He finished 30-of-41 passing for 342 yards and two touchdowns, and he opened the second half with a 30-yard touchdown run. The way he handled Clemson's first drive was particularly impressive. After the Eagles stormed down the field in four plays to score, Uiagalelei orchestrated a six-play, 65-yard drive capped by a smart throw to running back Travis Etienne against the blitz. Etienne sprinted into the end zone for 35 yards. "He's incredibly poised," Swinney said. 11/03/20 - WR Romeo Doubs, Sr/2022, Nevada + More +   Wolf Pack receiver Romeo Doubs averaged more than 31 yards per reception against UNLV on Saturday. Two weeks into the Mountain West football season, it's fair to ask, "Who is going to stop Romeo Doubs?" Well, it won't be UNLV. Nevada's junior receiver ran past the Rebels' secondary Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium - often literally - and finished as the game's biggest difference-maker. Officially, he caught seven passes for 219 yards and one touchdown, a 65-yard strike from quarterback Carson Strong in the second quarter that pushed the Wolf Pack's lead to 17-6. Unofficially, he was a distraction all night for the UNLV defense, which had no choice but to keep him under heavy watch. It wasn't a breakout game for Doubs, who actually scored a touchdown the first time he touched the ball as a college player (a punt return against Portland State in the 2018 opener). In his two-plus seasons at Nevada, he's had monster games against the likes of Colorado State (120 yards, two TDs), New Mexico (11 catches, 167 yards), and this season against Wyoming (12 receptions, 117 yards). But it could be a sign of things to come for the Wolf Pack's Air Raid attack, and that's not great news for the Mountain West secondaries still scheduled to try and contain Doubs. With senior wideout Elijah Cooks out with an unspecified shoulder injury, Strong's most experienced option becomes Doubs, who has appeared in 27 career games and caught 105 passes. He enrolled at USC early out of Mater Dei High, then transferred to Texas later that month. But before the summer, McCoy had transferred back from Austin to Los Angeles. He never played in a game as a true freshman, though, because he did not apply for a waiver from the NCAA and because of a fever that kept him off the practice field until USC's bowl preparations. McCoy can finally play in 2020, and the hype around the former five-star recruit has been big during training camp. Coaches have raved about his play. Defensive backs have talked about what a tough cover he is in practice. 10/31/20 - QB Hendon Hooker, rSr/2023, Tennessee + More +   Hendon Hooker was perfect from the air and ran for three scores to lead Virginia Tech to a 42-35 victory over Louisville Saturday. The junior quarterback went 10-of-10 for 183 yards passing to supplement a rushing attack that garnered 283 yards for the Hokies (4-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). He contributed 68 of those yards on the ground. About three hours before kickoff, Louisville (2-5, 1-5) announced nine players would be unavailable for undisclosed reasons. That included leading solo tackler Monty Montgomery, starting free safety Isaiah Hayes and three of the Cardinals top four defensive ends - Yaya Diaby, Tabarius Peterson and Dayna Kinnaird. The Hokies, who entered Saturday with the nation's third-best rushing offense, came out rolling. CJ Marable added two rushing touchdowns and 100 all-purpose yards for the Chanticleers (6-0, 4-0 Sun Belt Conference). Coastal Carolina has its most wins in a single season since joining FBS in 2017. Georgia State (2-3, 1-3) looked nothing like the team that began the day leading the Sun Belt in scoring at 42 points per game. The Panthers' previous two losses were by a combined 10 points with both coming down to the final possession. The Chants struck first to take a 7-0 lead on Heiligh's 35-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Travis Etienne became the ACC's all-time rushing leader and his second TD put the Tigers (7-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) ahead for good. A jarring week for Clemson ended with its 28th straight win over league competition, 10th straight over the Eagles and 27th in a row at home. Clemson was missing several key players. Lawrence was out after testing positive for the virus and starting linebackers James Skalski and Mike Jones Jr. were missing because of injuries. The Eagles (4-3, 3-3) took advantage, putting Clemson in a 28-10 hole in the second quarter with the virus-reduced crowd stunned to near silence. 10/29/20 - QB Graham Mertz, rSr/2025, Florida + More +   A COVID-19 outbreak has put the University of Wisconsin football season on hold after just one game. The Badgers will pause football activities for at least seven days after a dozen people in the program, including coach Paul Chryst and starting quarterback Graham Mertz, tested positive for COVID-19 in the past five days. The Badgers, ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, decided they cannot play their scheduled game Saturday at Nebraska. A Big Ten Conference spokesman said the game will not count toward either team's record. The 12 people who tested positive include six players and six staff members. The program is in the process of providing hotel rooms for seven days in order to separate players who live together to combat the virus' spread. UW athletic director Barry Alvarez said the program does not know what caused the outbreak. Najee Harris caught six passes out of the backfield for 61 yards while Metchie continued his breakout season. His seven-catch, 151-yard afternoon marked his second triple-digit performance as a favorite Jones downfield option. The Canadian averages 23.8 yards per catch with 21 receptions in his first season starting. "He's a strong receiver he's got good quickness he's got really strong hands," Saban said. "I think he's a smart guy. He really plays the game well, pays attention to detail runs good routes. And he's fast. And he's quick out of a break." Metchie said word of Waddle's injury reached the sideline a few drives into the game but they had to dial in on the job at hand. "I think we did good," Metchie said. "It's part of the sport. Guys get banged up and it's the next-man-up mentality in fighting through it as a unit and as a team." Waddle is no small presence to replace.
