The University of Utah has its highest-ever preseason ranking. The Utes, 10-4 overall and Pac-12 champions for the first time last season, were slotted at No. 8 in the preseason AFCA Coaches Poll, released on Monday morning. The No. 8 preseason ranking e clipses the program's previous preseason high in either major poll, No. 14 in the AP Top 25 ahead of the 2019 season. That team peaked in early December of that season, getting to No. 5 in the AP and Coaches Polls, plus the College Football Playoff ranki ngs.Last season's Rose Bowl qualifier began the season unranked in the Coaches Poll, but wound up finishing 12th, its highest finish in that poll since the vaunted 13-0 2004 team finished fourth. Kyle Whittingham's program was joined Monday in the poll by fellow-Pac-12 programs Oregon (No. 12) and USC (No. 15). "You have to just embrace them," Whittingham said of managing expectations on Monday afternoon following Utah's fifth fall camp practice. UTEP football returns one of their most important pieces on the offense for 2022. Trent Thompson, a senior tight end, is ready to take his game to the next level for the Miners as they approach the beginning of their season. "He is one of the most import ant guys on our football team," said UTEP head coach Dana Dimel. "He brings so much to the team and is one of our very, very best players on the team and at his position. He's an outstanding blocker, can catch the ball well when he gets his opportunities and just a really physical football player, so we love Trent. He's a really, really important to our ball club." In 2021, Thompson had his best year for the Miners, as he was the team's primary tight end target.He collected nine receptions for 13 3 yards and four touchdowns. Thompson finished his 2021 season on a high note. The product out of Houston, Texas recorded career highs in yards (52) and touchdowns (two) against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. One of his signature moments, was when Thompson was the one on the receiving end of a 51-yard score against the Bulldogs in the bowl game. For 2022, Thompson is aiming to have the best season of his collegiate career. "This is going to be the best year, in my opinion," said Thompson. "You cou ld take my 2020 and 2021 seasons and combine that together. That is what you're going to get a bunch of pancake blocks and hopefully double the amount of touchdowns." - KTSM

2022 PRESEASON ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE: Dalton Kincaid, University of Utah,...Kincaid's 14.2 yards per reception ranked third among tight ends in the Pac-12 while his eight touchdowns ranked third in the Pac-12 overall (first among TEs) and fifth among tight ends in the FBS. He scored at least one touchdown in the final three games of the season. Kincaid's versatility as a tight end became clear early on in 2021 when he went off for a season-high 75 yards on four catches against Weber Stat e in the season opener, scoring two touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown in Utah's win over Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship game. The Las Vegas, Nev., native also was named a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team for his commitment to serving the community. As USC players took turns sitting around fold-out tables at media day last week, each one seemed to have their own off-season accomplishments to brag about. "I lost six pounds of fat, gained five pounds of muscle," center Brett Neilon reported. "I was at like 10 [percent body fat] last year," rush end Korey Foreman said. "Now I'm going into five." The man at the center of these developments and the off-season regimen for USC is strength and conditioning coach Bennie Wylie. Wylie was always a key part of head coach Lincoln Riley's vision for USC. Penn State is in desperate need of production at wide receiver with Jahan Dotson's departure for the NFL. The common line of thinking is that there will be a by-committee approach to make up for the lost receptions and yardage. However, there's a breakou t candidate on the roster who has already proven what he's capable of in some of Penn State's biggest games last season. Wide receiver Parker Washington is dynamic with the ball in his hands and that's going to be the hardest part of Dotson's game to rep lace.The sophomore has the lower body strength to run through tacklers but can make opponents miss with relative ease when he has space. Not to mention, he had nine catches for 108 yards against Ohio State with Dotson on the field and then seven c atches for 98 yards against Arkansas without him. Washington is unlikely to be as good as his predecessor, but he still has a golden opportunity to be the most valuable piece of the offense in 2022. - Centre Times

Defending Big 12 champion Baylor has been picked No. 10 in the USA Today preseason coaches poll. The Bears were among four Big 12 teams to make the poll, joining No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Texas. The Longhorns were the only Big 12 t eam to receive a first-place vote. Alabama was picked No. 1 while receiving 54 of the 66 first-place votes. No. 2 Ohio State received five first-place votes and No. 3 Georgia got six first-place votes. The top three teams were followed by No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 8 Utah. Future Big 12 members No. 22 Cincinnati and No. 25 Houston also made the poll. Arkansas is ranked 23rd in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll that was released Monday. It is the first time the Razorbacks have been ranked in the preseason poll since 2015, when coaches ranked Arkansas No. 20 to open the season. The Razorbacks finish ed that season unranked following an 8-5 overall record, 5-3 record in SEC play and victory over Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl. Arkansas will open the season against Cincinnati, which is ranked No. 22 by coaches. The season-opening game in Fayettevill e will be one of three Week 1 matchups involving a pair of ranked teams in the coaches poll, along with No. 5 Notre Dame at No. 2 Ohio State, and No. 3 Georgia vs. No. 12 Oregon in Atlanta. The Associated Press preseason poll will be released sometime la ter this month. After spending his final high school season in 2020 as one of the state's most coveted prospects, Deontae Lawson did not receive nearly as much attention in 2021. The four-star linebacker from Mobile Christian started Alabama's spring game last year beca use of COVID-19 issues at his position, but then spent the season mostly behind the scenes. He saw action in four games, three of which were non-conference blowouts over Mercer, Southern Miss and New Mexico State. Now a redshirt freshman, Lawson's opport unity for playing time with the Tide could be near.Alabama has an opening at "Will" linebacker after three-year starter Christian Harris was drafted to the NFL this offseason. Fifth-year senior Jaylen Moody was the frontrunner in the spring for th at job, but defensive coordinator Pete Golding on Sunday brought up Lawson as another candidate for the spot. "You've got Moody that's got experience in the system," Golding noted. "You've got Deontae Lawson who obviously had a good spring, had a good su mmer, is having a good fall camp. I think there's a push right there right now." D.J. Matthews is one of the smallest players on Indiana's roster, but no one left a bigger void than the Florida State transfer when he suffered a season-ending knee injury at Western Kentucky in week four last season. Indiana brought in Matthews to fill the opening left by Whop Philyor as the next playmaker in the open field, and the 5-foot-11 and 160-pound Jacksonville, Fla. product was highly productive in a number of ways. Matthews caught 13 passes for 165 yards, returned four punts for 83 yards wit h a career-long, 81-yard touchdown against Idaho, and he rushed twice for 28 yards with a score.Indiana's offense was never a juggernaut in 2021, but in the first four weeks with the shifty Matthews on the field IU scored 119 points. They would on ly produce 88 points over the final eight contests without him. When Matthews went down in a heap on the turf at Western Kentucky as he recovered a muffed punt, in many ways the IU offense crumbled right along with him. That realization once again hit IU coach Tom Allen and his assistants this week as the Hoosiers opened fall camp in Bloomington. "After the first practice, the general consensus of the staff was 'wow, boy did we sure miss D.J. last year," Allen said on Friday via Zoom. "It really, really hurt us last year losing him. Pr octor, who was a part-time starter at free safety in 2020 before being sidelined for most of last season, is likely to be at another spot in the secondary. That's at the boundary safety position known as the "bandit," while Ronnie Hickman steps into the free safety spot as the "adjustor." Tanner McCalister, who followed Knowles in transferring from Oklahoma State, is the favorite to step in as the slot safety, forming the potential trio of starting safeties.The role for Hickman comes with a lot o f responsibilities. Positioned in the middle of the field, he'll cover a lot of safety. And as the nickname suggest, he'll make his share of adjustments to the defense before the snap based on looks from the offense. One year ago, Utah's Cam Rising was still recovering from shoulder surgery and embroiled in a quarterback battle with Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer during fall camp. Brewer won the job but Rising eventually replaced him and led the Utes to the Pac-12 c hampionship and a Rose Bowl appearance. Now, Rising is the Utes' undisputed starter, having earned All-Pac-12 first team honors after completing 204 of 320 passes for 2,493 yards with five interceptions and 20 touchdowns and running 74 times for 499 yard s and six TDs in 2021.That aside, Rising is taking the same approach as he did during last year's fall camp. "It still feels like I have to go out there and prove myself each and every day. It doesn't really matter if it's my job. That just means I'll be getting more (first-team) reps. That's just the way it is," he said. "I've still got to attack it and prove that I'm the best guy for the job each and every day." That's why coach Kyle Whittingham has called Rising an "alpha dog" in the program. "He's one of the hardest workers on the football team, if not the hardest. The Alpharetta, Georgia, native started volunteering at just three years old for Must Ministries, where he began packing lunches for those in need and eventually moving on to deliver those meals at the age of five.
