James Madison Football   JC Evans threw for a touchdown and ran for a key first down late in the fourth quarter to help James Madison begin the coach Billy Napier era with a 20-13 victory over in-state foe Liberty on Saturday. James Madison forced Liberty into a fourth-and-2 decision with 2:16 left in the fourth quarter before breaking up a pass to the outside. Evans rushed for 23 yards on the next play and the Dukes were able to run out the clock on three more run plays in front of 25,035 fans.

Evans was 7-of-9 passing for 61 yards and he ran it nine times for 69 yards for JMU, which improved to 14-6 in the series to earn the Battle of the Blue Ridge trophy. Evans found Corey Scott for a 5-yard touchdown late in the first half for a 17-3 lead. Eleven of the previous 20 games between the two schools have been decided by one score. Deshawn Purdie threw for 230 yards and a touchdown for Liberty, which was making its first trip to Harrisonburg since the 2014 season. The Dukes are coming off a 12-2 season, which ended with the program's first Sun Belt Conference title and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. - James Madison/AP College Football

West Virginia Football   Cam Cook rushed for 142 yards and two short touchdowns, Michael Hawkins Jr. threw for one score and passed for another TD, and West Virginia held on for a 31-24 win over Coastal Carolina in the teams' season opener Saturday. On a day in which West Virginia retired the No. 5 jersey of record-setting quarterback Pat White, the Mountaineers dominated the game early but looked disheveled on both sides of the ball for much of the second half. Coastal Carolina's Nico Cavanillas Alti kicked a 32-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to cap the Chanticleers' rally from a 24-0 deficit. But the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds and West Virginia survived. With 88 new players on the roster, it's going to take some time for West Virginia to work the kinks out, especially on defense. At least they're set with two marquee positions on offense. Cook ran 72 yards up the left sideline on the first play from scrimmage to set up his 3-yard TD run. The transfer from Jacksonville State, who led the nation with 1,659 rushing yards last season, went over 100 yards early in the second quarter.

Hawkins, a transfer from Oklahoma, had a stellar debut on the ground with 103 yards on 20 carries. Hawkins led scoring drives on three of West Virginia's first four possessions. West Virginia had 336 total yards in the first half and raced to a 24-0 lead. But the Mountaineers punted on their first four possessions of the second half and were limited to 77 yards after halftime. Hawkins had an 11-yard TD run late in the game after a Coastal Carolina punt went out of bounds at its 35-yard line. Hawkins also threw a 49-yard scoring toss in the first quarter to Armoni Weaver-Bomar. Hawkins' only hiccup came when he fumbled while reaching for the pylon and the ball went through the end zone for a touchback early in the second quarter. Hawkins finished 11-of-14 passing for 132 yards. West Virginia's defense surrendered just five first downs in the first half, then looked porous after halftime. Redshirt freshman quarterback Deuce Bailey threw three touchdown passes for Coastal Carolina, which outgained West Virginia 425-413. - West Virginia/AP College Football

Tarleton State Football   Tylan Hines rushed for 250 yards, including non-scoring runs of 83 and 72 yards, and Tarleton State of the FCS defeated Bowling Green 20-13 on Saturday. With Bowling Green driving for a potential tying or go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Tarleton's Roddrick Roberts and Jadan Aubert combined to stop Austyn Dendy on a fourth-and-1 play at the 8-yard line. Hines then bolted 83 yards on the next play from scrimmage. But three plays later, Hines lost a fumble near the goal line with 1:35 remaining. Bowling Green's final drive ended at the Texans' 8-yard line on the last play of the game. Tarleton State led 10-0 midway through the second quarter and stretched it to 17-0 on Kaden Anderson's 7-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Willis. It capped a 99-yard drive that took only six plays, beginning with a 72-yard run by Hines. Bowling Green then bounced back with a six-play 69-yard drive capped by Dendy's 3-yard touchdown run, making the halftime score 17-7.

Anderson completed 16-of-24 passes for 206 yards with two touchdowns for the Texans (2-0). Jay Kastentin went 24 for 30 for 283 yards for the Falcons (0-1). Jeremiah Scoby had 10 catches for 103 yards. The Texans are ranked No. 5 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 and are coming off a quarterfinal appearance in the 2025 FCS playoffs. They have won their past two games against FBS opponents, having defeated Army 30-27 in two overtimes last season. The Falcons, in coach Eddie George's second year, have 55 new players on their roster. - Tarleton State/AP College Football

Syracuse Football   Steve Angeli passed for three touchdowns in his first game action following a season-ending injury nearly a year ago, freshman Shavane Anderson ran for three more, and Syracuse routed New Hampshire 66-3 Saturday in the Orange's season opener. Angeli, who suffered a torn Achilles in Syracuse's fourth game last season, was sharp in his return. He completed 20 of 29 passes for 263 yards and touchdown strikes of 19 and 18 yards to Umari Hatcher and 27 yards to David Clement. The quarterback threw a scare into the Orange faithful when he appeared to injure his right knee midway through the second quarter, but he ran off the field and missed just one play. Syracuse came out sluggish but then scored on six consecutive drives. The Orange amassed nearly 500 yards of total offense to 150 for New Hampshire (0-2).

Anderson ran for 102 yards in his Syracuse debut. Tylik Hill ran for 90 more and a 2-yard score. Ten Syracuse players caught passes, led by Hatcher who had eight for 147 yards. The Orange led 41-0 at the break. New Hampshire's Brooks Bentley played just the first half and finished 11 of 18 passing for 75 yards and one interception. The Syracuse defense shut down the ground game, holding the Wildcats to 51 yards, and just 99 through the air. Running back Myles Thomason had seven receptions for 53 yards out of the backfield. One concern for the Orange: penalties. Syracuse was flagged 12 times for 130 yards. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Alabama Football   Keelon Russell accounted for 335 yards and a touchdown, and No. 13 Alabama opened the season with a 48-10 victory over East Carolina on Saturday. Russell, a sophomore making his first career start after beating out Austin Mack during training camp, ran for 86 yards and a score. He also threw for 249 yards, including 130 of those to Ryan Coleman-Williams. Russell directed five consecutive scoring drives to start the game, and Alabama (1-0) finished with 480 yards and 27 first downs.

The Crimson Tide, who ranked 15th in the Southeastern Conference in rushing last season, totaled 227 yards on the ground. East Carolina (0-1) managed just 162 yards and five first downs. The Pirates were 0 for 9 on third down and gained 2 yards on 22 carries. Mitch Griffis completed 10 of 16 passes for 137 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Russell made a few mistakes, including a fumble in the third quarter. But he ended up with more positives than negatives, including connecting with Coleman-Williams for a 58-yard gain. - Alabama/AP College Football

Connecticut Football   Kalieb Osborne threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to lead Connecticut to a 56-7 season-opening victory over FCS-member Lafayette on Saturday under first-year head coach Jason Candle. Osborne found Javon Brown over the middle for a 24-yard touchdown on UConn's first possession, and added an 18-yard connection with Kenji Christian midway through the first quarter. Osborne's 9-yard keeper made it 21-0 with 1:43 left in the first. The Huskies added 14 points in each of the next two quarters for a 49-0 lead.

Osborne was 19-of-26 passing for 265 yards with an interception. He carried it eight times for 90 yards. Trey Cornist, Kenji Christian and Cyncir Bowers each had 40-plus yards rushing and a touchdown for UConn, which improved to 15-9 in season-openers since its move to FBS. Javon Brown caught six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Lafayette, which was looking for its first win over an FBS opponent since topping Rutgers in 1971, was outgained 671-209. The Leopards got on the board with 44 seconds left in the fourth after a 75-yard drive. The Leopards played Georgetown for 30 minutes last weekend before Patriot League officials declared the game a no-contest due to the weather. In addition to a new coaching staff, UConn added 87 players to a program that returned only one starter: offensive lineman Ty Chan. - Connecticut/AP College Football

Nebraska Football   Anthony Colandrea passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth, Jamal Rule ran for 122 yards and scored three times, and Nebraska pulled away from Ohio in the fourth quarter in a 49-21 victory on Saturday. Colandrea, the UNLV transfer making his first start for the Cornhuskers, led five straight touchdown drives to turn a close game into a blowout. Rule became the first Nebraska freshman running back to rush for 100 yards in an opener since 2004, ending his day with an 11-yard touchdown run.

Nebraska got all it could handle for three quarters from a Bobcats team looking to get the Mid-American Conference another Big Ten pelt two days after UMass knocked off Rutgers. Ohio, which came away with points on its first three possessions, was within a missed field goal of taking the lead in the third quarter and within seven points early in the fourth after Nick Poulos' 1-yard run and 2-point conversion. Colandrea, who fumbled and threw an interception in a 17-10 Frisco Bowl loss to Ohio when he played for UNLV last season, led two long touchdown drives to put Nebraska up 14-13 at halftime. Colandrea scored from 13 yards and Nelson from 29 to make it 28-13, and after the Bobcats got within a touchdown, Mekhi Nelson caught a short pass and split four defenders on his way to a 51-yard TD. - Nebraska/AP College Football

Army Football   Zach Mundell and Cale Hellums ran for two touchdowns apiece, and Army cruised to a 59-3 win over Bryant in the Black Knights' season opener on Saturday. Army rushed for 569 yards with 16 Black Knights getting carries. Mundell rushed for 105 yards on four carries, including a 66-yarder after taking a pitch and racing down the left sideline for a 38-3 lead in the third quarter. The touchdowns were the first of the senior slot back's Army career. Hellums, who had 18 rushing touchdowns last season, ran for 87 yards on seven carries and passed for 59 more. Both of his scores came in the Black Knights' 21-point third quarter. Brennan Myer passed for 88 yards for the Bears (1-1), who were outgained 648-165. - Army/AP College Football

Miami Football   Darian Mensah threw five touchdown passes in his Miami debut, Malachi Toney set a school-record with 234 yards receiving and the seventh-ranked Hurricanes opened their season with an 45-6 victory over Stanford on Friday night. Mensah and Toney connected on touchdown passes on the first two drives of the game for Miami (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) and then again on a 47-yarder in the third quarter that set the school record. Eddie Brown had 220 yards receiving in 1984 against Boston College in what was known as the “Hail Flutie” game. Mensah transferred to Miami from Duke this offseason and took little time to show the impact he could have on the Hurricanes by throwing a 48-yard pass to Toney on his first snap to set the tone against Stanford (1-1, 0-1).

Mensah capped that drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney and the two connected on a 2-yard score on the next possession with Toney punctuating both TDs with a Heisman pose for the Hurricanes fans in that corner of the stadium. Mensah added another touchdown pass to Daylyn Upshaw in the second quarter, a 34-yarder to Cooper Barkate in the third and the deep strike to Toney. He finished 27 for 30 for 401 yards, setting records for the most yards and TDs in a debut for Miami. Mensah led all power conference quarterbacks last season with 3,973 yards passing last season and now is teamed with one of the most dynamic receivers in Toney, who had 109 catches for 1,211 yards last season as a freshman when he helped Miami reach the College Football Playoff title game. Davis Warren threw for 214 yards for Stanford but couldn’t get the Cardinal in the end zone after leading them to a 37-27 win over Hawaii in his Cardinal debut last week. - AP College Football

USC Football   Jayden Maiava passed for 349 yards and threw two of his three touchdown passes to freshman Trent Mosley, and No. 14 Southern California rolled to a 39-0 victory over Fresno State on Friday night. Tanook Hines also had a TD reception, and freshman Kayden Dixon-Wyatt had six catches for 102 yards as the Trojans (2-0) followed up their Week 0 win over San Jose State by comprehensively dominating the Bulldogs (0-1). USC's defense gave an impressive effort under new coordinator Gary Patterson, allowing just 116 yards - a paltry 49 through three quarters - while recording two safeties and forcing two turnovers.

Maiava went 23 of 25 while playing just one series after halftime. Mosley, his new favorite target after a 118-yard debut last week, caught a 68-yard TD pass early and added a 10-yard scoring catch shortly before halftime, finishing with four catches for 104 yards. Jayden Mandal passed for 77 yards in his second career start for the Bulldogs, who last beat USC in 1992. Fresno State couldn't compete in its first game against a ranked opponent under head coach Matt Entz, the former USC assistant who took over the Bulldogs last season. Hines' TD catch capped USC's opening drive, and Mosley romped to his long TD after getting wide open down the middle. USC's defense added its first safety when a blitzing Kennedy Urlacher got to Mandal. After Mosley's second TD catch, Urlacher forced a fumble by Mandal. Waymond Jordan rushed for a TD and a 30-0 halftime lead. - AP College Football

Michigan State Football   Alessio Milivojevic converted a fourth down with a 5-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to Rodney Bullard early in the fourth quarter and Michigan State went on to beat Toledo 30-20 on Friday night in Pat Fitzgerald's debut as coach of the Spartans. Michigan State sealed the victory with an 11-play drive capped by Liam Boyd's 51-yard field goal late in the game. It was Fitzgerald's first win since leading Northwestern to a victory over Nebraska on Aug. 27, 2022. The Rockets were very competitive in coach Mike Jacobs' first game with the program, taking over after Jason Candle left to lead Connecticut.

John Alan Richter threw a second touchdown pass to Adjatay Dabbs in the third quarter and Connor Walendzak had a 71-yard run in the fourth that gave Toledo a 20-19 lead. Richter finished 12 of 21 for 196 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Milivojevic was 26 of 34 for 247 yards with a touchdown. Cam Edwards, a transfer from Connecticut, ran for 98 yards and he scored a touchdown on Michigan State's first possession.   Oklahoma Football   John Mateer threw three touchdown passes, Isaiah Sategna returned a punt 88 yards for a score and No. 10 Oklahoma overpowered UTEP 51-0 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams. The Sooners scored on their first eight possessions and limited UTEP to 198 yards. Mateer looked sharp, completing 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards before being pulled late in the third quarter. He threw scoring passes of 40 yards to Colorado State transfer Rocky Beers, 34 yards to Sategna and 48 yards to Virginia transfer Trell Harris.

Oklahoma drove 76 yards for a score on its first possession then forced a punt that was returned for a touchdown by Sategna to make it 14-0 midway through the first quarter. It was the first punt return for a score by OU since the 2023 season opener. The Sooners led 27-0 at halftime, then the defense went to work. Peyton Bowen forced a fumble that was recovered by Taylor Wein on UTEP first possession of the the third quarter.   Kansas Football   Isaiah Marshall threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns, Yasin Willis ran for 72 yards and two scores in his Kansas debut, and the Jayhawks rolled after a sluggish start to a 51-6 victory over Long Island University in their season-opener on Friday night. Buffalo transfer Nik McMillan had six catches for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Tate Nagy added a second-half scoring catch off a deflected pass, as the Jayhawks warmed up for the latest edition of the Border War against bitter rival Missouri next week. Kansas piled up 613 yards of total offense in the return of Andy Kotelnicki, their former offensive coordinator. He departed a couple of years ago for the same job at Penn State, but returned to the Jayhawks as the associate head coach earlier this year. Luca Stanzani threw for 111 yards for LIU (0-2). He also was the Sharks' leading rusher with 20 yards. Marshall won the starting job over Cole Ballard as the successor to Jalon Daniels, who'd played quarterback for most of the past six seasons at Kansas. Daniels was back in Memorial Stadium on a sweltering Friday night - the heat index was 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) at kickoff - after having won the backup job to Baker Mayfield with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The first few series for Marshall were a little shaky, and Kansas led just 6-0 early in the second quarter. But eventually, the sophomore QB began to find his athletic fleet of wide receivers downfield, and that opened up the rest of coach Lance Leipold's offense. The first big strike was a 46-yard pass to McMillan that set up Willis, a Syracuse transfer, whose second TD run made it 16-0. Then came a 47-yard throw to Nahzae Cox, setting up Jalen Dupree's scoring plunge, and a 19-yard touchdown toss to McMillan that sent the Jayhawks into halftime with a 30-0 lead. LIU had managed just 43 yards by that point. The Sharks finished with 146 for the game. The Jayhawks soaked up most of the third quarter with another touchdown drive, and Ballard and the backups took care of the rest, much to the delight of PGA Tour star and Kansas alum Gary Woodland, who watched the game from the sideline. - AP College Football

San Jose State Football   Luke Weaver threw three touchdown passes, two to Cooper Hoch, and San Jose State rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Eastern Michigan 27-21 on Friday night. Eastern Michigan took a 21-17 lead into the final quarter after Weaver fumbled on a sack by Ronn Hardin near the San Jose State goal line and Bryce Llewellyn recovered the loose ball. Weaver then rallied the Spartans and his 40-yard touchdown pass to Hoch put the Spartans (1-1) back ahead 24-21 with about 11 minutes remaining. Their defense held Eastern Michigan to 25 yards in the fourth quarter and Trajan Sinatra's 49-yard field goal in the final two minutes wrapped up the scoring. Weaver completed 23 of 39 passes for 316 yards and was intercepted once. Hoch had 115 receiving yards and Jabari Bates led the ground game with 119 yards.

Noah Kim had 174 yards passing with a touchdown for the Eagles (1-1). He threw one interception. Eastern Michigan scored first when Kim hit Harold Mack with a short touchdown pass six minutes into the second quarter. The Spartans rallied with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Weaver to Jase Nix and a 45-yard field goal by Sinatra on the final play of the half for a 10-7 lead.
