  Draft Scout by Conference

It was the first day of the NFL draft. The first round. And former SMU tight end Ryan Becker watched nervously on television. "Like I know I wasn't going in the first round," Becker told The Dallas Morning News. "But still, you're just nervous watching it. Because it's just your future and you have no control over it at that point." Becker started six games last season, catching four passes totaling 30 yards. He often entered the game early and played a lot in the Mustangs' system that typically featured two tight ends.

In his four years with SMU, he made 16 catches. But his physicality and willingness to be a team-first player is what made the Arizona Cardinals want to sign him to an undrafted free agent contract in the hours after the draft ended. Even though Becker didn't have a ton of highlight reel catches, and even though SMU's pro day was wiped out by the coronavirus crisis, he still worked his way into an opportunity. "It's crazy and unbelievable....It's a huge weight lifted off your shoulders," Becker said. "Like I've always told people, all I need is my chance. I just needed a chance. And to finally get that chance and to know that I will put on pads again is a great feeling." - Dallas Morning News
