Schondelmyer was 19-of-23 passing on his career day with Michael Mussari his favorite target with eight catches for 169 yards and two scores for the Flyers (3-1).   Houston Football   Ethan Sanchez kicked a 24-yard field goal in overtime and Houston rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit for a 27-24 victory over Oregon State on Friday night. Conner Weigman threw for 270 yards and two long fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Cougars, who improved to 4-0 for their best start since 2016 when they opened with five straight wins. Maalik Murphy threw for 201 yards and a touchdown for Oregon State, which fell to 0-5 to start the season. The Cougars trailed 24-10 in the fourth quarter, but Weigman threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Stephon Johnson to close the gap for with 5:59 left. Houston tied it with Weigman's 50-yard pass to Tanner Koziol with 3:40 to go. "It was a hard win. We didn't play real good in the first half, particularly offensively," Houston coach Willie Fritz said. "But we started putting it together in the fourth quarter when we needed it. Thank goodness." The Beavers got within field goal range with five seconds left on the clock, but backup kicker Cameron Smith's 46-yard attempt was blocked and the game went to overtime.

Oregon State's fourth-and-1 attempt failed in overtime before Sanchez's game-winning field goal. "I mean, nothing brings a team closer than a game like this," Koziol said. "Now we've looked at each other in the face of a loss, and we brought it out to a win. We're going to come back stronger." Oregon State had control until the final quarter of regulation. Trey Glasper intercepted Weigman on the Houston 32 and ran it back to the 7-yard line. Jake Reichle finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put Oregon State up 7-0. Murphy threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Crosby to make it 14-0. Houston threatened in the second quarter, getting as close as the Oregon State 1, but the Beavers' defense held despite several attempts and the Cougars settled for Ethan Sanchez's 25-yard field goal. Houston scored on Weigman's 1-yard run to make it 14-10 at halftime. - Houston/AP College Football

  09/27/25 - QB Sam Leavitt, rJr/2028, LSU + More +

LSU Football   Jesus Gomez kicked a 23-yard field goal with 1:14 left and Arizona State overcame a 17-point deficit to beat No. 24 TCU 27-24 on Friday night. The Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) were down 17-0 in the second quarter before rallying behind Sam Leavitt and Jordyn Tyson to pull out a second straight late win. "Every close of the game, it's incredible our guys find ways to get it done in the big moments," Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said. "It's a testament to the character of the guys were have on our team." Leavitt threw his second touchdown pass to Tyson, from 4 yards with 1:50 left in regulation, and Prince Dorbuh followed with a strip sack of TCU's Josh Hoover, setting up Arizona State at TCU's 15. Gomez, who missed two earlier field goals, split the uprights after the Sun Devils originally lined up to go for it on fourth-and-inches. Gomez also hit a 43-yard field goal as time expired in Arizona State's 27-24 victory over Baylor last week. Arizona State's Martell Hughes sealed it with the second interception of Hoover.

Leavitt threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-38 passing, connecting with Tyson eight times for 126 yards. Raleek Brown ran for 147 yards. "Down 17-0, things just weren't going our way," Leavitt said. "We're a really tough team and we just compete." TCU (3-1, 0-1) had its chances. The Horned Frogs let the early lead slip away, but went up 24-17 on Hoover's 1-yard sneak early in the fourth quarter and stopped Arizona State twice from inside their own 5. TCU couldn't pull it off, plagued by three turnovers, six sacks and an anemic rushing game that produced 10 yards on 25 carries. "We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot," TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. Heavy afternoon storms soaked the field and strong wind lingered well past kickoff. It did little to slow down the Horned Frogs early. TCU took advantage of a short field for Trent Battle's 13-yard touchdown run and Jeremy Payne scored on a 7-yard run. The Horned Frogs then stopped a fourth-and-2 to force a turnover on downs at Arizona State's 38, leading to a field goal that put them up 17-0.   Virginia Football   Chandler Morris scored on a 4-yard run in the second overtime and Virginia beat No. 8 Florida State 46-38 on Friday night for its first home victory over a Top 10 team since also beating the Seminoles in 2005. Morris ran for three scores and had two touchdown passes for the Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). After the go-ahead TD run, he completed a pass to Trell Harris for the 2-point conversion. Florida State (3-1, 0-1) had a chance to tie, but Duce Robinson bobbled a pass going out the back of the end zone on third down. On fourth-and-12 at the 27, Tommy Castellanos' heave into the end zone was intercepted by Ja'Son Prevard, with Cavaliers fans instantly storming the field.

Florida State rallied to force overtime, with Castellanos throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Randy Pittman Jr. on a fourth-down play with 32 seconds left. The teams traded field goals in the first overtime. Robinson caught nine passes for 147 yards and a touchdown, and Castellanos threw for 254 and a score and ran for another 78 yards and a touchdown. J'Mari Taylor ran for 99 yards and a score as Virginia's run game ate up the clock in the second half. Virginia turned a pair of first-quarter takeaways into touchdowns and an early 14-0 lead, but Florida State stormed back to go ahead 21-14 at the half, fueled by two interceptions. The teams were tied at 21 at halftime and 28 after three quarters. - Virginia/AP College Football

Houser threw for two touchdowns and ran for another - all in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead. Anthony Smith had a catch of 40 yards or more on ECU's opening two drives, the second giving the Pirates a 14-0 lead. Houser connected with Jayvontay Conner for a 20-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left in the first quarter. ECU's touchdown in the second half came when backup holder Kyler Pearson ran for a 32-yard touchdown on a fake field goal to cap the scoring.

Quarterback Dewayne Coleman added 51 yards rushing, including a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Army had just five first downs and 128 total yards in the first half. It was the first time the Black Knights had been shutout in the first half since 2023 against LSU.   Mississippi Football   Auburn receiver Horatio Fields, who ranks third on the team with 12 receptions for 106 yards a touchdown this season, is sidelined indefinitely with a broken foot. Coach Hugh Freeze said the 6-foot-2 senior was injured in practice Tuesday. Fields transferred to Auburn this year after four years at Wake Forest. "Kind of the leader of that receiver room who knew every position and gave us flexibility to do a lot of things," Freeze said during the Southeastern Conference coaches conference call Wednesday. "And it's a difficult loss." Freeze said sophomore Perry Thompson is the next man up and will get a chance to fill Fields' role when the Tigers (3-1, 0-1 SEC) play at No. 9 Texas A&M (3-0, 0-0) on Saturday. "It's his time to show he's ready and to earn it, and obviously we're getting Sam (Turner) prepared, too, to help," Freeze said. "Perry has the potential and talent to do really good things. "He's got to learn to do them consistently, over and over again, and with technique. He shows flashes of that. Now we just need it to be more consistent, but he'll be the first one to get that opportunity." - AP College Football

Oklahoma State Football   The Mike Gundy era is over. Gundy, one of college football's most colorful coaches over the last two decades, was fired by Oklahoma State on Tuesday. The 58-year-old Gundy had a career record of 170-90 at his alma mater, where he was a star quarterback in the late 1980s. He posted winning records every season from 2006 to 2023, but had losing records in his final two years. He entered the season ranked third among active coaches in victories at their current school, trailing only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and Clemson's Dabo Swinney. In all, Gundy spent well over 30 years at Oklahoma State as a player, assistant coach and head coach. As a player, he was the undersized gunslinger who balanced the Cowboys' offense when it featured star running backs Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders.

He ended his career as the Big 8's all-time leading passer, then had several assistant coaching roles at the school before reviving the program as head coach. "Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership," Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg said in a statement. "I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football." Gundy arrived as head coach in 2005, and the Oklahoma City native's charm and sense of humor appealed to fans and recruits and helped the Cowboys compete with and often surpass better-funded schools. As late billionaire T. Boone Pickens poured millions into the program, Gundy turned Oklahoma State into an unlikely powerhouse that often affected the national championship race. The Cowboys won the Big 12 in 2011 and played in the Big 12 title game in 2021 and 2023. He led the Cowboys to five New Year's Six bowl appearances and eight 10-win seasons. - AP College Football

Illinois Football   No. 23 Illinois will have to play most of the season without star cornerback Xavier Scott, coach Bret Bielema said Monday. Scott will undergo a procedure on Wednesday for the injury that caused him to miss a 63-10 loss at No. 11 Indiana last weekend, Bielema said. Multiple reports have indicated Scott's injury is to his lower leg. "He will be out the majority of the rest of the year, but there's a chance he could come back at the end," Bielema said. Scott earned first-team Associated Press all-Big Ten honors last season. He finished as one of 15 finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award. He intercepted four passes in 2024 and two in 2023. Scott's injury complicates Illinois' hopes of bouncing back from its blowout loss to Indiana as the Ilini (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) prepare to host No. 21 Southern California (4-0, 2-0) on Saturday. USC quarterback Jayden Maiava leads all Bowl Subdivision players in passer rating and has thrown nine touchdown passes without an interception. - AP College Football

Syracuse Football   Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left Achilles tendon, coach Fran Brown announced Monday, two days after the junior led the Orange to their most impressive win of the season. Angeli was scheduled to have surgery later in the day. Brown hoped the 21-year-old will recover in time for spring sessions. "A really good football player, a great person, just sad for him," Brown said of the Notre Dame transfer. "It's been a nice little journey with him for the time that we've had him to play, and I'm excited about the time when he comes back." Angeli was hurt on a noncontact play while rolling out of the pocket in the third quarter of a 34-21 win at Clemson. He finished 18 of 31 for 244 yards with two touchdowns before leaving the game with Syracuse leading 27-14.

The injury leaves Syracuse (3-1, 1-0 ACC) turning to Rickie Collins to take over as the Orange prepare to host Duke (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday. "(Collins) was able to command the offense," Brown said of Collins' relief appearance against Clemson. "It just shows that you have to continue to have faith and work hard and things may fall your way." Collins was initially projected to be the Orange's starter after transferring to Syracuse this offseason following two years as a backup at LSU. Collins, however, was beaten out for the starting job by Angeli, who joined the program after spring practices. "It wasn't a huge difference of why we picked a guy," Brown said of the quarterback competition. "It took me some time to pick the quarterback, so I'm very thankful we had two." Brown said Angeli and Collins have developed a tight relationship and watch film together regularly. "No one deserves the opportunity more than (Collins) does," Brown said. "Just his mental toughness of understanding the fronts and everything of that nature. He already has a huge arm. He can make every throw." - AP College Football
