  06/04/22 - QB Cade McNamararSr/2025, Iowa

Jim Harbaugh will make no declarations, no promises as to what might come out of Michigan's quarterback competition this fall. The only thing he expects between Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy, he told reporters Thursday, is a phrase the coach has uttered many times before. "It'll be competitive," Harbaugh said at the Michigan football showcase at Ferris State University. "The dynamic, I would say, is competitive." As the Wolverines inch closer to fall camp and begin summer workouts this summer in Ann Arbor, everyone wants to know what happens at quarterback. McNamara is coming off an impressive season, throwing for more than 2,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first full season as starter, leading Michigan to a 12-2 season, Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff berth.

As McNamara, a redshirt junior, aptly reminded the media in the spring: "I'm a Big Ten championship starting quarterback." Meanwhile, all McNamara has heard the last 12 months has been chatter about J.J. McCarthy, the former five-star recruit with a big arm and elite athleticism. Harbaugh declared the quarterback job open entering spring, but McCarthy was quickly limited in his throwing with an undisclosed shoulder injury. McCarthy is believed to be healthy and throwing again, according to media reports, suggesting he'll be full-go once camp begins in early August. "Every time I ask him, that's what he's saying," Harbaugh said. "He's feeling good about it. The beautiful thing about J.J. McCarthy is, he's like a kid in a candy store. That's his mentality. That's his attitude. That hasn't changed one bit. "If that's any indication, I would say he's right on schedule." - Ann Arbor News
