C.J. Stroud closed 2021 with an explosive Rose Bowl performance that backed up his selection as Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He opens 2022 as the favorite to repeat that award. Stroud received 32 of 35 first-place votes for preseason offensive player of the year in the 12th annual cleveland.com preseason Big Ten football poll. Jaxon Smith-Njibga, Stroud's top returning receiver who broke the Big Ten single-season record for receiving yards last season, landed two first-place votes. He edged Wisconsin running back Braelon Allen by five points for second place.

Allen appeared on four more ballots, but received no first-place votes. Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa received the other first-place vote. Stroud received two first-place votes in last year's poll despite not yet being named OSU's starter at the time. He went on to become a Heisman Trophy finalist after throwing for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns. That included five games of 400 or more yards and five games with four or more touchdowns without an interception. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
