Central Michigan freshman Bert Emanuel Jr. turned in the best rushing performance by a quarterback in three years when he ran for 293 yards against Buffalo in only his second collegiate game. The Chippewas' coaching staff had wanted to give some playing time to Emanuel, who can play up to four games and still preserve his redshirt. He ran 24 times and finished with 30 snaps in relief of Daniel Richardson in the 31-27 win Wednesday. Of his 293 yards, 274 came in the second half, and he scored on runs of 75, 87 and 1 yards. Emanuel's rushing total was highest by a quarterback since Navy's Malcolm Perry amassed 304 yards on 29 carries against Army in 2019. The week's only other 200-yard game was by Oklahoma's Eric Gray, who went for 211 on 25 carries agai nst West Virginia. - AP College Football

West Virginia fired athletic director Shane Lyons on Monday, a move that comes amid the worst stretch for the football team in more than four decades. President Gordon Gee said there were no immediate plans to make changes under coach Neal Brown. Lyons i s gone after nearly eight years. Gee said in a statement that Rob Alsop, WVU's vice president for strategic initiatives, has been named interim athletic director while a search is ongoing for Lyons' replacement. Brown has a 21-24 record in his fourth sea son, including 4-6 this year. It's the worst stretch since the football team went 17-27 under Frank Cignetti from 1976-79.In September, after West Virginia started the football season 0-2 and fans turned up their criticism of Brown, Lyons said he would take a wait-and-see approach for the remainder of the season. Fans also had criticized Lyons' move to give Brown a contract extension following a 6-4 record in 2020, his only winning season. "We are supporting coach Neal Brown and our team as we co mplete our season over the next few weeks," Gee said in a statement. "We are aware there are some deficiencies, but we have not given up on the coach and the team, and they have not given up on each other. "The evaluation of the football program will be the first task of our new athletic director and no changes will be made until that review has been completed." Lyons was hired in January 2015 to succeed Oliver Luck. He previously served as deputy athletic director at Alabama and as associate commission er of the Atlantic Coast Conference. - AP College Football

Jordan Travis threw for three touchdowns, caught a scoring pass and ran for another score, and No. 25 Florida State beat reeling Syracuse 38-3 on Saturday night, the Orange's fourth straight loss. It was the last conference game for Florida State (7-3, 5 -3 Atlantic Coast Conference), which has won three straight since a midseason skid. The Orange (6-4. 3-3) lost their second straight at home and it was ugly. The Orange notched just nine first downs to 25 for FSU, were 1 of 11 on third-down conversion at tempts, and were outgained 420-160, and the defense was on the field for more than 36 minutes for the third straight game. Florida State entered the game leading the country with 69 plays of 20-plus yards and quickly tacked on another when`Trey Benson bo lted around the left side for 27 on the Seminoles' first possession. Five plays later, Travis scored on a 3-yard run up the middle for a 7-0 lead. Florida State has scored on 13 of 19 first drives of a half this season, with 12 touchdowns.Travis, who was 21-of-23 passing for 155 yards, hit Malik McClain for a 15-yard touchdown late in the first for a 14-0 lead as the Orange struggled offensively despite the return of quarterback Garrett Shrader, who had missed six straight quarters with an undisc losed injury. Shrader finished 6 of 17 for 65 yards with one interception and rushed for minus-2 yards on 10 carries. Syracuse's first three possessions were three-and-outs, and even when the defense snared a turnover the offense failed to capitalze. Tra vis lost a fumble when he was sacked by linebacker Derek McDonald early in the second and Justin Barron recovered for the Orange at the FSU 23. Syracuse then lost 12 yards on the next three plays and Andre Szmyt missed a 53-yard field goal, just his thir d miss in 18 attempts this season and first miss in three tries from 50 yards or longer. The Seminoles struck again late in the second quarter when Travis hit Johnny Wilson for a 24-yard touchdown. Wilson shed a tackle attempt by defensive back Duce Ches tnut along the right side and scooted into the end zone with 5:47 left for a 21-3 lead. - Florida State/AP College Football

Jermaine Brown Jr. had 150 yards and a touchdown to ke ep the Blazers hopes for a bowl berth alive while ensuring the Mean Green didn't qualify for the Conference USA title game.McBride scored on short runs in the first quarter but North Texas (6-5, 5-2) stormed back with three touchdowns and took a 2 1-17 lead at the half. However the Mean Green punted on their next three drives and two fourth quarter drives ended on failed fourth-down conversions. Nick Singleton scored two touchdowns and ran for 113 of his 122 yards in the first half and the defense of No. 14 Penn State smothered Maryland in a 30-0 win on Saturday. Tight end Brenton Strange caught a touchdown pass and Jake Pinegar kicked three fie ld goals for the Nittany Lions (8-2, 5-2 Big Ten, No. 14 CFP), who beat Maryland for the seventh time in nine games since the Terps (6-4, 3-4) joined the Big Ten in 2014. Like the overall series, this one was all Nittany Lions thanks to Penn State's pass rush. Soggy conditions couldn't slow Penn State's front seven. Neither could Maryland's reeling offensive line.Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was hit hard as he threw incomplete on the Terps' first play from scrimmage - an omen of things to come from a Nittany Lion defense that notched seven sacks, seven QB hurries, forced nine punts and three turnovers on down. The Nittany Lions did most of their damage early. They sacked Tagovailoa five times and held Maryland to just 27 total yards be fore halftime. By that point, Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford had put the game out of reach when he threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Strange just 6:08 in. Meanwhile, Singleton lapped Maryland's defense on a pair of fourth-and-inches runs that went f or 45- and 27-yard touchdowns. Pinegar added field goals from 50 and 46 yards to put Penn State up 27-0 at halftime. Pinegar added a 21-yarder midway through the third. Tagovailoa finished 11 for 22 for 74 yards. Roman Hemby led the Terps with 68 rushing yards on 13 carries. - Penn State/AP College Football
