Houston coach Dana Holgorsen says he had never given out a game ball before handing one to defensive back Grant Stuard in the locker room on Saturday. Stuard had 15 tackles, including a touchdown-saving effort to stop a 58-yard run by UConn's Kevin Mensah in the Cougars' 24-17 win over the Huskies. Stuard caught Mensah on Houston's 4-yard line, leading to goal-line stand that preserved a 17-10 lead. Houston (3-4, 1-2 American) had just taken that lead on a 58-yard-touchdown pass from Holgorsen's son Logan to Jeremy Singleton. "You've gotta make them snap it again," said Stuard. "If it's one yard, a half a yard, they've still got to get that yard. They've still got to get that touchdown. And our defense prides itself on playing every single play, regardless of the situation."

The younger Holgorsen threw for 123 yards and had just 37 yards passing before finding Singleton wide open down the left sideline. "I thought he did fine," Dana Holgorsen said of his son, a walk-on freshman making his first start. "He's not fazed on the sidelines. It's not too big for him. He's not wide eyed. He's been there for 19 years now. He's used to me yelling at him." Houston (3-4, 1-2) stretched its lead with a late 13-play touchdown drive that ended with a 2-yard run from Bryson Smith. - Houston/AP College Football

Victor Ulmo gave Chattanooga the lead on a 30-yard field goal with 14 seconds left and the Mocs stayed undefeated in Southern Conference play with a 16-13 win over East Tennessee State. Ulmo missed his first three field goal attempts and an extra point attempt. Two of his missed field goals came in the fourth quarter when they would have broken the 13-all tie for the Mocs (4-3, 3-0). Ailym Ford rushed 31 times for 200 yards and two TDs for Chattanooga.

Ford opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 6-yard run and tied it at 13-all with a 14-yard run in the third. Ulmo missed the extra point on the second touchdown. The Buccaneers (2-5, 0-4) scored all their points in the second quarter. Will Huzzie connected with Trey Mitchell for a 32-yard pass and Tyler Keltner kicked field goals from 29 and 43 yards to make it 13-7. Quay Holmes ran for 81 yards and Huzzie caught six passes for 75 yards for East Tennessee State. - AP College Football

One leader lost. One leader back. As the University of New Hampshire football team surges into the second half of its season on a four-game win streak, one that has it tied atop the CAA standings with James Madison, it continues to promote new players on the defensive side of the ball. The latest casualty was senior safety and captain Pop Lacey, who was scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday after injuring his foot in practice last week. He will not play this Saturday at Delaware. - Sea Coast Online

A week after Gus Cumberlander was hurt against California, tight end Jacob Breeland was unable to return from a first-half leg injury suffered Friday against the Buffaloes. The injury will sideline Breeland for the remainder of the season, Cristobal said Monday. A senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., Breeland leads all tight ends at the FBS level with six touchdowns, including Oregon's first touchdown Friday, prior to the injury. He was generating significant NFL draft buzz, and has on tape for evaluators a career body of work at Oregon that includes 74 receptions for 1,225 yards and 13 touchdowns. "He's a really good player," Cristobal said. "Nowadays these injuries are very fixable. He'll come back and he'll train and we think he's going to play a long time. - Oregon Football

Virginia All-American cornerback Bryce Hall will miss the rest of the season following left ankle surgery. Hall was injured while covering a punt in the second quarter of the Cavaliers' 17-9 loss at Miami on Friday night. The senior had surgery Sunday, and coach Bronco Mendenhall says the recovery timeline is uncertain. Hall last year led the nation is pass breakups with 22 and tied for the lead with 24 passes defended. Mendenhall calls Hall an "amazing" person who has had a "huge impact" on the program. The coach says junior De'Vante Cross will start in Hall's absence. Cross came to Virginia as a quarterback and has also played wide receiver and safety for the Cavaliers. - AP College Football

No. 18 Baylor will be without leading tackler Clay Johnston for the rest of the season after the senior middle linebacker injured his knee on a play where he had an interception. Baylor officials didn't elaborate Sunday, but they confirmed that Johnston had a season-ending injury. Johnston got hurt in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 33-30 double-overtime win over Texas Tech, when the Bears stayed undefeated. He limped off the field and never returned after his interception deep in Baylor territory. His 58 tackles this season are 28 more than any other Baylor player, and he is third in the Big 12 Conference with 9.7 tackles per game. He had 10 tackles Saturday for his fourth consecutive double-digit game. - AP College Football

Dan Ellington threw for 122 yards and a touchdown and added 128 yards rushing while two other Georgia State runners gained more than 100 as the Panthers beat Coastal Carolina 31-21 in a Sun Belt Conference battle Saturday night. Georgia State put up 472 yards of offense and 350 yards rushing while checking Coastal Carolina on 322, including just 105 on the ground. Last week the Panthers set a school record with 722 yards of total offense and 340 yards on the ground in a 52-38 win over Arkansas State.

Seth Paige ran 46 yards for a touchdown and Ellington threw three yards to Cornelius McCoy for a score to put Georgia State (4-2, 2-1) up, 17-6 at halftime. Tra Barnett had touchdowns runs of 26 and 2 yards in the third quarter for a 31-13 lead. Barnett finished with 110 yards on 20 carries and Paige added 104 on 13. Bryce Carpenter was 9-of-14 passing for 118 yards and two touchdowns for Coastal Carolina (3-3, 0-2). - AP College Football

Tua Tagovailoa threw four touchdowns and Alabama's offense kept rolling in the Tide's first game at No. 1 this season with a 47-28 victory over No. 24 Texas A&M on Saturday. Tagovailoa threw his first interception of the season but became Alabama's career passing touchdowns leader with his first one of the game, breaking his tie with A.J. McCarron. The junior now has 81 for his career and leads the nation with 27 on the season. Tagovailoa shrugged off setting the school record to focus on the importance of beating Alabama's first ranked opponent of the season. "You just revert back to your training. I've experience playing at a place like Tennessee, then going to LSU, Ole Miss...Everyone wants to beat Alabama," Tagovailoa said. "We're not done yet, as a team we have to continue to grow."

Alabama (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) trailed briefly when Texas A&M scored a touchdown on its first possession. Tagovailoa then engineered four consecutive scoring drives, which included three touchdown passes that all came on third down, and the Tide were on cruise control against the best pass defense they had faced so far this season. The only blemish was the interception thrown in the Texas A&M end zone late in the second quarter. Tagovailoa spread the scoring around, with all of his TD strikes going to different receivers. His two longest of the day were a 47-yarder to DeVonta Smith in the first quarter and a pinpoint 33-yarder to Henry Ruggs III in the third. "I feel I have a relationship with everyone, a good connection with everyone," Tagovailoa said. Alabama didn't have to punt until there was less than 2 minutes left in the third quarter. Najee Harris rushed for 114 yards. - Alabama/AP College Football
