  10/01/22 - Haaziq DanielsrSr/2023, Air Force, 6-0, 209 (DS#47 QB) + More +

Haaziq Daniels and the Air Force ground game finally got on track late to help the Falcons hold off Navy 13-10 on Saturday. The option quarterback clinched the win for the Falcons (4-1) with an 18-yard scamper on third-and-6 in Navy territory, allowing them to run out the clock. This was soon after Matthew Dapore connected on a 22-yard field goal with 4:14 left to give Air Force the lead. Daniels had 65 yards rushing to go with 156 through the air, including a 67-yard touchdown pass to David Cormier on the third play of the game. The Falcons gained around 90 of their 200 yards rushing over the final two drives. Tai Lavatai tied the game at 10-apiece with 10:50 with a 5-yard run on third-and-goal. Lavatai drifted back to pass but when the middle opened up, he cruised into the end zone. Navy (1-3) entered as a two-touchdown underdog.

After Dapore's field goal, Navy went three-and-out. The Midshipmen finished 4-of-13 on third downs for the game. The Falcons raced out to a quick 10-0 and rode their defense to a victory in the first leg of the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy. The annual award goes to the round-robin winner between the service academies. Navy hasn't won at Air Force since an overtime win on Oct. 6, 2012. The Midshipmen missed a 33-yard field goal early in the third quarter. Brad Roberts finished with 108 yards rushing to move into second place on the program's all-time rushing list among fullbacks. He now has 2,386 career yards. Leading the fullback list is John Kershner, who had 2,726 yards from 1980-83. - Air Force/AP College Football

Fullback Brad Roberts ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns to help Air Force overcome several miscues, including a snap over the punter's head, in a 41-10 win over Colorado on a dreary Saturday. Hosting the Buffaloes for the first time since 1974, the Falcons built a 20-0 lead. Air Force entered the nationally televised game as a 17 1/2-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, but couldn't shake Colorado until late in the third quarter, when they scored 21 straight points. "It's an awesome feeling (to beat Colorado)," said Roberts, who is from a Denver suburb and went to a few Buffaloes games growing up. "We played a really good game and our defense really stepped up to the plate." Air Force (2-0) and Colorado (0-2) combined for six turnovers in the rainy conditions, including each team fumbling at the goal line while going in for a score.

The Buffaloes' goal-line fumble occurred in the third and right after Air Force set them up in good field position after a snap sailed well over the head of punter Carson Bay. Alex Fontenot was trying to wiggle into the end zone when the ball was ripped away. It would have made it a one-score game. Falcons quarterback Haaziq Daniels scored from a yard out late in the third to wrap up a second straight win over the Buffaloes. Air Force won in Boulder in 2019. - Air Force/AP College Football

Haaziq Daniels put the air in Air Force on his first pass attempt of the season. The Falcons, whose triple-option offense has had a run-pass ratio of nearly 90-10 the past two seasons, scored their first touchdown in a 48-17 win over Northern Iowa on Daniels' 80-yard pass to Dane Kinamon. Air Force faced third-and-12 from its 20 when Daniels scrambled to his left and threw to Kinamon, who had his defender beat by 5 yards and caught the ball in stride. It was Air Force's longest pass since Daniels' school-record 92-yarder against Colorado State last year. - AP College Football

  08/15/22 - Vince SanfordrSr/2023, Air Force, 6-1, 225 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

If Vince Sanford had been told in high school that he would be showered with accolades entering his final season as a college football player, maybe the biggest surprise would have been the position he'd be playing to attract the praise. "I would have guessed receiver, safety," the Air Force senior said. "Something like that." New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Dai'Jean Dixon recaps his performance against the Houston Texans in their preseason opener. "Probably not," he conceded. Sanford registered 9.5 sacks in a breakout junior season, throwing opposing quarterbacks for a loss of 91 yards - second only in Falcons history to Chad Hennings' 182 yards during his Outland Trophy winning season in 1987. Sanford made 17 total tackles for loss, accounting for 118 yards - second most in the Mountain West.

As a result, Sanford enters 2022 as a preseason All-Mountain West selection and on watch-lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy, both of which honor the top defensive player in the nation. So how did this 6-foot-1, 225-pound former basketball player who shattered every key receiving record at his Ohio high school and entered the Air Force prep school as a safety become a disruptive force at and behind the line of scrimmage? It started with a hunch from an assistant coach. "I really credit Alex Means for just the way he took off last year," coach Troy Calhoun said. "Alex just kept saying as a pass rusher you have a knack for being able to move your hips. Even though you may feel like your torso is in place, you've got to get your hips moving a little bit in front of the rest of your body." - Colorado Springs Gazette
