The Texas Tech football team was anything but desperate for linebackers going into preseason practice. That position features six seniors, five of whom were among the team's top eight tacklers last year. Stalwarts such as Riko Jeffers, Colin Schooler and Krishon Merriweather could play for a lot of teams, and the guys behind them are seasoned veterans, too. On paper, it's no place for anyone young or new to the program to find playing time.

Except Jesiah Pierre might do just that. Few players are wowing the Red Raiders' staff more with their potential and intangibles than the second-semester transfer from Florida. "He's extremely talented," defensive coordinator Keith Patterson said Tuesday. "I hate singling guys out, but I can tell you this: He might be the single most explosive linebacker we have, and that's saying something when you've got (Brandon) Bouyer-Randle, Riko Jeffers, Krishon Merriweather, Colin Schooler, Big Cheetah (Jacob Morgenstern), Tyrique Matthews. "He just gets better every day. Watching his development, it's exciting. He has a very high ceiling, I'll tell you that." Pierre is a sophomore who, because of the 2020 season not counting against any player's eligibility, can suit up for the Red Raiders for four years. He's a 6-foot-2 inside linebacker who runs well. Expecting to see a lot of passing in the Big 12, he trimmed down from the 245- to 248-pound range and now weighs from 230 to 232. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
