Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente announced third-year sophomore Nasir Peoples will miss the 2020 season on Wednesday. The 6-foot, 195-pound safety suffered an undisclosed injury during practice. "Really unfortunate non-contact injury," Fuente said in a virtual press conference on Wednesday. "He's been making huge strides." The defender played in 12 games last season with most of his reps coming on special teams. He played three games as a true freshman and recorded two tackles, but redshirted. Fuente n oted that Peoples is the only player as of now expected to miss the opener with an injury. "Knock on wood, we've been in pretty good shape," Fuente said. "Not that we haven't had our issues but nothing like what Nasir's dealing with." Peoples has played an important role this year in helping former Archbishop Wood high school teammate Raheem Blackshear adjust to Blacksburg. The Philadelphia natives won a state title together in 2016 and Blackshear spoke about their close relationship on Wednesday. - Roa noke Times

Duke's offensive line took a huge hit Wednesday when it was announced starting center Jack Wohlabaugh has been ruled out with a knee injury. Wohlabaugh, a 6-4, 305-pound senior, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to the right knee, the school said and will need surgery. Duke also announced redshirt sophomore cornerback Ken Torain will be out of action indefinitely and will need surgery for an injured right shoulder. Wohlabaugh started nine games last season before suffering a season-ending an kle injury that required surgery. Duke's best offensive lineman, he earned honorable mention All-ACC honors in 2019.Wohlabaugh, from Akron, Ohio, is a former transfer from Ohio State. He took over as Duke's starting center during the 2018 season a fter an injury to Zach Harmon and remained the starter after Harmon's return. Duke scored 40 or more points in five games in 2018, tying a school record for a season. Wohlabaugh received the Dan "Tiger" Hill Award as the team's most outstanding offensive lineman and the Sonny Falcone Award for his commitment to strength training and conditioning in the 2019 season. - Herald Sun

The injury bug hit BYU in a big way Monday when senior tight end Matt Bushman was lost for the season to a lower-leg injury, as confirmed by the Cougars in a statement on Tuesday. It was a tough blow for his teammates, particularly those fellow seniors w ho have dealt with their own devastating injuries. "Honestly, it's an emotional topic," BYU senior safety Troy Warner said during Tuesday's media teleconference. "Matt Bushman is one of the greatest guys I've ever met, one of the greatest players I've ev er played with. For him to go through what he is going through, I kind of feel him in a sense because I've had a major injury. But for him to be a senior and be going through this right now, it's tough. We're just trying to do anything and everything we can to be there for him during this time. He is in our prayers. He is huge to this family and I know he'll contribute anyway he can this year."Cougar senior defensive back/linebacker Zayne Anderson echoed similar sentiments and said ever since he saw Bushman get hurt he felt a pit in his stomach. "You feel for him, for his wife Emily and everyone in the family," Anderson said. "You see how these guys work. I don't think a lot of people know what it is like to go down for the whole season with an injury, so when they go through it you feel the pain with them. UCA's top two receivers, junior Lujuan Winningham and sophomore Tyler Hudson combined for 105 receptions that went for 1,789 yards and 20 touchdowns a year ago. Both earned All-Southland Conference and underclassmen All-America honors. UCA played the ent ire 2019 season without two of its top performers. WR Brandon Myers, the top returning receiver for the Bears a year ago, dislocated his kneecap in the third practice of fall camp and missed the entire season. DB Jackie Harvell never recovered enough fro m achilles surgery in the spring and sat out the entire season. On top of that, WR Lujuan Winningham broke his arm in Game 8 vs. Sam Houston State. He was one of the top receivers in the nation at the time with 50 catches for 814 yards and 8 touchdowns. Clark said he and Sutton talked over the past couple of weeks. Clark said that even if Sutton were to play, he wouldn't have been ready for the season opener against Charlotte. Sutton tore an ACL against Texas State last season. Now, Clark said, Sutton h as more time to rehab and get healthy. Sutton spent his first college football season at Kansas State in 2016, then opted to transfer to App State before the 2017 season, which he sat out due to NCAA transfer rules. But when he was eligible to play with App State, he immediately made an impact. Sutton had 10 touchdown receptions in 2018, becoming the first App State wide receiver with double-digit TD catches since Brian Quick in the 2011 season. Last year, playing only nine games, he nearly matched his 2018 reception total (41 receptions to 44 previously) under then-head coach Eli Drinkwitz. He had eight catches and 173 yards and three touchdowns at Georgia State the week before the knee injury. Sutton's father, Clarence, was a safety at App State from 1993 to 1995. Having Bushman out for what could be 4-6 months will greatly change the Cougars' plans as they are less than a week away from the season opener at Navy, Sept. 7. In early August, offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said he had seen great improvement from B ushman. "Guys that are coming back for their senior year, sometimes they improve a little and sometimes they take a big jump - and I've really been impressed with the jump that he's taken," Grimes said. "He's had great ball skills since the day that he p robably first touched the ball, so that's never been an issue for him, but running good routes and becoming a consistent blocker have been two things that I can see he's worked on a lot. He looks stronger to me. He looks more fluid. And I think he's doin g both of those things better." Bushman led the team in receiving yards each of the last three years and joined Gordon Hudson and Dennis Pitta as the only BYU tight ends with three consecutive 500-yard seasons. In 2019, Bushman posted 47 receptions, 688 yards and four touchdowns. With Bushman out for an undisclosed amount of time, Isaac Rex will move into the starting position. - Salt Lake Tribune

Duke has lost returning starting center Jack Wohlabaugh to a serious knee injury along with reserve cornerback Ken Torain. The school announced the injuries Wednesday, saying that both players are out indefinitely. Wohlabaugh is one of four returning sta rters to the offensive line, but he suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament in Tuesday’s practice. The school is determining surgery details. Former starting defensive end Glen Logan has moved inside to tackle, and it's possible that he pushes for starting time. How ever, Siaki "Apu" Ika is more built like Shelvin. A powerful former nose tackle listed at 6-foot-3, 346 pounds, Ika shared Shelvin's struggle to keep his playing weight down, but he showed promise in 13 games last season with 17 tackles and 1½ tackles f or loss. Orgeron has also repeatedly praised true freshmen Jacobian Guillory and Jaquelin Roy, both four-star recruits who were going to see plenty of playing time anyway. Before the pandemic shook the college football world, BYU tight end Matt Bushman made the decision to forego the NFL Draft and come back to Provo for his final season. COVID-19 threatened BYU's schedule, but the Cougars have found a way to play. But the season is over for Bushman. BYU confirmed the senior would be sidelined this season on Tuesday. There are those already placing an asterisk on the 2020 college football season due to the cancellations by the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences. Of course, the 2019 season bore somewhat of an asterisk for Alabama, which missed out on the College Football Playoff for the very first time. Four days before the Crimson Tide opened with a blowout of Duke in Atlanta last August, they lost inside linebacker Dylan Moses for the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Moses, who was a Butkus Award finali st as a sophomore in 2018, decided to return to Tuscaloosa for a redshirt junior season and is ready to make amends. "I want to put the punctuation to the back end of my career here at Alabama," Moses said recently on a Zoom call. "At the same time, I wa nt to affect my teammates. That's the reason I came back. I care about them and I love them, and I want us to get back to how it used to be." Moses promises he won't be cautious during his return, which will be the Sept. 26 opener at Missouri. "It's been a long process," he said. "I was trying to rush that process, but my body kept telling me, 'No.' Now I feel great, and I don't have any second thoughts." - Austin American-Statesman
