It capped a wild finish for the Tribe, who trailed 21-13 with 3:19 left in regulation. William & Mary went 67 yards in four plays, scoring on a 2-yard run by Rashad Raymond with 1:51 to play. After Hughes' completion for the 2-point conversion to get within 24-21, the Tribe recovered the onside kick.

Indiana Football   Omar Cooper Jr. jumped to catch a pass from Fernando Mendoza in the back of the end zone, sweeping his inside foot within the field of play to go ahead of Penn State 27-24 with 36 seconds remaining and save No. 2 Indiana from its first loss of the season on Saturday. The downtrodden Nittany Lions, led by an interim coach and riding the school's longest losing streak in 21 years, almost denied the Hoosiers (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) their first Happy Valley win in school history. Penn State (3-6, 0-6) came back from down 13 points in the third quarter and was a couple of first downs away from the upset. Once the Nittany Lions were forced to punt, they couldn't respond with late-game heroics of their own in the little time the Hoosiers left them. A Hail Mary effort from midfield was unsuccessful. "It was the most improbable victory I have ever been a part of," Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said. "And there couldn't have been a better place to make it happen." The Hoosiers entered Happy Valley used to losing in the sprawling, 107,000-seat Beaver Stadium.

Before Saturday, the Nittany Lions owned a 25-2 edge head-to-head, winning all 13 games on their home field. "It's just a rocking crowd, when you hear that silence when you get hit when you throw, then you know it's a completion," said Mendoza, who was sacked three times, threw for 218 yards with one touchdown and an interception and also ran in a score. Penn State rallied to take the lead 24-20 in the fourth quarter when Ethan Grunkemeyer connected with Nicholas Singleton for a 19-yard score with 6:27 to play. Penn State punted to Indiana with 1:51 remaining, giving Mendoza the ball back at his own 20. He was sacked on first down, but recovered to hit receivers for 22, 12, 29 and 17 yards before finding Cooper at the back edge of the end zone. Afterward, a smiling Cooper called it the best catch of his career. Mendoza agreed. Kaelon Black scored a rushing touchdown and Nico Radicic kicked two field goals for the Hoosiers. Charlie Becker had seven receptions for 118 yards and Cooper finished with six receptions for 32 yards. Singleton added two rushing touchdowns for the Nittany Lions, who are playing under interim coach Terry Smith and have lost six in a row. - Indiana/AP College Football

San Diego Football   Matt Colombo and Adam Criter combined for 238 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns apiece in San Diego's 43-27 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday. Colombo carried 15 times for 121 yards and Criter had 117 yards on 26 carries. They had all but four of the Toreros' rushing yards with quarterback Dom Nankil gaining four yards on three carries. Nankil completed 21 of 29 passes for 219 yards with one touchdown for San Diego (6-4, 4-2 Pioneer Football League).

Valpo's Rowan Keefe threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter and the Beacons (1-9, 0-6) led 14-13 at halftime. Criter's 9-yard run made it 20-14 in the third quarter but Ryan Ricketti's 100-yard return on the ensuing kickoff gave Valpo a 21-20 lead. San Diego took the lead for good, 26-21, on Colombo's 3-yard touchdown run in the middle of the third quarter. Keefe threw for 234 yards with three touchdowns but he was intercepted three times. Other than a 67-10 victory against Virginia Lynchburg to open the season, this was only the second time that the Beacons scored more than 17 points. - AP College Football

Villanova Football   Ja'briel Mace rushed for a school-record 291 yards and four touchdowns and Villanova beat Towson 28-10 on Saturday for the Wildcats' sixth straight win. Mace broke Brian Westbrook's record of 287 against Hofstra in 2001. Mace became the first Wildcat to rush for over 200 yards since 2013. His effort was the ninth 200-yard rushing game in school history.

Mace scored on 8-yard run in the first half that ended in a 7-7 tie. He ran for a 39-yard touchdown early in the third then added 82- and 22-yard scores in the final minutes of the game to finish off the win for the Wildcats (7-2, 6-1 Coastal Athletic Association), who are ranked eighth in the FCS coaches' poll.   Southern Methodist Football   SMU didn't have a letdown after its big victory over Miami last weekend. Kevin Jennings threw for three touchdowns and 326 yards to carry SMU to a 45-13 victory over Boston College on Saturday, spoiling the Eagles' annual Red Bandana Game and sending them to their ninth straight loss. The game honors the memory of Welles Crowther, a BC graduate and former lacrosse player, who was working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and died rescuing people. He was known for carrying a red bandanna. Jennings completed 16-of-32 passes with TD throws of 25, 61 and 37 yards for the Mustangs (7-3, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Derrick McFall ran for three TDs. "College football has turned into a game of explosive plays," SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said. "But, if you're explosive and you can run the ball, then you control the game a little better." Dylan Lonergan was 25 of 37 for 232 yards with a TD and interception for BC (1-9, 0-6) after starting QB Grayson James was benched following fumbling twice in the opening quarter. SMU came into the day leading the FBS with 22 turnovers gained.

Leading 17-6, the Mustangs took control when Jennings hit Yamir Knight with the 61-yarder. Knight was wide open deep over-the-middle, cut to his left after the catch and slipped inside the pylon for the score on SMU's first drive of the second half. Jennings then hit Matthew Hibner with the 37-yard TD toss. Coming off an upset victory over then-No. 10 Miami, the Mustangs built a 17-0 lead before the Eagles kicked a pair of late second-quarter field goals. "Our goal this game was not to let that happen," Jennings said about a loss at Wake Forest after an emotional win at Clemson.   Virginia Tech Football   West Virginia's Curtis Jones Jr. said he's available to play running back whenever he's needed. Jones normally lines up at a hybrid linebacker position, but the sophomore who played on both sides of the ball in high school has been given more practice time in the offensive backfield in recent weeks due to numerous injuries to others. On Saturday, Jones had two short TD runs on his three carries and West Virginia held off Colorado 29-22. "He could be a weapon," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez said. Jones was the only back who weighed more than 180 pounds available for the Mountaineers after backup Tyler Jacklish got hurt in practice on Wednesday. "I had to shake the dust off a little bit in practice," Jones said, adding that it doesn't matter what side of the ball he's playing on. "I'm just trying to help my team in any situation I can." West Virginia (4-6, 2-6 Big 12) has won two straight for the first time this season.

Colorado (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) has lost three straight. The Buffaloes kept this one close after being outscored 105-24 in their previous two contests. Colorado freshman Ju Ju Lewis threw two touchdown passes in his first start in place of Kaidon Salter. He brought the Buffaloes within 19-16 with a 23-yard scoring toss to Omarion Miller midway through the third quarter. But Colorado never held the lead. Jones punched in a 2-yard run for a score in the second quarter, then scoring on a 4-yard run with 4:15 left in the game for a 29-19 lead. After Alejandro Mata's third field goal brought Colorado within 29-22 with 1:16 left, West Virginia recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. - West Virginia/AP College Football
