Draft Scout College Football Player News

NFL scouts have been prominent at Nevada football fall camp practices in the early going this season, and one of the big reasons for that is Carson Strong. The Wolf Pack's 6-foot-4 strong-armed quarterback has gotten first-round draft-pick buzz this offseason, with one mock draft putting him No. 1 overall. Nevada offensive coordinator Matt Mumme knows what a first overall draft pick looks like because he backed one up during his college playing days. Mumme played for Kentucky from 1997-99, overlapping with Tim Couch for two seasons.

Couch went No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Browns in 1999 following a standout college career under Hal Mumme, one of the inventors of the Air Raid offense and Matt's father. Both Mummes agree Strong is a better pro prospect than Couch, who in 1998 was a consensus All-American, the SEC player of the year and a Heisman Trophy finalist. Matt Mumme said his father, Hal, pegs Strong as a top-10 draft pick. "He thinks he's at least a top 10, and we both agree that he's better than Tim Couch ever was," Matt Mumme told Nevada Sports Net. "That's what I was telling the scouts. If I had somebody to try and compare him to, it'd be Tim Couch because Tim was the one I was around. But Carson is way smarter in football knowledge than Tim ever was, so that's where Carson kind of elevates above some guys." - NevadaSportsnet.com
