UTSA is off to its best start since 2017, and a lot of that has to do with quarterback Frank Harris. Through two games, Harris has accounted for 593 yards and seven total touchdowns. While he has been efficient passing the ball (68.7% completion percenta ge, 448 yards, two touchdowns), Harris has done a majority of his damage on the ground. He's second on the team in rushing with 155 yards and has scored a team-high five rushing touchdowns. - Daily News Journal

On WQAM's Hurricane Hotline, Diaz made a good point in explaining one under-the-radar reason for Cam'Ron Harris' improvement this season: "Cam's work in the weight room has allowed him to maintain his speed throughout the course of a [long] run." On his 75-yard run on Saturday, "he would have been pushed out of bounds three quarters of the way last year. He hit 23 mph on our GPS" on that run. Otis Reese, a former Georgia defensive back, is fighting for immediate eligibility at Ole Miss after his January transfer. Reese posted a letter to Twitter on Tuesday night alleging that he was manipulated by head coach Kirby Smart and his staff, adding that Georgia opposed his request to the NCAA for eligibility to play this season. Reese also said in the tweet that his time at Georgia took a "devastating mental toll" on him because of "aggressive" harassment by campus police. He also recounted racist behavior by students on campus and said there was a lack of response by the UGA coaching staff."From my first moments I stepped on campus," Reese wrote. "It was not what I expected. The racist events that I kept experiencing weighed on me heavily and seemed never ending." Tom Mars, a lawyer who has become involved in many of the eligibility cases around college football players, responded to Reese's letter. Mars runs Mars Law Firm, based out of Atlanta and Rogers, Arkansas. "Kirby Smart's unequiv ocal support would have caused the NCAA to rubber stamp Otis' waiver request," Mars wrote. When Rhett Lashlee arrived as UM's offensive coordinator in January, he knew he had a solid lead running back in Cam'Ron Harris. But he didn't know he had this - a player who has been more impactful than nearly any other running back in the country two w eeks into the season. I asked Lashlee if Harris is even better than what he expected after watching Harris' film in January and February. "When I first got here, Cam seemed like a solid back," Lashlee said. "Four days of spring ball he really impressed m e. He's faster than what I thought he was, more explosive than what I thought he was. First two games, he has shown flashes of that. Really glad he has had a strong first two games." Not only is Harris third in the country in rushing yards at 268, but hi s 10.3 average - bolstered by two long TD runs - places him fourth in yards per carry. SEPT 21 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: UTSA junior QB Frank Harris accounted for 373 yards and three touchdowns to help lead UTSA to a 24-10 victory over Stephen F. Austin in the home opener last Saturday. The junior quarterback completed 2 3-of-36 passes for a career-high 269 yards and a touchdown and he also rushed for 104 yards and a pair of scores, as the Roadrunners racked up 498 yards of offense. A product of Schertz, Texas, he became the first UTSA QB with two career 100-yard rushing games under his belt. Through two games, Harris has thrown for 438 yards and two touchdowns on 48-of-67 passing (68.7%) and rushed for 155 yards and five scores to help guide UTSA to its first 2-0 start since 2017. He is now tied atop the FBS in rushing (5) and total (5) touchdowns and he ranks second in points responsible for (42). - Conference USA Football

Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders says he will become Jackson State's football coach. Sanders made the announcement Sunday night on the first episode of the "21st & Prime" podcast with Jamie Dukes on Barstool Sports. The player known as "Prime Time" during his career added, “Isn't the time? Isn't this the moment? Isn't this what's needed? It's a match made in heaven." Currently the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School-Cedar Hill in Texas, it will be Sanders' first head coaching job at the college level. "I've been offered pro jobs," Sanders added, "so people know I could be an assistant in any college." The move was first reported by the Clarion Ledger in Mississippi.The Southwestern Athletic Conference has scheduled a Monday news conference to make an announcement about the football program. On the podcast, Jackson State President Thomas Hudson called the hiring “the grace of God” and cited the football's program history in being able to land Sanders. "These things just come together," Hudson added, crediting athletic director Ashley Robinson and alumni. "We're just so very fortunate to really be in this space and have a man like this joining us." Frank Harris ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead UTSA to a 24-10 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. Harris accounted for 373 of the Roadrunners' 498 yards of offense, His 23-yard quarterback draw gave UTSA (2-0) a 14-point lead with just over seven minutes to play. He had a 3-yard TD run and tossed a 4-yard pass to Joshua Cephus for a 17-0 lead 35 seconds before halftime. The lead was cut to 10 only seconds later when Trae Self hit Xavier Gibson with a 10-yard TD pass. A 45-yar d pass from Self to Remi Simmons set up the touchdown. Harris had 104 yards rushing on 17 carries and a career-high 269 in the air on 23-of-36 passing with an interception. Sincere McCormick added 98 yards rushing. Hunter Duplessis kicked his 13th straig ht field goal. Self finished with 285 yards on 21-of-33 passing with Gibson making six catches for 94 yards. - AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start and Coastal Carolina beat Campbell 43-21 on Friday night. C.J. Marable and Shermari Jones each had short touchdown runs in the first quarter and Jaivon Heiligh added a 21-ya rd touchdown grab in the second to give CCU a 21-3 lead. Reese White made it 28-9 in the third with another short TD run. Marable finished with 53 yards and two touchdowns for Coastal Carolina (2-0), which beat Kansas 38-23 last week. Marable entered nee ding 83 yards to reach 3,000 career rushing yards. The Chanticleers aren't scheduled to play again until Oct. 3. C.J. Freeman ran for 81 yards and one touchdown for Campbell (0-2), which has a four-game schedule before the Big South Conference plans to s tart in the spring. Brooks Stadium, which holds 20,000, had a limited capacity of fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Penn State football will have its star tight end for the 2020 season, after all. Despite reports of the contrary, Pat Freiermuth will play this fall season, he said Wednesday in a quick appearance on the Big Ten Network. The Athletic's Audrey Snyder firs t reported his decision to play this season. The junior previously made the decision to not play, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Centre Daily Times, after it appeared the season would not begin until November at the earliest. On his BT N appearance, Feiermuth acknowledged having conversations with coach James Franklin about the pros and cons of sticking with the team, but denied ever opting out of the season. Sophomore defensive end Tyree Wilson has been granted an NCAA waiver that makes the former Texas A&M transfer immediately eligible to play for Texas Tech. Texas Tech announced the waiver Wednesday, four days after its season-opening win over Houston Bapt ist. Wilson will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at the Big 12 school. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound Wilson played 12 games as a redshirt freshman for Texas A&M last season, when he had 12 tackles. As the top-ranked pro-style quarterback for the class of 2020, five-star prospect D.J. Uiagalelei had plenty of options in regards to where he would play college football. They included most of the top programs in the country, such as Alabama, Georgia, L SU, Ohio State and Clemson. The California native could have gone to a place where he would have had a good shot of earning the starting QB job as a true freshman. Instead, Uiagalelei did the opposite, going to a place where he knew he would have to wait his turn, barring an injury. But Uiagalelei views the chance to play behind Trevor Lawrence as a blessing and not a hindrance.The 6-foot-4, 250 pounder is learning everything he can from Lawrence in their one season together, before Lawrence leav es for the NFL. "For me, if there was a quarterback like Trevor, coming here and being able to learn from him, that's a bigger accomplishment than going into a place and starting Day 1," Uiagalelei said. "I'm right behind the best quarterback in the coun try and the best player. For me, I get to pick his brain and see how he does it and just learn from him." Redshirt freshman quarterback Grayson McCall was impressive in his first collegiate start at Kansas on Saturday, and he'll have more opportunities to impress as the season progresses. McCall beat out experienced juniors Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter to earn the season-opening start and lead the Chanticleers to a 38-23 win over the Jayhawks. CCU coach Jamey Chadwell said the job is now his to lose. "We compete all the time, but it's his job," Chadwell said. "He earned that job and we're going to ride w ith him through the ups and downs of a freshman quarterback." As a redshirt freshman, Chadwell is not making McCall available to the media for now. But McCall spoke to CCU's sports information department following Saturday's win. "It's a really good star t to the season," he said. "A lot of sacrifices up to this point for us to even just be able to play this game, so I'm really proud of the team and we're going to build on it and keep going."McCall completed 11 of 18 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns, and added 73 yards and two scores on 11 carries. He completed passes to six different players and led the offense to 318 yards and no turnovers. "It's one game, so I wouldn't say he's special right now," Chadwell said. "He played one game an d did well. He could go out and lay an egg and you'll ask me why I'm playing him Friday. Norvell confirmed senior receiver D.J. Matthews has entered the transfer portal with intent to leave the program. "Sometimes when you go through transitions, there are some things that fit better than others and D.J.'s making a decision for his future an d we fully support him in that decision," Norvell said of the move, which was first reported by AL.com and 247Sports.com. Matthews, who started 15 games, has been absent from the team after he spoke out on social media about Florida State's handling of C OVID-19 safety protocol. Norvell told reporters last week he hadn't been in touch with the senior in several weeks. Matthews ranked second on the FSU roster in receiving last season with 36 catches for 355 yards and three touchdowns.
