Vanderbilt Football   The NCAA was back in court Tuesday fighting for the future of its eligibility rules through the case of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who is playing his fourth Division I season under a preliminary injunction. Attorney Rakesh Kilaru argued in court before a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. District Court of Appeals that the NCAA believes its rules determining athlete eligibility do not violate the Sherman Act or other antitrust laws. Kilaru also said the association intends to enforce its rules. “I would venture we’ll be back in court in weeks or months,” Kilaru said. Any ruling by the appeals court won’t affect Pavia’s status this season. The NCAA granted a waiver after the injunction granting eligibility through the 2025-26 academic year for junior college athletes who would have exhausted eligibility during the 2024-25 academic year. A federal judge agreed last December that Pavia had a strong likelihood of success at trial against the NCAA rule limiting junior college players’ eligibility as a restraint of trade under the Sherman Act.

Pavia started playing at New Mexico Military Institute in 2020 (the NCAA did not count that season toward eligibility because of the pandemic.) He led the junior college to the 2021 national championship, then played at New Mexico State in 2022 and 2023 before transferring to Vanderbilt for the 2024 season. This is his fourth Division I season. Downton told judges the issue is that the NCAA’s rules are commercial in nature by limiting the labor market. The NCAA starts an athlete’s eligibility clock by counting even years played outside the association’s membership at junior colleges. After the hearing, Downton said they are hoping for a ruling on the case’s merits even as Pavia has NFL plans in 2026. Pavia’s lawsuit includes the possibility of a fifth year of eligibility within five consecutive years targeting the NCAA’s Redshirt and Five-Year rules — a season which Downton says his client isn’t interested in. - AP College Football

LSU Football   LSU coach Brian Kelly said quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is dealing with a torso injury and probably won't be fully recovered until he can rest during the Tigers' bye week later this month. Kelly said Nussmeier developed the injury from throwing so much in preseason camp, and that LSU's trainers are limiting his work in practice as he recovers. "He's been slowed a little bit with a torso injury, and he's fighting through it, and he's getting better," Kelly told reporters Monday. "He's not going to be able to shut it down until the bye week."

The third-ranked Tigers host FCS program Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday (7:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network) and play at No. 13 Ole Miss on Sept. 27 before their first open date of the season. "Come Saturday, he's good to go," Kelly said. "We've limited him a little bit during the week because of the tightness he's had in his torso. It's an upper-body injury, and you want to be careful with how many reps he's getting throwing the football. He's overcoming that, but we kept cut him down substantially." Kelly said he believes Nussmeier is on the "other side" of the injury. Nussmeier, who is considered a potential first-round pick in next year's NFL draft, is completing 65.1% of his attempts for 689 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He ranks ninth in the SEC with 229.7 yards per game. In early August, Kelly revealed that Nussmeier was dealing with patellar tendinitis in his knee. Nussmeier ranked fifth nationally in passing yards (4,052) last season, his first as LSU's starter. - ESPN College Football

Michigan Football   Michigan will be without starting left guard Giovanni El-Hadi for several more weeks with an injury, but could see safety Rod Moore play his first game since the end of the 2023 season this coming Saturday at Nebraska. El-Hadi, a fifth-year player and second-year starter, injured his ankle in Michigan's Sept. 6 loss at Oklahoma. He sat out Saturday's win against Central Michigan and likely will miss the first few Big Ten games, acting head coach Bill Poggi said Monday. The offensive line could get a boost at Nebraska as starting right guard Brady Norton, who missed the Central Michigan game, will practice this week and could return in Lincoln.

Moore, a third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2023 who made the win-sealing interception against Ohio State, has not played since tearing his ACL and meniscus in spring practice of 2024. He had to undergo a second meniscus repair that delayed his return, but was cleared for the Central Michigan game and warmed up. Poggi said he expects Moore to play for the 21st-ranked Wolverines at Nebraska. Moore has 141 career tackles, with six interceptions and 13 passes defended. - ESPN College Football
