Vanderbilt Football   Vanderbilt is a top-10 team in college football for the first time since 1947 in an Associated Press poll that got a nearly complete makeover Sunday after a weekend when nine Top 25 teams lost. Ohio State was the only team to hold its spot, remaining No. 1 for an eighth straight week after shutting out Wisconsin 34-0 on the road. Beyond the Buckeyes, significant revision was required with four top-10 teams losing in the same week for a third time this season. Nine Top 25 losing teams were the most since Week 5 in 2022, when 10 went down, according to Sportradar. Four of the losses this week were to unranked opponents. The Buckeyes received 60 first-place votes, 10 more than a week ago. No. 2 Indiana pulled away from Michigan State, improved its program-record ranking by one spot and got the other six first-place votes.

Texas A&M's one-rung promotion to No. 3 gives the Aggies their highest ranking since 1995. No. 4 Alabama has its highest ranking of the season and No. 5 Georgia returned to the top five after a three-week absence. Oregon, Georgia Tech, Mississippi, Miami and Vanderbilt round out the top 10. The Ducks bounced back from their home loss to Indiana with a lopsided road win over Rutgers. Georgia Tech, which won at Duke, hadn't been in the top 10 since 2014 or ranked as high since 2009. Mississippi's loss to Georgia caused it to slip three spots, and Miami fell seven after losing to unranked Louisville. Vanderbilt rallied from its loss at Alabama two weeks ago with a 31-24 win over then-No. 10 LSU. The Commodores earned a seven-spot promotion for their first win over the Tigers since 1990. At 6-1, Vandy is off to its best start since 1950 with two wins over ranked opponents. Texas Tech's first loss came at Arizona State and dropped the Red Raiders seven spots to No. 14. LSU took the biggest fall, plunging 10 spots to No. 20 for its lowest ranking of the season. - AP College Football

  10/19/25 - QB DJ Lagway, Jr/2028, Baylor + More +

Baylor Football   Florida fired coach Billy Napier on Sunday, dumping him a day after an error-filled win against Mississippi State that included more head-scratching calls and offensive lulls like those that marked much of his four-year run with the Gators. Athletic director Scott Stricklin made the move following a 23-21 victory that looked like it was going to be gut-wrenching loss until defensive tackle Michai Boireau picked off a pass with 21 seconds remaining and the Bulldogs near field-goal range. The game-sealing takeaway energized the Swamp, but the home crowd quickly turned on Napier and booed him as he sprinted off the field.

Stricklin had seen enough and pulled the plug on a run that most of the Florida faithful thought lasted longer than it should have. "While his influence was positive, it ultimately did not translate into the level of success we expect on the field," Stricklin said in a lengthy statement. Napier went 22-23 in four seasons at Florida, including 12-16 in Southeastern Conference play. He was 5-17 against ranked opponents, including 0-14 away from home, and declined to give up his play-calling role despite calls to do so. Equally damning: his 3-12 mark against rivals Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami and Tennessee includes the fewest wins by a Florida coach in such games since the late 1930s. Receivers coach Billy Gonzales is the interim head coach for Florida's remaining five games, beginning against rival Georgia (6-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) on Nov. 1 in Jacksonville. The Gators (3-4, 2-2) have an off week to regroup from the chaos that often comes with a coaching change. Jettisoning Napier will temporarily quell a frustrated fanbase, but the group won't truly be satisfied until the Gators hire someone with a proven track record at college football's highest level. Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin is expected to top the list, although Stricklin passed on him when he hired Napier from Louisiana-Lafayette in November 2021. Louisville's Jeff Brohm, Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz and Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman also could be targets. - AP College Football

Michigan Football   Colorado State fired football coach Jay Norvell on Sunday, a day after the Rams dropped to 2-5 with a loss to Hawaii and a season removed from a bowl game. Norvell was in his fourth season at Colorado State. He is owed a $1.5 million buyout, according to reports. He finished 18-26 with the Rams, including an appearance in the Arizona Bowl last season. The Rams appointed defensive coordinator Tyson Summers as their interim head coach as they search for a replacement. He takes over as the Rams get set to play at Wyoming next weekend in the annual Border War. "My admiration for Jay and appreciation for his integrity make this decision that much more difficult," Colorado State athletic director John Weber said in a statement. "Jay has made this program better during his tenure at CSU."

Norvell became the first Black head football coach in program history when he signed a five-year deal on Dec. 6, 2021, after making Nevada a contender in the Mountain West Conference. His teams showed improvement in each of his first three season in Fort Collins. The Rams were 3-9 in 2022, 5-7 in '23 and 8-5 last season. To try to ignite a stagnant offense, Norvell made a quarterback change late last month, benching Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and going with Jackson Brousseau. It didn't pay off immediately as the Rams lost 20-3 to Washington State. Colorado State followed that up with a loss at San Diego State before beating Fresno State at home. The final game for Norvell was a 31-19 loss to Hawaii on Saturday night. Known for his innovative offenses, the 62-year-old Norvell was brought in after going 33-26 at Nevada. Colorado State elected to make the coaching change as the program prepares to leave the Mountain West next season for the Pac-12. The Rams are set to join Utah State, San Diego State, Fresno State and Boise State in a rebuilt version of the storied conference, which already includes Oregon State and Washington State. The Pac-12 recently added Texas State in order to reach the eight-team minimum to be eligible for a bid for its conference champion in the College Football Playoff. - AP College Football

Stanford Football   Stanford tackled Gavin Sawchuk just short of the goal line on an untimed down and the Cardinal barely hung on to hand Florida State its ninth straight Atlantic Coast Conference loss with a 20-13 victory on Saturday night. "It comes down to the last play," interim cosch Frank Reich said. "Just credit to our defense ... just to keep him just short of the goal line. I know it was close, but just that last-ditch effort to get him on the ground. Big play." The Seminoles (3-4, 0-4) nearly pulled off an improbable comeback when backup quarterback Kevin Sperry completed a 49-yard desperation heave to Micahi Danzy on third and 22 to get the ball to the 9 with 2 seconds left. Stanford's Che Ojarikre was then called for pass interference in the end zone, giving the Seminoles an untimed down from the 2. Sperry threw a shovel pass to Galvan who was fighting for the end zone but was stopped just short by Matt Rose and Jahsiah Galvan. The play went to replay review and after a few tense moments Stanford (3-4, 2-2) was able to celebrate its third straight home win. "At the end of the day we played with energy and passion and made plays when we had to make plays," Reich said. The Cardinal defense came up big late, stopping Tommy Castellanos just short on fourth-and-2 keeper from the 14 with a little more than 5 minutes to play and on another drive with with 1:26 to play.

Castellanos was knocked out on the that drive on a targeting foul against Mitch Leigber. Sperry came in and almost led the Seminoles to the their first conference win since beating California on Sept. 21, 2024. "I believe in the guys that we have. I do," coach Mike Norvell said. "I think that they've shown fight throughout. We didn't fight very smart tonight. But they did fight to the end. ... We were there on the last play and had a chance and they said we were short." Stanford broke out to an early lead with help from a key mistake by the Seminoles. Edwin Joseph got called for offsides for Florida State, turning a missed 30-yard FG for Stanford into a 7-yard TD pass from Ben Gulbranson to CJ Williams that made it 10-3. - Stanford/AP College Football
