The first top-10 shakeup in more than a month pushed Coastal Carolina to No. 9 in The Associated Press college football poll on Sunday. Alabama was a unanimous No. 1, followed by Notre Dame, Ohio State, Clemson and Texas A&M as those teams held their spots for a sixth straight week. Surprising losses by Florida and Miami shuffled the rest of the top 10. No. 6 Cincinnati and No. 7 Indiana each moved up one spot and No. 8 Iowa State jumped two. Then come the unbeaten Chanticleers (11-0), the first Sun Belt Conference team to crack the AP's top 10. Georgia landed at No. 10 ahead of Florida at 11. The Gators dropped five spots after losing in bizarre and dramatic fashion to LSU in the fog Saturday night. Miami plummeted 10 spots to No. 19 after getting blown out by North Carolina. Jaivon Heiligh caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Grayson McCall with 45 seconds left and No. 11 Coastal Carolina preserved its first perfect regular season with a 42-38 win over Troy on Saturday. McCall needed just 45 seconds to move the Chanticleers (11-0, 8-0 Sun Belt Conference), who didn't have any timeouts, 75 yards for the winning score. He completed all four of his passes on the drive, three of them to Heiligh. They survived a sandwich game between an upset of then-No. 8 BYU and the league title game against No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Trojans (5-6, 3-4) didn't make it easy for the highest-ranked team to visit Veterans Memorial Stadium. Backup quarterback Jacob Free, who replaced an injured Gunnar Watson in the fourth quarter, hit Tray Eafford on a 6-yard touchdown with 1:20 left. The play was set up with an interception by star middle linebacker Carlton Martial, who also had 21 tackles. McCall completed 24 of 29 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns. JT Daniels threw three touchdown passes, two of them to George Pickens as No. 12 Georgia broke away from Missouri 49-14 Saturday. Zamir White ran for 126 yards and a score while Georgia (7-2) dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Missouri (5-4) managed just 200 yards of offense after topping the 600-yard mark each of the past two weeks. The game was tied at 14 when Pickens reached to his shoe tops to gather in a 36-yard touchdown toss from Daniels in the final minute of the first half. The pair connected again on the first drive of the second half, with Pickens catching a short pass on a slant route, stepping out of a tackle attempt and racing 31 yards for a score. Daniels completed 16 of 27 passes for 299 yards. Pickens caught five passes for 126 yards and James Cook caught a TD pass and ran for a score. - George/AP College Football

There are several players on the roster that will have NFL opportunities in 2021, including tight end Matt Bushman, nose tackle Khyiris Tonga and junior quarterback Zach Wilson, who has been discussed as a first or second round NFL draft choice by the national media. Bushman, who suffered a season-ending injury in fall camp, would have the option to return for another senior season. He recently joined the 2021 EXOS NFL Combine program, which would indicate that he might be ready to move on. - Daily Herald

The injury Kayden Lyles suffered against Indiana likely will force Wisconsin's starting center to miss the remainder of the 2020 season. "I think that is probable," UW offensive coordinator/line coach Joe Rudolph said during a Zoom session Wednesday. "He won't be back most likely in the next couple weeks for sure." The Badgers (2-2) close the regular season Saturday at Iowa (5-1) and then could play Minnesota during the league's Champions Week. A potential bowl game is to be determined. Lyles, a redshirt junior who started the first four games, suffered a right leg injury on UW's second series in the loss to Indiana. - Journal Sentinel

Although the game was put together with just a couple of days notice, the BYU-Coastal Carolina game was the biggest game of the season for the Cougars. And it was as well for college football fans. Saturday's matchup was ESPNU's most-viewed game since 2015 and fifth-most viewed all-time. A total live audience of 1,425,000 viewers across TV and digital platforms, including ESPNU, ESPN2 bonus coverage and streaming, saw the Chanticleers pull of an upset over the Cougars. - Salt Lake Tribune

Lake hardly looked like someone who had been forced to sit in a room the previous two weeks as a result of contact-tracing protocols related to COVID-19, missing games against Oregon and Arizona. His return was all the more special because Carnell was allowed to attend the game at Sun Devil Stadium as part of a contingent of family members permitted access. Father and son celebrated the next day by watching more game footage, including some involving the Trojans. "He gave me some tips and some pointers for them because he's a resource I want to use," Quentin said. "He's played at UCLA, played in the league, so it's critical to get some advice from him."

Quentin is part of a resurgent Bruins defense that leads the Pac-12 Conference with 18 sacks and is giving up 229.4 yards passing per game, less than half of the school-record 515 it yielded to Slovis last season. UCLA hasn't faced a passing attack as potent as the Trojans' but won't cower in its cleats Saturday. "It's a challenge," Lake said, "but it's not a challenge that we can't overcome." - Los Angeles Times

Defensive lineman Josh Black will take advantage of a new, one-time rule by the NCAA and return to Syracuse for a sixth year of college football. Black can play the 2021 season because the NCAA granted leniency for fall athletes, giving them an additional year of eligibility given the disruption caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic this past year. He announced Tuesday morning on Twitter he's taking it and that he'll do so at Syracuse. "I have been through everything here with Coach Babers and the crew, and my journey at Syracuse is not over just yet," Black wrote. "It is my duty to lead and get Syracuse back on track. I wouldn't trade this team for the world, and we will be better. Thanks for all the endless support. I'm orange for life." - The Post-Standard

Dayo Odeyingbo, the senior standout defensive end, has opted out of the remaining two games, 247Sports.com reported. He is not on the depth chart, and Odeyingbo's mother confirmed his decision in a Twitter thread. That means Vanderbilt's best defensive player won't face the Vols. Odeyingbo leads the team with nine quarterback hurries, eight tackles-for-loss and 5 1/2 sacks. He is headed to the Senior Bowl and, presumably, the NFL Draft. - Tennessean

On Saturday, Washington would be wise to include Otton in every aspect of its offense. "Cade Otton, I say he's one of the best in the country because I know what the NFL's looking for," Lake said. "They're not looking for guys to just flex out and catch passes all day. They want a guy that can line up on the outside of an offensive tackle, kick out a 9-technique, double down on a 6-technique (defensive end or outside linebacker), drive guys off the line of scrimmage, double up to a linebacker and seal him off so they have the run game going on offense, and then be able to release and go make catches. "For the tape that I've seen, Cade Otton is one of the best in the country. You guys have seen his production in the last few weeks here. What you may have not seen is all the excellent things he does in the run game. But if you watch it close, it's phenomenal." His pass-catching production is also phenomenal - more so in the second half. - Seattle Times

No UA defender has more pass breakups in the last five games than cornerback Josh Jobe, who's broken up five passes in that stretch. Jobe was targeted by LSU multiple times on the opening possession and has been through many recent games, given Patrick Surtain II's track record, but he has recently produced against increased targets. "The big thing is we didn't give up explosive plays when we were in coverage," UA coach Nick Saban said. "I think Josh has done a really good job for us. There's a science to the way Jake Hansen approaches forcing fumbles, one he's apparently mastered. The Illinois linebacker doesn't frantically flail at the football, simply hoping he will jar it out of the defender's hands. He's methodical. When he hopped on the back of former Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor last season to force the ball free at a crucial moment in what turned out to be an upset of the then-No. 6 Badgers? That was something he noticed in film. There's a method to his madness and it's translated to 10 career forced fumbles, which is tied for third in program history behind Simeon Rice (13) and Whitney Mercilus (11). In the last two seasons, Hansen has been involved in 14 total takeaways, which is five more than his closest competition.

"I don't know a lot of guys who can strip the ball away (10) times in his career," linebacker Milo Eifler said. "He's been doing that for a long time. For him it's muscle memory...To play with somebody that special and that dedicated to stripping the ball, it helps our defense that much more." Hansen is 13th in the Big Ten with 51 tackles, 11th in tackles for a loss (6.5), tied for second in forced fumbles (2), fumbles recovered (2) and tied for fourth in interceptions (2). He and Syracuse linebacker Mikel Jones are the only two linebackers in the nation with multiple interceptions, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries in 2020. - Herald-Review Times

Memphis has battled normal wear and tear this season but 2020 has seen the Tigers, like most teams, handle unexpected attrition during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tigers suffered another loss Monday with senior defensive tackle O'Bryan Goodson announcing via Twitter he suffered a season-ending injury. Goodson's statement also said he played his final game with the Tigers. He was on the sidelines but didn't play in the Tigers' loss at Tulane last Saturday. His last appearance came at Navy where Memphis won first time at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Goodson started 44 of 46 games, including 10 as a true freshman in 2017. He finished his Memphis career with 27.5 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and being named an all-AAC honorable mention in 2019. He also has the option to use an extra year of eligibility as granted by the NCAA if he elects to play elsewhere. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The 2020 football season was never going to be normal, so if NIU was ever going to go winless, the Huskies sure picked the right season in which to do it. Not that an 0-6 season is in the books, as the Huskies still have a game against a 1-4 Eastern Michigan team on the road next week. Of course, that's the same Eagles team that just handed Western Michigan its first loss of the year. But the Huskies have shown flashes all year. On Saturday in a 41-24 loss to Toledo, Harrison Waylee was the latest to show a positive glimpse into the future. The true freshman ran for 114 yards and found the end zone for the first time in his collegiate career. NIU coach Thomas Hammock said he saw a big game from Waylee coming.

"I told the offensive staff, this guy is about to take off," Hammock said. "I saw it in practice, and I said there's normally a moment you see with a back where it clicks for him. And I think it clicked for him. He's going to be a special player. It's hard to describe...He's going to be a problem in this conference." Waylee said he was aiming for a big contest throughout practice. "The week of practice, all I was thinking was I've got to get better," Waylee said. "I've got to improve on top of that. I practiced really well. I gave a lot during practice and just had to make it show on the field." - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

The Orange senior put an end to any speculation by announcing that he'd intend to take advantage of the NCAA offered extra season of eligibility to fall sport athletes due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, and return to Syracuse for another season. He'll enter the 2021 campaign with 48 games played, 120 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and an interception. He started every game of the past-two seasons for the Orange, and his return provides veteran presence to a defense otherwise littered with youth. Syracuse started six freshmen in each of its last two games of the season, with Black being one-of-three seniors on the unit. - Syracuse Football
