Air Force was picked second in the Mountain Division in the preseason poll, released today by the league office during the 2022 Mountain West Football Media Day at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. The Falcons received 10 first-place votes and had 136 points overall. Air Force returns 14 starters from last season, including six on offense and five on defense. Senior fullback Brad Roberts, the conference's top returning rusher in 2022, rushed for 1,352 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago. Senior quarterback Haaziq Daniels also returns after finishing second on the team in rushing with 731 yards, while hitting 52-104 passes for 1,184 yards and seven touchdowns. He was named most valuable player in Air Force's 31-28 First Responder Bowl victory over Louisville, hitting 9-10 passes for a career-best 252 yards and two touchdowns. - Air Force Football

Air Force's football rivalries with Colorado State and Wyoming will remain intact under future Mountain West schedules in the post-division era. The conference announced opponents for the 2023-2025 seasons on Thursday, revealing what the schedule structure will be when the league scraps the division format following the 2022 season. For the Falcons, this will mean playing the Rams and Cowboys annually and shuffling the deck among the other nine teams.

In the three-year window revealed, the Falcons play every other team twice, once each at home and on the road. This replaces the division format, which saw Air Force face its Mountain Division opponents (Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming) each season and play teams from the other side in a two-years-on, two-years-off cycle. - Colorado Springs Gazette

Air Force opens the 2022 season vs. Northern Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Falcon Stadium and the kickoff time has been set for 11 a.m. MT. Television coverage is to be announced, but the kickoff time will not be affected. The 2022 home schedule features seven home games and six kickoff times are set. The Falcons host Colorado, Sept. 10, at 1:30 p.m., followed by Nevada on Friday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. Navy comes to Falcon Stadium to begin the race for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. Boise State visits the Academy, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. and New Mexico, Nov. 12, at 1:30 p.m. The Falcons close out the season at home vs. Colorado State, Nov. 19. Air Force is losing an explosive playmaker on offense, as Micah Davis announced Friday that he's leaving. Davis wrote on social media that he "is leaving the academy and entering the transfer portal due to personal issues." Cadets at the academy are allowed to exit without penalty prior to the start of their junior year. Once they begin classes as a junior they are committed to graduating and serving on active duty. As a sophomore last year Davis amassed 581 total yards from scrimmage on just 57 attempts (47 rushes and 10 receptions).

He scored six touchdowns and racked up more than 100 yards from scrimmage in three of Air Force's first four games before injuries limited his attempts. He appeared in eight games. Davis came to Air Force with a ballyhooed background, having played with future NFL quarterback Justin Fields in high school in Kennesaw, Ga. Davis caught 38 passes and 10 touchdowns from Fields. He also had a football pedigree, as his father, Dexter, played six seasons as a cornerback in the NFL after starring at Clemson. - Colorado Springs Gazette

An injury cut TE Kyle Patterson's 2021 season short, but he's arguably the best tight end in the MWC. Coming out of high school, he turned down offers from Alabama and four Pac-12 schools to play for the Falcons. He had 12 catches for 205 yards and two TDs in five games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, becoming the first tight end to lead the team in receiving since 2002. - Daily Camera

Air Force changed its strategy Tuesday for the First Responder Bowl, taking inspiration from its name and trying out its passing game. It worked. Haaziq Daniels threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to give Air Force a 31-28 win over Louisville. Daniels completed 9 of 10 passes for a season-high 252 yards, leading a triple-option offense that came into the game averaging an FBS-best 340.8 rushing yards and the second-fewest passing yards at 82.5 per game.

The Falcons (10-3) didn't throw a pass in their final game of the regular season, a 48-14 win over UNLV, and took a streak of 94 straight rushes from scrimmage into their second possession Tuesday. "I figured we'd (pass) more then we did in the last game," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun joked. "I just think sometimes you get in games, you make adjustments." Louisville coach Scott Satterfield lamented his shorthanded secondary getting beat on man-to-man coverage. The Cardinals (6-7) were missing defensive back Kenderick Duncan (injured) and Greedy Vance, who is transferring to Florida State. "Anytime you play a team like this, they're going to take a shot," Satterfield said. "They connect - they're going to come back to it again." Senior Brandon Lewis had touchdown catches of 64 and 61 yards for the Falcons, finishing with five receptions for a career-high 172 yards.
