Stadium to fans this fall, packing a place that spent the 2020 season empty except for cadets. The academy announced on Twitter that the 2021 season includes "plans for full capacity." "We will continue to monitor state and local health guidelines as we will coordinate with public health to ensure a safe fan experience for all," athletic director Nathan Pine in a statement on social media. The Falcons will host six games - Lafayette (Sept. 4), Utah State (Sept. 18), Florida Atlantic (Sept. 25), Wyoming (Oct. 9), San Diego State (Oct. 23) and UNLV (Nov. 27). The team moved its scheduled Nov. 6 home game against Army to Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, as part of the two-year Commander's Classic. - Colorado Springs

  04/10/21 - Jordan JacksonrSr/2022, Air Force, 6-5, 294 (DS#27 DT) + More +

Jordan Jackson thought he'd spend this past fall hauling down quarterbacks. Instead, he spent the time hauling meals around Jacksonville, Fla. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Air Force defensive end gave an in-house interview with FalconVision director Brian Jerman that was released by the academy Wednesday afternoon. It was the first public interview conducted with one of the three dozen or so Air Force players who took turnbacks and missed the 2020 season. Jackson discussed his time away from the academy that he spent rehabbing from an injury, spending time with family and delivering food as an Uber Eats driver.

"Everything happens for a reason, I feel like," Jackson said. "Of course it was kind of tough, going home, not expecting there to be a season, and there ended up being a season." The Mountain West had announced in August 2020 that it was moving the football season to the spring because of the coronavirus. About a month later it reversed that decision and forged ahead with a shortened season. During that interim period, around 40 Air Force football players decided to utilize an offer then-superintendent Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria offered to all cadets to utilize the turnback program because of the pandemic. Turnbacks allow cadets to separate for a period of time - in this case a semester - with the missed time tacked onto the end of their time at the academy. For those, like Jackson, who were initially scheduled to graduate next month, they will instead graduate in December 2021 and be able to play during the 2021 season. - Colorado Springs Gazette

  02/16/21 - Donald Hammond IIISr/2021, Air Force, 6-0, 228 (DS#24 QB) + More +

Quarterback Donald Hammond III is no longer at the Air Force Academy and hopes to take his next snaps in the NFL. Hammond, a standout for the Falcons as a sophomore and junior during the 2018-19 seasons, provided the updates on Twitter on Monday. The announcement followed a turbulent time for Hammond. In late July, the academy responded to an inquiry from The Gazette to say that Hammond was no longer a cadet in good standing. The drop in standing kept him from playing during his senior season, which was truncated to six games instead of 12 because of COVID-19. In October, Hammond placed his name in the transfer portal to "see where everything goes from here," he told The Gazette at the time. - Colorado Springs Gazette

Air Force senior Parker Ferguson has been selected to play in the Hula Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii, January 31 in Aloha Stadium. Ferguson is the first Air Force offensive lineman selected for the game since Ross Weaver in 2005. This season marks the second straight the Falcons have had a player selected for the all-star game, as Mosese Fifita played in last year's game. Ferguson was a first-team all-Mountain West selection this season. He was also named to the Outland Trophy Watch List while helping to anchor an offensive line that earned mid-season watch list honors for the Joe Moore Award, given annual to the nation's best offensive line. - Air Force Football
