Vanderbilt Football   Diego Pavia threw for 160 yards and a score and ran for 86 yards and two more touchdowns as No. 17 Vanderbilt beat 10th-ranked LSU 31-24 on Saturday to snap a 10-game skid against the Tigers. Vanderbilt never trailed in what was the fourth meeting since 1947 with both schools ranked in the AP poll. Vanderbilt (6-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) beat LSU for the first time since 1990. The Tigers (5-2, 2-2) had some big plays with Garrett Nussmeier throwing for 225 yards and two TDs, including a 62-yarder to Zavion Thomas. Caden Durham also had a 51-yard run down to the Vandy 2 before the Commodores forced LSU to settle for one of four field-goal attempts.

That wasn't enough against a Vanderbilt offense that came in seventh in the nation averaging 43.2 points a game. The Commodores scored the most points LSU has given up this season with a defense ranked fifth in the country allowing 11.8 points a game. Vanderbilt punted only twice, both times in the fourth quarter. LSU's best chance came after the first Vandy punt trailing 31-24 with 8:55 left. Zaylin Wood sacked Nussmeier on the first play.   Connecticut Football   Joe Fagnano threw for a career-high 362 yards and four touchdowns, including 50-, 43-and 38-yard scores, and Connecticut beat Boston College 38-23 on Saturday to send the Eagles to their sixth straight loss. Juice Vereen caught four passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies (5-2), who beat Boston College for the second time in three tries and won in Chestnut Hill for the first time ever. Fagnano completed 23 of 31 passes and also ran for a 2-yard score. Skyler Bell caught 10 passes for 125 yards and a 38-yard TD midway through the fourth quarter clinched it.

BC (1-6) led 20-17 thanks to a 39-yard TD pass from newly promoted starting quarterback Grayson James to Reed Harris just before the half. But Fagnano hit John Neider for a 43-yard score to start the third quarter, then connected with Vereen from 14-yards out to make it 31-20. BC drove to the Huskies 7 but settled for a field goal to make it a one-score game. But Fagnano found Bell at the BC 36 before he scampered to the left sideline and into the end zone to make it 38-23. James replaced Thomas Castellanos as the starter last season, but he was bumped to No. 2 on the depth chart this season in favor of former Alabama backup Dylan Lonergan. Lonergan threw a game-sealing interception in a four-point loss to California on Sept. 27, then struggled in blowout losses to Pittsburgh and Clemson. In his first start of the season, James completed 16 of 28 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns; he was sacked seven times.   California Football   Brent Austin forced a fumble at the goal line and recovered it in the end zone to preserve the lead in the fourth quarter, giving California a 21-18 victory over Bill Belichick and North Carolina on Friday night. Belichick looked poised for his first win in four games against a power conference opponent since taking over the Tar Heels (2-4, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) when North Carolina was driving for the go-ahead score. Gio Lopez hit Nathan Leacock on a short pass and Leacock was running toward the end zone when Austin knocked the ball out just before he crossed the goal line. Austin then dove on the loose ball in the end zone to give the Golden Bears (5-2, 2-1) the ball back with 3:48 to play. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele then completed two key passes for first downs on the ensuing drive and Cal burned all but fives seconds off to get the win. Sagapolutele also threw a TD pass and ran for another score for the Bears.

Belichick arrived at North Carolina with plenty of fanfare after winning six Super Bowls as a head coach in the NFL. But the results have been underwhelming as the Tar Heels have lost all four games against power conference opponents. After getting outscored by 87 points in the first three losses, the Tar Heels were far more competitive against Cal even if the end result was the same. The game started like the season has gone for North Carolina with Shanard Clower losing a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and Cal turning it into a touchdown when Sagapolutele scored four plays later. But the Tar Heels tied the game on Benjamin Hall's 18-yard run and trailing only 14-10 at the half for their closest first half in four games against power teams this season. Cal took the second-half kickoff and drive down for a touchdown to take a 21-10 lead on Kendrick Raphael's 2-yard run but couldn't pull away as North Carolina cut it to 21-18 on Davion Gause's TD run early in the fourth quarter. - California/AP College Football

Utah State (4-3, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) took a 27-25 lead on Rinker's 45-yard field goal at the end of a 14-play drive with 6:09 left to play. Rinker added a 44-yarder to cap the scoring with 1:58 left. Denis Lynch kicked a 37-yard field goal on the opening drive to give San Jose State (2-5, 1-2) the lead. Receiver Braden Pegan answered with a 2-yard touchdown run on Utah State's first drive and the Aggies led 7-3. Walker Eget connected with Leland Smith for a 43-yard gain with 3:30 left before halftime. Six plays later Eget hit Lamar Radcliffe for a 15-yard touchdown and a 9-7 Spartans' lead after a missed extra-point kick.

Utah State used the final minute to get a 31-yard field goal from Rinker for a 10-9 lead at halftime. Barnes fired a 74-yard scoring strike to Anthony Garcia three plays into the third quarter, but Steve Chavez-Soto scored on a 66-yard run three plays later to cut it to 17-16. Barnes scored on a 2-yard run, but Lynch kicked a 35-yard field goal and the Spartans trailed 24-19 after three quarters. Eget and Smith teamed up for a 45-yard touchdown with 11:48 remaining and San Jose State led 25-24 after Eget's two-point pass was unsuccessful. Barnes completed 22 of 31 passes for 326 yards and added 54 yards on 16 rushes. Garcia had three receptions for 121 yards. Eget finished with 340 yards on 27-for-49 passing.   Minnesota Football   Darius Taylor ran for 148 yards and a touchdown, Drake Lindsey completed 16 of 20 passes for 153 yards and a score and Minnesota sacked quarterback Dylan Raiola nine times in a 24-6 victory over No. 25 Nebraska on Friday night. The Gophers (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) have won six straight against the Cornhuskers (5-2, 2-2), who fell short in their bid to win back-to-back road games in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2006. Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck improved to 7-1 against Nebraska, which hasn't won in Minneapolis since 2015. Raiola completed 17 of 25 passes for 177 yards for the Huskers, who spent part of a short week addressing rumors of coach Matt Rhule's candidacy for the vacant Penn State job.

Anthony Smith and Karter Menz each had 2 1/2 sacks for Minnesota. Aided by the program's most sacks since Fleck became head coach in 2017, the Gophers held Nebraska to a season-low 36 yards rushing. Lindsey found Le'Meke Brockington in the front corner of the end zone on a 20-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-6 with 2:36 left in the third quarter. A fourth-down defensive holding call kept the 98-yard, 14-play drive intact. A pass-interference penalty negated a Nebraska interception on Minnesota's next possession, capped by Taylor's 1-yard touchdown run. Minnesota led 7-6 at halftime thanks to a 1-yard, tush-push score by Lindsey 1:40 into the second quarter. Taylor's 71-yard run down the right sideline set up the touchdown and eclipsed the running back's 44 yards in the previous two games, his first since missing two contests with an injury. - Minnesota/AP College Football
