Nick Singleton had 21 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown, Penn State's defense forced three turnovers and the No. 11 Nittany Lions outlasted Northwestern 17-7 on Saturday. Sean Clifford completed 10 of 20 passes for 140 yards with a touchdown and Kaytr on Allen added 86 rushing yards on 21 carries to help Penn State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) stay unbeaten heading into an off week. Both teams struggled early, combining for six turnovers in the first half after heavy rain drenched Beaver Stadium just before kic koff. Penn State coughed up the ball twice on its first three drives. Xander Mueller recovered a Singleton fumble and Bryce Gallagher intercepted Clifford, but Penn State's defense kept the Wildcats (1-3, 1-1) from taking advantage.Northwestern ga ined just 13 yards in the first quarter and gave the ball back when Ji'Ayir Brown intercepted Ryan Hilinski and returned it to midfield. Clifford led a quick, 5-play drive from there, and found tight end Brenton Strange open in the flat. Strange leapt ov er a defender at the goal line to make it 7-0 late in the first. Hilinski didn't complete his first pass until 10 minutes before halftime. Shortly afterward, a bad snap bounced at his feet and Penn State defensive end Nick Tarburton hopped on it. The Nit tany Lions turned that giveaway into points, too, when Singleton plowed in from two yards out seven plays later. Singleton's up and down day continued, with the freshman fumbling again Penn State's next possession when Rod Heard drilled him behind the li ne of scrimmage. Cameron Mitchell recovered for the Wildcats. But they couldn't block Tarburton. - Penn State/AP College Football

Miyan Williams carried the load for No. 3 Ohio State, rushing for a career-high 189 yards and five touchdowns as the Buckeyes beat Rutgers 49-10 on Saturday. Williams got the opportunity for a career-high 21 carries when TreVeyon Henderson became a late scratch because of an unspecified injury. Williams, a third-year back, exploded for a 70-yard TD romp in the third quarter and also had four short scoring plunges. A 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, his fifth of the game, tied an Ohio State record . He's the first back to rush for five touchdowns in a game since Keith Byars in 1984. Pete Johnson also did it in 1974. "Miyan was running hard to day," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. "You know, he turns a 3-yard run into a 5-yard. He just keeps us on schedule. And it was tough down there in the red zone. (Rutgers) kind of dug in a few times. Miyan had a really good day for us." Williams stepped up with the best game of his Ohio State career on a day when quarterback C.J. Stroud wasn't as sharp as usu al.The Heisman Trophy favorite completed 13 of 22 passes for a career-low 154 yards with two touchdown and an interception. Rutgers jumped out a 7-0 lead after Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka fumbled a punt return after the opening drive, setting up a 1 4-yard TD pass from Evan Simon to Sean Ryan. It was the first time the Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) had trailed in a game since going down 3-0 early in the opener against Notre Dame. Ohio State tied it on the next possession when Williams' 32-yard rumble set up his 2-yard TD two plays later. - Ohio State/AP College Football

Despite the season-ending ACL tear he suffered last Saturday in the Utah Utes' win over the Arizona State Sun Devils, tight end Brant Kuithe made his weekly appearance on the "Bill Riley Show" in Salt Lake City by phone on Tuesday, and naturally the inju ry was the topic of conversation. "I'm doing all right," Kuithe said at the top, noting that swelling in his knee has to go down before the surgery to repair it can take place. Despite suffering a leg injury in high school, Kuithe said this is the first time he will have to undergo surgery. "It's all new to me, but trying to embrace it as much as I can and trying to stay positive," he said. "It's really the only thing I can do at this moment." Kuithe said that on the play in which he got injured (the la st of the first quarter), he made the catch and in an attempt to make the ASU defender miss, he tried to spin.As soon as he started to make a cut, he heard a pop. In a lighthearted moment, he said, "I still made him miss, which I guess I could say that I made someone miss with a torn ACL." Nevertheless, he knew something had happened and he tried to get to the sideline as soon as he could. Kuithe said that in a sense, the fact that he can't do anything to change what happened is helping him have a positive outlook about the recovery road ahead. "I kind of have a new perspective on football right now and trying to figure out what I need to do and how I can help this team without being on the field," he said. "Everything's all new and trying to ta ke it one step at a time." He also said he realized quickly that as unfortunate as it is, "I'm alive, you know? Like, I can't sit there and try to think that this is the end of the world, 'cause it's not. "Yeah, I'm missing a season, whatever. I'm not su re what's going to happen down the road (in terms of staying in school or trying to go to the NFL), but at least I'm still alive and I'm breathin' and I still have an opportunity to go play again. It's just another bump in the road, some adversity I have to go through." - Deseret News

Kyle Whittingham's worst fears from Saturday night have been confirmed. The University of Utah football coach on Monday morning announced that senior tight end Brant Kuithe will miss the remainder of the season with a lower leg injury. "That's a big blow to our offense," Whittingham said. "He was a huge part of what we do offensively. But we'll have to have guys step up and and pick up the slack." Whittingham added that if Kuithe wants to return next season, that option is available to him.Junior tight end Thomas Yassmin, who barely started playing American football in 2018, "will take most of the reps that would be typically for Brandt." On the final play of the first quarter, Kuithe came up gimpy after hauling in his second catch of the night, an 11-yard strike from Rising down to the Utah 28-yard line. The three-time All-Pac-12 tight end was helped to the injury tent, where he spent 20 minutes of real time. He peeked his head out of the tent with 5:14 to play in the first half without his sh oulder pads and a towel over his head. Kuithe eventually emerged from the tent with his right knee wrapped in ice before taking crutches and having a seat on the bench. It is unlikely, but Kuithe does have the option to return for a sixth year in 2023 si nce this injury happened in his fourth game and he has not taken a redshirt during his career. - Salt Lake Tribune

Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz delivered unfortunate news for Missouri's offensive line on Tuesday. Zeke Powell, who had been the team's starting right tackle, is out for the season after being injured against Auburn. "He's a tough young man, we're goin g to be here for him," Drinkwitz said. "We're chasing two dreams and we're definitely going to make sure that life outside of the game is taken care of." Powell has no further eligibility, so the injury will effectively end his college football career. - Columbia Daily Tribune
