Hendon Hooker threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead Tennessee to a 59-10 season-opening victory over Ball State Thursday night. Hooker, in his second year as the Volunteers' starter after transferring from Virginia Te ch, had 211 yards passing by halftime along with a 38-0 lead. Eight different receiver caught passes in the first 30 minutes. He was replaced by Joe Milton midway through the third quarter. Jaylen Wright led the Tennessee ground game with 86 yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals' bruising running back Carson Steele was limited to 27 yards on 11 carries. Making his first career start at quarterback for Ball State, redshirt junior John Paddock threw for 269 yards and a TD. He has played in 38 career games for the Orange and Blue posting 166 tack les, 15 TFLs, 7.5 sacks and six pass breakups. The Lakeland, Fla. native also is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient and SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Bowers was arguably the best tight end in the country last season, as a true freshman . It's hard to imagine what he might do in his second season with the Bulldogs if he stays healthy. Along with former Mustang student-athletes Shaine Hailey and Ra -Sun Kazadi and current teammate Sam Westfall, the organization seeks to provide the resources in communities to foster economic, educational, social and personal growth. As part of the Homelessness Initiative, Newman works with Hailey to serve the local Dallas homeless population in a variety of ways. The duo makes meals to distribute in Deep Ellum and Downtown Dallas, and hosts bimonthly volunteer events to pack supply bags to distribute around DFW that include essentials like hygiene supplies, snacks , water and other necessities. - SMU Football
