2020 PRESEASON BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: CB Caleb Farley, Virginia Tech,...Farley (6-2, 207) blossomed into one of the ACC's top cornerbacks in just his second season playing that position after serving as a high school quarterback. A first-team All-ACC pick in 2019, he led the ACC with 16 passes defensed and was amongst the nation's best averaging 1.5 passes defensed per game. He was tied for second in the ACC with four INTs and registered a 17-yard INT return TD in a 45-0 shutout of Georgia Tech (11/ 16). In his annual 2020 College Football Preview released this week, respected author Phil Steele named 11 Temple football players to his All-American Athletic Conference teams. Representing Temple on the first team is defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh. Wide re ceiver Jadan Blue, offensive lineman Vincent Picozzi, and linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley earned second team designations. The third team placed running back Re'Mahn Davis, wide receiver Branden Mack, and offensive lineman Isaac Moore, along with defensi ve tackle Daniel Archibong and linebacker William Kwenkeu. Cornerback Christian Braswell and kicker Will Mobley round out the fourth team. The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given annually to the best defensive player in college football. Two Wahoos made the watch list, and they'll look to become the first UVa winner of the award since its inception in 1995. Both of UVa's players are on the watch list come from the linebacker position. Senior Charles Snowden and junior Noah Taylor made the list. In total, 18 ACC players earned spots on the watch list, including six linebackers from the conference. There are 90 players on the list and 20% of them come from the ACC. That's the most of any conference.Interestingly, Virginia is the only program in the nation to put two linebackers on the list. Snowden finished last season with 72 t ackles, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks. Taylor racked up 57 tackles, including an impressive 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Both players use elite length to disrupt plays. They combined to break up eight passes a season ago, and Taylor finish ed the year with two interceptions. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Jake Hansen missed the final four games of the 2019 Illinois football season with a back injury. What the Illini linebacker did before his season-ending setback, though, was still notable. Notable enough to wind up on the Bednarik Award watch list on Mon day. The Bednarik Award is presented to the top defensive player in the country. Hansen was a Butkus Award semifinalist - the honor given to the nation's top linebacker - in 2019 despite playing in just nine games. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker fini shed his redshirt junior season at Illinois with 72 tackles, 7 1/2 tackles for loss and 3 1/2 sacks. - News Gazette

UGA could have intrigue for the starting quarterback job in 2020 if the college football season is played. Southern Cal quarterback transfer JT Daniels revealed Monday he has gained immediate eligibility to play without having to sit out a season. "Thank you to the NCAA for granting me immediate eligibility and allowing me to play football this fall," Daniels tweeted. "I will not comment on the waiver or transfer, but look forward to a great 2020 season with my teammates."Daniels gives Georgia co ach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken two players who have started for power five conference programs at quarterback to choose from. Wake Forest graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman still probably will be considered the favorite. He joined the program in January and took part in offseason workouts for a couple of months. Daniels didn't arrive in Athens until June. Kennesaw State coach Brian Bohannon and five of his players landed spots on the Big South Conference All-Decade team. The team, announced Monday afternoon, was selected primarily from a vote of conference administrators, with 20 percent of the votes cast by fans. The bad news for the University of Utah is that once mandatory summer activities and training camp begin, coaches still need to figure out who the starting quarterback will be. The good news is, whether it's South Carolina graduate transfer Jake Bentley or redshirt sophomore Cameron Rising, that signal caller is going to have more than a fair amount of pass-catching options. Entering the 2020 season, the Utes return seven players who caught at least 10 passes last season. Chief among them is junior tigh t end Brant Kuithe, whose emergence in the second half of the season was a revelation. His 34 catches for 602 yards and 6 touchdowns as a sophomore mark him as one of, if not the top returning tight end in the Pac-12. Menet will line up between Miranda and Thorpe and is a lock to play every game if he's healthy. He was the Nittany Lions' most consistent offensive lineman in the 2019 season and has taken over as one of the leaders of the room after last season's only s enior starter, Steven Gonzalez, finished his Penn State career. He used his leadership position to help new offensive line coach Phil Trautwein transition to Penn State. "It was very important for me to establish with him," Menet said in a teleconference with the media in May. "I've been around for a little while and become one of the leaders of the room. If I'm not bought in, it would've been a little bit harder for him to transition to coaching (us)."The 6-foot-4, 302-pound center was the No. 1 offensive guard in the 247Sports Composite player rankings in the 2016 class and has excelled in his move further inside. He's a high-level athlete for the position and moves well in the run game when he has to get downfield. Menet's at his best inside because he doesn't have great length, but his intelligence and leadership make him an ideal player to call out the team's protections, just as he did last season. D'Eriq King only has gotten to practice with the Miami Hurricanes a handful of times. He got to participate in winter workouts shortly after he transferred from the Houston Cougars, then got to participate in four spring practices before the COVID-19 pan demic forced them to shut down. In the past few weeks, he has gotten work out on Coral Gables again, too. He only needed one practice to pick out who the biggest "freak" on the roster was, and it's not necessarily the obvious choice. "Cam Harris, the run ning back," King said in an appearance on Siriux XM's "Packer and Durham" on Wednesday.Mark Packer, one of the two hosts of the ACC Network-simulcasted show, asked King who had stood out to him so far. "Who is the one guy that you go, 'You know wh at? That guy is a freak?'" he asked. The quarterback singled out his likely starting running back. "When I first saw him run, when I first got there for my first workout I was like, 'Whoa, this guy's this big, running that fast?'" King said. Another TCU football player has ended his playing days because of medical reasons. Reserve offensive lineman Ian Burnette has walked away from the game, multiple sources confirmed Monday. Backup quarterback Matthew Baldwin ended his career last week. Bur nette, a three-star prospect out of Wimberley and part of TCU's 2018 recruiting class, never played in a game for the Horned Frogs. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2018, and sustained a season-ending injury last year. Burnette wasn't expected to comp ete for a starting job in 2020, but would have provided interior depth. Wes Harris and Quazzel White are two returners who started at guard last season. In addition to the issues the group encountered on the field, Washington State's defensive secondary took a few sizable hits off the field last season, diminishing in numbers when two players - most notably starting defensive back Daniel Isom - were dism issed from the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Under the new leadership of first-year coach Nick Rolovich, Isom has found his way back onto the roster and will return to the Cougars this fall, a school official confirmed to The Spokesman -Review Monday. There had been a trail of hints the last few months suggesting Isom's return to the team, beginning with various social media posts from teammates welcoming the St. Louis native back. Freiermuth is Penn State's best returning offensive player and a potential first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The junior tight end contributed in all facets of the previous iterations of the Nittany Lion offense and should do the same under new offe nsive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca. He's a big, versatile target in the passing game who can play attached to the line and detached from it in the slot. Freiermuth is a good athlete and precise route runner in the middle of the field. Once he has the ball in his hands, the junior tight end uses his physicality and athleticism to break tackles in the open field. He's no slouch in the run game, either. Freiermuth is strong enough to help the Nittany Lion offensive tackles on double teams and sound enough te chnically to take on linebackers and help create rushing lanes.There are signs that Freiermuth could see a drop in production this year. Ciarrocca rarely used his tight ends in the passing attack at Minnesota and relied heavily on the position as an extra blocker. The Golden Gophers had three tight ends combine for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 10 catches in the 2019 season. Freiermuth blew those numbers out of the water on his own last year. He hauled in 43 passes for 507 yards and seven touchd owns as Penn State's starter at the position. Those concerns made their way to Freiermuth, who quickly quelled them when he spoke with the media during the spring. "I love the new offense," Freiermuth said in May. "I guess you guys will have to find out about how they're going to use me. I know, and the coaches know, but I'm not going to leak too many details out. Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker is back on campus looking to pick up where he left off. The Hokies started voluntary workouts on June 16, but Hooker was one of the players that left campus back in March and wasn't brought back until last week. Be fore the COVID-19 pandemic turned the sports world upside down, Hooker went into the offseason looking to build on his successful stint as starter. He helped turn Tech's 2019 season around going 6-2 under center with 1,900-plus total yards and 18 touchdo wns. Hooker focused his early efforts on further cementing himself as a locker room leader by frequently popping into the weight room to support his teammates before and after his own workout. Tech's strength and conditioning staff split the team up into three groups for the winter offseason conditioning program.On one particular 'big squat Friday' in February, Hooker worked out in the early morning and was back in the weight room a couple hours later for the afternoon weight-lifting session to c heer on the likes of Maxx Philpott, Austin Cannon, Keshon Artis and Brock Hoffman lift upwards of 600 pounds. When the team parted ways a few weeks later, Hooker returned home to Greensboro where his focus shifted from building camaraderie to staying phy sically prepared while the team was apart. "He was always comparing what he would be doing back on campus (in a normal year)," Hendon's father Alan said in a phone interview with The Roanoke Times. "He was training hard, he was pushing himself because he was worried he wasn't doing enough. Voluntary workouts for returning University of Virginia football players will begin July 5, the school's athletic department announced Friday. Required activity will begin July 15 and allow players to work for no more than eight hours, including weight t raining, conditioning and film review. That will increase to 20 hours from July 26-Aug. 8, with fall camp to start one day later. There will be an acclimatization period before a 25-day fall practice period gets under way. Virginia's season begins Sept. 7 against Georgia in Atlanta."Protocols and plans for student-athletes' return have been coordinated through the UVa Health System, which has collaborated with officials at the local, state and national levels," the UVa news release stated. A "paddle out" celebration of life for former USC and NFL lineman Max Tuerk will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point. Tuerk died last Saturday during a hike with family members in the Cleveland National Forest not far from their home in Trabuco Canyon. He was 26. Autopsy results are pending. Tuerk's parents said they have donated his brain to Boston University's CTE Center. CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a neurodegenerative disease found in people who have suffere d repeated head trauma. That can be diagnosed only after death. - Los Angeles Times
