10/28/20 - TE *Pat Freiermuth, Jr/2021, Penn State + More +   Almost forgotten Saturday in the disappointment of defeat for Penn State in its season-opening overtime loss to Indiana was a career-defining accolade for redshirt junior tight end Pat Freiermuth. On the Nittany Lions' first drive of the contest, Freiermuth hauled in a 2-yard touchdown from redshirt junior quarterback Sean Clifford. The score put Penn State on the board first, but more significantly, it was Freiermuth's 16th career touchdown catch. It allowed him to break former star tight end Mike Gesicki's record for the most career touchdowns by a tight end in program history. Freiermuth didn't speak about the record hours after the loss on Saturday, but he's since had time to reflect on his accomplishment. Now, the 2019 All-Big Ten selection is out to help the Nittany Lions get back on track as they get set to take on Ohio State on Saturday. "I'm thankful and appreciative for the whole program and the whole staff who helped me get to this point of being able to break that record," Freiermuth said Tuesday. "It's a great honor to be a record-holder at Penn State in such a great, established program. I'm always going to be blessed to be a part of this program." But head coach James Franklin said he believes Freiermuth would've traded breaking the record for a "different result" on Saturday. "For us, with team success comes individual recognition," Franklin said. "I think that's how our players approach it, and I think that's how the staff approaches it. For us, it's everything we possibly can do to get a win." Freiermuth didn't spend much time basking in the glory of his milestone, either. 10/27/20 - TE Erick All, rSr/2024, Iowa + More +   Erick All's dropped touchdown pass in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Minnesota caught many on the Michigan sideline by surprise. The sophomore tight end has a reputation for catching anything thrown his way in practice, a trait that helped him get onto the field as a true freshman in 2019. So when offensive coordinator Josh Gattis called the very next play for All, a short flip pass to him behind the line of scrimmage, he made the most of it by picking up 23 yards for a first down. "I was just way too excited," All told reporters Monday over a video conference call. "I felt like the coaches knew that. If it weren't for that second opportunity, it probably would have been in my head. I felt like the coaches knew that they had confidence that I don't really drop balls, for real. "I just thank God that the coaches believed in me and I was able to get out there for the second play and do what was right." Head coach Jim Harbaugh called All one of the "unheralded" offensive players in Michigan's 49-24 win over the Golden Gophers, praising his blocking for helping set free some of those big plays. All got the start - the first of his career - after Nick Eubanks was unavailable to Michigan. "His blocking was phenomenal," Harbaugh said Monday. "In line, on the perimeter - just tremendous. He had the opportunity for the touchdown. It was just so natural for him catching, that he pulled his head away just as the ball was coming in. He just expects to catch everything - and always does." 10/27/20 - QB Graham Mertz, rSr/2025, Florida + More +   No. 9 Wisconsin has canceled its game at Nebraska on Saturday and paused all team activities for at least seven days after a dozen people within the program including coach Paul Chryst tested positive for COVID-19. School officials said athletic director Barry Alvarez and chancellor Rebecca Blank made the decision in consultation with Big Ten officials. The game with Nebraska won't be rescheduled. 10/25/20 - QB Graham Mertz, rSr/2025, Florida + More +   Wisconsin says nobody who played in the season opener Friday night tested positive for COVID-19 or reported having any symptoms beforehand, amid weekend reports that quarterback Graham Mertz has tested positive. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal reported Mertz would be taking a second test to determine whether his first test was a false positive. The Journal-Sentinel reported Mertz's positive test came Saturday, one day after the Badgers' 45-7 home victory over Illinois. School officials say they won't release any testing information regarding individual athletes due to privacy concerns. Big Ten protocols say that athletes who test positive through point-of-contact daily testing must take a polymerase chain reaction test to confirm the first result. If that second test confirms a positive result, the athlete can't play again for at least 21 days. Smith, a freshman defensive back for the Wildcats, tweeted Saturday that he'll miss the rest of the season. Smith wrote that he found out Oct. 16 that he had torn his ACL and wouldn't be able to play another game this fall. "At first I thought why me, but God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers," Smith wrote. "I hate not being out there with my brothers, but I know they'll hold it down. I'll be back 100x better." Smith had appeared in K-State's first four games this season as a reserve safety. He finishes this season with seven tackles (five solo, two assisted). 10/25/20 - OLB Grant Stuard, Sr/2021, Houston + More +   Navy's Brigade of Midshipmen gave the University of Houston an earful during Saturday's game and, apparently, one text message after. "The cadets were talking a whole bunch of mess," UH linebacker Grant Stuard said after the 37-21 win. "One of them texted my phone somehow after the game." Asked if Navy possibly used the National Security Agency (NSA), which is located less than 30 minutes from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, to obtain his number, Stuard chuckled. "I don't know what they did," he said. Saturday's game was the first on the road for the Cougars during the coronavirus pandemic. 10/24/20 - TE Dakota Allen, rSr/2023, Eastern Kentucky + More +   Backup Dakota Allen threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Matt Wilcox Jr. with six seconds remaining and Eastern Kentucky rallied to beat Central Arkansas 31-28 on Saturday. Breylin Smith hit Tyler Hudson with a 50-yard pass to the EKU 2 then scored himself with 1:42 remaining to give Central Arkansas (3-4) its first lead of the game. Allen then led the Colonels (2-4) 77 yards on eight plays with the aid of two personal foul penalties and a fourth-down completion to keep the drive alive before finding Wilcox alone in the end zone. Allen came on after starter Parker McKinney was knocked out of the game after a hard hit seconds before the end of the first half. McKinney threw for 216 yards and two touchdown passes for a 17-7 halftime lead. Allen had a 7-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter before the Bears scored twice to take the lead. Self's 16-yard scoring pass to Chad Aune in the extra session served as the game winner. Blair Zepeda's 35-yard field goal in overtime gave the Wildcats their last lead at 32-29. Stephen F. Austin (3-3, 1-0 Southland Conference) scored two touchdowns, one with 2:23 left in regulation and the other with 51 seconds left to force overtime. Abilene Christian (0-3, 0-1) scored with 98 seconds left when Tyrese White ran it in from 3-yards out, and the 2-point conversion made it 29-22 in favor of the Wildcats. The team said the freshman would miss the game with Gerogia Southern on Saturday because of an upper body injury. Backup and former starter Fred Payton will open at quarterback. McCall is from Indian Trail, North Carolina, and has been a big reason for the Chanticleers' rise this season. He leads the Sun Belt Conference in passing efficiency with 11 touchdowns against one interception for Coastal Carolina (4-0). 10/24/20 - ILB *Dylan Moses, rJr/2021, Alabama + More +   The Lott IMPACT Trophy, given to the nation's top defensive player for both his performance and character, will have six finalists instead of the usual four and will be presented in February. The finalists will include one each from the Power 5 conferences and one at-large finalist from the other Division I conferences. Three semifinalists from each league will be chosen on Nov. 18 and one finalist from each conference will be named on Jan. 7. The award, sponsored by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, is usually given in December. It will be presented on Feb. 21 in Newport Beach, California. The changes were the result of the coronavirus. The winner receives $25,000 for the general scholarship fund of his school. 10/23/20 - QB Graham Mertz, rSr/2025, Florida + More +   Graham Mertz threw five touchdown passes to match the Wisconsin record in a commanding first career start and the No. 14 Badgers beat Illinois 45-7 on Friday night to open the pandemic-delayed Big Ten football season. Mertz set a school record for completion percentage on 20-of-21 passing, finishing with 248 yards. The lone incompletion was a pass that running back Garrett Groshek dropped midway through the third quarter. The redshirt freshman quarterback delivered a buzzworthy performance during the Big Ten’s long-awaited opening night. The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 that it would postpone all fall sports until the spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, then reversed itself Sept. 16 by saying it would begin the season in mid-October. While most other conferences began playing last month in front of partially filled stadiums, Wisconsin had cutouts in the stands and piped-in crowd noise Friday as it began its nine-game schedule. But his prime-time outburst still earned raves on social media from a wide range of players including Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and former Wisconsin star J.J. Watt. Mertz became the first-team quarterback after returning starter Jack Coan underwent foot surgery on Oct. 7, leaving him out indefinitely. He wasted no time making the most of his opportunity. The only previous Wisconsin quarterbacks to throw five touchdown passes in a game are Darrell Bevell against Nevada in 1993 and Jim Sorgi against Michigan State in 2003. Mertz was 14 of 14 for 190 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone as Wisconsin built a 28-7 halftime lead. 10/23/20 - RB Journey Brown, rSr/2022, Penn State + More +   Less than a month ago, Penn State standout running back Journey Brown was all smiles on a Zoom conference call with reporters during the Nittany Lions' virtual media days. The redshirt junior spoke about his new role as a leader for the team's running backs room and his goals to make even greater strides this season after finishing with 890 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns last year. But since then, a lot has changed. Penn State confirmed Monday night that Brown could potentially miss the 2020 season due to an undisclosed medical condition discovered this offseason. Still, Brown's presence - even if it won't be felt on the field - will be an important part of the Penn State locker room this fall. "His leadership on our team is significant," head coach James Franklin said Tuesday. "His leadership on our team is needed. His energy, he's been phenomenal...We're not losing Journey the man. Journey the man is going to be with us and will always be. We're fortunate because that's the thing that's most important to me - who he is and what he represents for our program." In his three years at Penn State, Brown has been known to have a goofy personality and make his teammates laugh with jokes and pranks. Shrader later confirmed the news via an announcement on Twitter. Recruited by the Joe Moorhead regime, Shrader arrived at MSU as a four-star prospect in the class of 2019. As a freshman, the Charlotte native split time with Penn State transfer Tommy Stevens throughout his inaugural campaign in Starkville, completing 88 of 153 passes for 1,170 yards and eight touchdowns.
