SEPT 19 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: UAB RB DeWayne McBride had a career-high 223 rushing yards and matched his career highs for carries (28) and touchdowns (four) in UAB's 35-21 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday. McBride averaged 8.0 yards per carry in the victory for the Blazers. In two games this season, McBride has run for 400 yards (200.0/game) and five touchdowns. (St. Rita),...Shine was instrumental in the Eagles' 30-21 victory over the Sun Devils Sept. 17., Perhaps the most important play of the game, Shine forced and collected an ASU fumble with just minutes remaining in the game and with the Sun Devils driving into EMU territory down just nine point. The forced fumble was the second of Shine's career, his first since punching one out agai nst Northern Illinois, Dec. 12, 2020. It was his first fumble recovery since Nov. 27 of the same year, against Central Michigan. Penn State jumped up eight places in this week's USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll thanks to their big win over Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Nittany Lions outscored Auburn, 27-6, in the second half to secure the 41-12 victory. Penn State now sits No. 15 in the poll. Meanwhile, Washington enters the poll for the first time after defeating Michigan State. The Huskies debut at #24. Cam Rising threw for 224 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in three quarters to help No. 14 Utah rout San Diego State 35-7 on Saturday night. Rising is the first Utah quarterback since 2017 to pass for 200 or more yards in the first three games of the season. The Utes (2-1) forced a pair of turnovers and scored touchdowns following both takeaways. Utah totaled 398 yards and held an opponent to a single touchdown for the second consecutive game. The Utes totaled 309 yards over the final three quart ers. "We just couldn't get in a rhythm offensively (in the first quarter)," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "But once we got going and got momentum, the floodgates kind of opened and we put the game away mid-third quarter." San Diego State (1-2) lost s tarting quarterback Braxton Burmeister to an eye injury in the first quarter and never got on track offensively.The Aztecs failed to convert a third down until midway through the third quarter and did not surpass 100 total yards of offense until t he final minute of the quarter. "Braxton got a thumb in the eye," Aztecs coach Brady Hoke said. "It was just black for him at one time and blurred for most of the game. He couldn't see." Third-string quarterback Kyle Crum directed San Diego State for mos t of the final three quarters. He threw for 53 yards and touchdown and also had an interception. Utah roared to life on offense in the second quarter. Rising threw touchdown passes on three consecutive drives to help the Utes take a 21-0 halftime lead. H e got Utah on the board with a 30-yard strike to Brant Kuithe. His second touchdown pass was a 13-yard toss to Solomon Enis in the back of the end zone. Rising capped it off with a 15-yard pass to Devaughn Vele with 20 seconds left in the half. We didn't get the pressure we needed on the QB," Aztecs defensive end Jonah Tavai said. Zack Annexstad threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Illinois State's defense came up with two interception-return scores as the Redbirds stymied Eastern Illinois 35-7 on Saturday. Illinois State (2-1) has won back-to-back contests following a season-opening defeat at Wisconsin. Jeff Bowens intercepted the Panthers' Jonah O'Brien and returned it 40 yards for a score to make it 21-7 with 1:09 left before halftime. Deandre Lamont later picked O'Brien and ran it in from 3 yards out at the beginn ing of the third quarter. Lindsey Scott Jr. threw three touchdown passes and Incarnate Word cruised to a 31-14 victory over Prairie View on Saturday night. Five minutes into the game, Darion Chafin made a two-handed, over-the shoulder 6-yard touchdown catch while falling into the end zone for Incarnate Word (3-0). Scott added another 6-yard score to Taylor Grimes in the first quarter and an 18-yarder to Marquez Perez early in the second. Scott was 31-of-43 passing for 233 yards, and he sat out for most of the fourth quarter. Jar rell Wiley had 92 yards rushing and Isaiah Robinson added 86 yards on the ground. Ahmad Antoine scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and from a yard out in the fourth for Prairie View A&M (1-2). Antoine finished with 86 yards rushing on 14 carries. Richard opened the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown run. Khalil Baker returned an interception for a score, Richard connected with Joaquin Davis for a 34-yard touchdown and North Carolina Central (3-0) led 21-7 after one quarter.Max Brosmer kept New Hampshire (2-1) within striking distance with three first-half touchdown passes — two to D J Linkins — to trail 28-21 at halftime. Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 176 rushing yards and four touchdowns as No. 22 Penn State cruised to a 41-12 win at Auburn on Saturday. The Nittany Lions' freshman running backs were instrumental in the red zone. Penn State (3-0) score d touchdowns on each of its first four trips inside the 20-yard line. Quarterback Sean Clifford passed for 178 yards. The Penn State defense forced four turnovers by Auburn (2-1) and also held Tigers star running back Tank Bigsby to 39 rushing yards. McBride's scoring runs of 1 and 31 yards in the first half helped build a 21-0 lead. He added a 27-yard score in the fourth t o make it 28-14 and a 4-yarder with 4:46 left to cap the scoring. Dylan Hopkins passed for 125 yards and a touchdown for UAB (2-1). The UAB defense intercepted Kyle Vantrease three times - with one apiece from Jaylen Key, Tyler Taylor and Keondre Swoopes . Key returned his interception 45 yards. Vantrease finished 24-of-50 passing for 204 yards and a touchdown for Georgia Southern (2-1). Grayson McCall threw three touchdowns, Coastal Carolina had a key special teams touchdown, and the Chanticleers rallied past Buffalo 38-26 on Saturday. Coastal Carolina scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to erase what was earlier a 19-14 defic it. Jahmar Brown scooped a fumble by the Buffalo punter and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown to give the Chanticleers the lead at 24-19. McCall added two touchdown passes later in the fourth to help Coastal Carolina (3-0) put the game away.The Chanticleers piled up 504 yards of offense and faced third down only eight times, converting three. Although Buffalo was 5-for-5 scoring in the red zone, the Bulls struggled on third down (8 of 20) and settled for four field goals by Alex McNulty. Buffa lo had 337 yards of offense. Both teams had four turnovers. Cole Snyder completed 29 of 48 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bulls (0-3).
