First, it was a simple out route and a four-yard pickup on second down. Then, USC quarterback Kedon Slovis went back to one of his newer targets on an inside slant for 11 yards and the first down.' Two plays later, the big physical receiver ducked under a tackle and turned a short gain into 23 yards and an entry point in the red zone. It was a critical opening drive to the second half as USC attempted to build a two-possession lead over Utah, and on three out of four plays the Trojans went to redshirt f reshman receiver Bru McCoy. In a position group filled with veterans and other young up-and-comers like himself, McCoy has established himself in the USC receiver hierarchy this year. Slovis and offensive coordinator Graham Harrell have trusted him to be the fourth man on the field, and he's shown up for those moments.Like that drive against Utah, like his tipped touchdown reception in the wild comeback against Arizona State. "He's been kinda taking his role and just starring in it, whatever it i s, if it's five plays, if it's 20 plays, if it's 30 plays, he just goes as hard as he can and he just tries to make plays," receivers coach Keary Colbert said Wednesday. "He's a very hardworking young man. Football means a lot to him." Irish head coach Brian Kelly said Lenzy will "just let it go" this week. So for the first time since reinjuring his hamstring against Pittsburgh on Oct. 24, Lenzy is expected to be unleashed in Notre Dame's offense. The junior should add another dimensio n to the Irish attack with his elite speed. Lenzy could use a solid performance to establish himself before Notre Dame competes against tougher opponents in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 19 and beyond. Elad is off to a great start. In only his second year at Ohio University, Elad has held down the nickelback position. Nickelback is one of the toughest positions to play on defense because it incorporates roles from the linebacker, cornerback and safety positions. When Elad moved to Cleveland as a freshman in high school he played cornerback for St. Ignatius. Elad has been able to use some of the techniques he learned to help him learn his new role. What may have been his greatest lesson, however, was t he wisdom he received from T.J. Carrie, a former Bobcat who currently plays for the Indianapolis Colts. At the time, Carrie played for the Browns so when Elad ran into him at a movie theater in Cleveland, he had to strike up a conversation. Carrie played nickelback for the Bobcats so there was nobody better to talk to. "I talked to him a couple times on the phone about it," Elad said. "And he was telling me the exact same thing about he was playing nickel and how he was playing the hybrid position." - T he Post

For an Indiana team that has dreams of finishing off a special season with its first Big Ten title since 1967, it's a pressure spot. But those who know Tuttle best say he has a big arm and a cool demeanor. That will be put to the test, beginning at Wisco nsin, then continuing with a rivalry game against Purdue, and then, possibly, the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis if Ohio State doesn't qualify due to not reaching six games played. "He's not a get in your face kind of guy," said Brandon Huffma n, a national recruiting editor for 247Sports who covered Tuttle's recruitment out of Mission Hills High in San Marcos, California. "He's not a loud, boisterous personality. He's not a guy that's going to go on Twitter and tweet every minute something mo tivational that somebody else wrote years ago. He's just kind of a real salt of the earth type, quiet guy who just goes about his business."The son of former IU walk-on kicker Jay Tuttle, Jack Tuttle grew up in suburban San Diego, where by his sop homore year, he was on the radar of college programs throughout the country. He was rated a top-five pro-style quarterback nationally by both Rivals and 247Sports. Alabama coach Nick Saban recruited him. So did nearby USC. Illinois running back Mike Epstein is one of 42 college football players on the Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year Award's revised watch list, which was released Tuesday. Epstein, a junior, suffered a season-ending knee injury in last year's opener against Akron and, coming into the 2020 campaign, last scored a touchdown on Oct. 5, 2018, against Rutgers. Epstein and sophomore running back Chase Brown have formed a potent dual threat in the Illini backfield this year, with Epstein compiling 338 rush ing yards and a team-high four rushing touchdowns through five games. Peters has had a particularly tough run of the season. He missed three games with a positive COVID test, returned for a blowout win against Nebraska on Nov. 21 and must wait until Saturday's home game against No. 24 Iowa to take the field again. That mea ns, if he plays each of the remaining three games, Peters will have played five games in his senior season - with the possibility of a bowl game making it six. All college football teams are eligible for bowl games this year. Playing just two games by th e time the calendar flipped to December isn't exactly what he anticipated going into his senior season."It's really hard," Peters said. "You've got to understand circumstances and why these things are happening but at the same time it takes a toll on you mentally a little bit. It is frustrating because you want to be out there every Saturday. This is the first season something like this has happened where the game can be taken from you in an instant and unexpectedly. "Mentally, it's challenging, especially when you prepare all week and you feel like everybody is ready for the game, you have a lot of momentum and stuff like that. Redshirt sophomore Jack Tuttle made his season debut after Penix was injured and completed 5 of 5 passes for 31 yards. He played in five games last season and completed 6 of 11 passes for 34 yards. "Jack Tuttle is a special player, too," Allen said. Alth ough UW's coaches don't have much video of Tuttle with the Hoosiers, they are familiar with his skills from his days as a touted prospect at Mission Hills High School in California. UW recruited Tuttle, who signed with Utah before transferring to Indiana . "You try to do your best," UW coach Paul Chryst said of preparing for a new quarterback. "Obviously, when you don't have as much film it makes it a little bit more challenging. Yet you see enough and you know what they're trying to do offensively. "You 've just got to do your best in your preparation."UW cornerback Faion Hicks insisted the members of the defense can't slack off in preparation during the week or in focus on Saturday because of the injury to Penix. "They're still a really good off ense," he said. "He's not the only one who made plays for them. Charles Snowden, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury against Abilene Christian, was named a 2020 Butkus Award semifinalist. The award goes to the best linebacker in college football, and Snowden is one of 16 semifinalists. Before suffering his inju ry, Snowden tallied 44 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. After a slow start to the season, he caught fire in October. Snowden posted a four-sack game against North Carolina in one of the better individual showings of any linebacker th is fall. The talented linebacker isn't sure if he'll declare for the NFL Draft in the spring or take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to return for one final season with the Cavaliers. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Georgia landed a pair of players Monday on the Butkus Award semifinalist list for the nation's top linebacker. Senior Monty Rice and sophomore Nakobe Dean were two of 16 players announced to make the cut including eight from the SEC. Georgia is the only school that placed two on the list. Georgia's Roquan Smith won the award in 2017. Dean leads Georgia with 63 tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks and nine quarterback pressures. - Athens Daily Banner

Cameron Rising lasted all of 14 plays as the University of Utah's starting quarterback. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham opened his Tuesday morning Zoom press conference by announcing that Rising, a redshirt sophomore who won the starting job out of fall camp , is out for the season after sustaining a shoulder injury early in the second quarter of Saturday night's 33-17 season-opening loss to USC. Jake Bentley, who went 16-for-28 for 171 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in relief of Rising, will start this weekend The Utes were scheduled to play Arizona State on Sunday, but with the Sun Devils dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak, that game was canceled by the Pac-12 late Tuesday afternoon.
