Former Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth will stay in the state of Pennsylvania to begin his professional career, after being selected No. 55 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was the third Penn State player to be drafted after Micah Parsons and Odafe Oweh went in the first round. Freiermuth should be an immediate impact player for the Steelers, as long as he's healthy. The tight end missed the last portion of Penn State's 2020 season due to a s houlder injury that required surgery. He was healthy enough to run drills at Penn State's March pro day but did not do any testing. He is a high-quality all-around tight end who can stay on the field in all situations. Freiermuth is a good run blocker wh o relies more on his strength and physicality than technique when asked to take on defenders in the run game and when he helps offensive tackles in the passing game. He will have plenty of time to improve his technique, which should help him become one o f the best blocking tight ends in the NFL. - Centre Times

If someone would've told Andre Cisco during his final two years of high school football at IMG Academy in Florida that he would be returning to the Sunshine State four years later as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, he wouldn't have believed them. " He would've said when, where and how? Because it was definitely a long road for me," said Cisco, who became the 65th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday night. "It wasn't clear. It was hard to say how it was going to happen, but I'll say going to IMG is what opened up my eyes to me believing in myself and making that next step to say I'm dedicated."Cisco, a 6-foot-1, 216-pound safety, became the highest-drafted player for the Syracuse football program since 2013 on Friday night. He was in Atlant a surrounded by a group of family and friends when he got the life-changing call. "It means everything. One of the focuses for UVa's defense this spring has been getting more one-on-one pass rush from its defensive line. And Saturday, it appeared to be making progress. Just 9½ of UVa's 32 sacks last season came from defensive linemen. Getting back end Aar on Faumui, who opted out of the 2020 season, figures to give the team a big boost in that department. Malcolm Koonce will head to the NFL, and he'll do so as the first University at Buffalo football player drafted in four years. The Las Vegas Raiders selected the Bulls' defensive end with pick No. 79 in the third round Friday in Cleveland. UB's recent su ccess on the field and in player development has helped cultivate more professional prospects. The selection capped a remarkable 2020 season and postseason for Koonce, who skyrocketed up mock drafts this spring. That was despite not working out during UB 's pro day in March due to a broken metatarsal in his foot. "I was being myself throughout the whole process," Koonce told reporters via the Mercury News. Trevor Downing's Operation Recovery looks to be complete. If Iowa State opened the season now, instead of Sept. 4 against Northern Iowa at Jack Trice Stadium, he'd back where he started. He'd be the No. 1 left guard on a very good offensive line again. T hat's the word from offensive coordinator Tom Manning, who told reporters Wednesday that Downing might be better than ever. "He's been playing with the ones," Manning said. "That's been a really good thing for us to see. He had a really good winter, with (strength coach Dave Andrews). That's paid big dividends for him. He's 100 percent back to normal. He's been really good. He feels healthy. He certainly looks stronger than prior to his injury." That was about the only question mark remaining for an off ense that's essentially intact from last season - not only among the starters, but throughout the depth chart. Downing's good health means an exceptionally deep offensive line will have a combined 93 career starts among seven players when the season begi ns. Jameson Williams became the latest Ohio State football receiver to look elsewhere for an opportunity. Cleveland.com confirmed that Williams, a starter throughout the 2020 season, has entered the transfer portal. Matt Zenitz of al.com first reported the d evelopment on Wednesday. Williams was the third receiver behind Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave in 2020. Despite playing all eight games, he totaled just 154 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions. His role was expected to decrease in 2021, as Jaxon Smith-Njigba is projected to start in the slot. Caleb Kelly can't escape the jokes. Just this spring, OU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch slipped one in. Standing in front of the room, Grinch ended a phrase with "even like eight years ago, Caleb Kelly." Even head coach Lincoln Riley recently got a s hot in about Kelly's extended college career. "I'm used to it now because it's been going on for like two years now," Kelly said. "Now here on like my third senior year, 'Oh yeah, I'm the old guy. I get it.' "But it's funny when they joke about six year s and it's actually my sixth year."Kelly is a 23-year-old linebacker. This September will mark his sixth season with the Sooners. He's the last player from the Bob Stoops era. It's why Kelly was beaming after actually playing in Saturday's annual spring game - his first meaningful action in pads in front of fans for the first time since Dec. 28, 2019 in the Peach Bowl. It's quite evident that Baylor's defense is significantly ahead of the offense since new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes has just started installing the parts this spring. But Saturday's Green and Gold game at McLane Stadium showed that it isn't just a bevy of returning players who could make the defense one of the best in the Big 12 this fall. The Bears now have massive 6-4, 350-pound noseguard Siaki "Apu" Ika plugging the middle. The LSU sophomore transfer made his presence known in the intrasquad s crimmage as he burrowed through Baylor's offensive line to nail running back Qualan Jones for a safety while wreaking havoc on many other plays. "That's a force," said Baylor running back Abram Smith. "I ran into him today. He shot the A (gap) and hit me in the backfield. And I couldn't get away."Ika began to show his talents on LSU's 2019 championship team in a backup noseguard role under then defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. After playing in only four games last season, Ika entered the transf er portal and decided to reunite with Aranda at Baylor. Joining a defense packed with veteran linebackers and defensive backs, Ika's presence in the middle will occupy blockers and free up Baylor's other defensive linemen to make plays. "I love Apu and h is energy, I love his smile, I love his heart," Aranda said. "He knows the structure of the defense and the run fits. He knows protection and he's been able to tutor people on the sidelines. Early in spring practice, OU football coach Lincoln Riley went through the list of players getting work at center as the Sooners work to find a replacement for Creed Humphrey. Riley went through four names - Chris Murray, Ian McIver, Robert Congel and Na te Anderson. Andrew Raym wasn't among that group. But speaking Wednesday, three days before OU's Saturday spring game, which kicks off at 4 p.m. and will be televised on Bally Sports Oklahoma, Raym appears to be getting not only a hard look at the spot b ut might be in best position to start the season there. "I've worked myself into a center spot now and I'm taking those reps with the first team," Raym said. "I love center. I love being out there commanding the offense." Humphrey's departure leaves a si gnificant hole to fill for Bill Bedenbaugh's group and finding that replacement has been at the top of the Sooners' offensive priority list through the spring. Raym, a Broken Arrow product, didn't see time at center in high school, making his debut at th e position at the Under Armour All-America Game in January 2020. Washington outside linebacker Zion Tupuola-Fetui, a third-team AP All-American selection last season, will miss the next six to 10 months after tearing his Achilles tendon in practice last week. Washington coach Jimmy Lake said Wednesday that the Huskies are not ruling Tupuola-Fetui out for the entire 2021 season as of yet. Tupuola-Fetui is expected to undergo surgery later this week. Despite playing just three games last fall, Tupuola-Fetui was a revelation in his first season as a starter for the Husk ies. He had seven sacks and 13 tackles. Air Force football is proceeding with a plan to fully open Falcon Stadium to fans this fall, packing a place that spent the 2020 season empty except for cadets. The academy announced on Twitter that the 2021 season includes "plans for full capacity." "We will continue to monitor state and local health guidelines as we will coordinate with public health to ensure a safe fan experience for all," athletic director Nathan Pine in a statement on social media. The Falcons will host six games - Lafayette (Sept . 4), Utah State (Sept. 18), Florida Atlantic (Sept. 25), Wyoming (Oct. 9), San Diego State (Oct. 23) and UNLV (Nov. 27). Despite losing Chazz Surratt to the NFL, this group is still loaded with players that have gotten stronger, smarter and more explosive in the off-season. There are currently 17 linebackers on the roster but this article will focus on the top nine that wi ll most likely see playing time this coming season. The two incoming freshmen, Raneiria 'Rara' Dillworth and Power Echols, will not be part of that group barring an unforeseen circumstance. It is not a reflection of their talent but just that they need m ore time to develop physically. At the middle linebacker position, we will begin with the two most likely starters. They are Jeremiah Gemmel and Eugene Asante. Gemmel is the quarterback of the defense who was a team captain in 2020. He had 78 tackles, si x tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble. Florida State transfer receiver D.J. Matthews Jr. was named one of the two most outstanding offensive players this spring, while Ole Miss transfer defensive end Ryder Anderson was named one of the two most outstanding defensive players. Both should figur e prominently into IU's plans in the 2021 season. The 5-foot-10, 153-pound Matthews came to IU as an established receiving and return threat in three seasons in the ACC with the Seminoles. "He had a really good spring," Allen said. "It was from Day 1, I think he might have got offensive player of the day the first practice he had, just his quickness, very, very good route runner, not a very big guy but extremely quick, also good speed, really good ball skills, had a great attitude, just a really likeabl e person." Allen said the plan is for starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to be ready for the season opener Sept. 4 at Iowa. But Allen won't play Penix if he's less than 100% as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL he suffered last November. Backup quarterback Jack Tuttle got the majority of reps this spring, especially after third-string quarterback Dexter Williams went down early in spring drills with a torn ACL, which leaves IU dangerously thin at the position. Tuttle passed for 362 yards with two TDs and o ne interception last season, going 1-1 as a starter and leading the Hoosiers to a win at Wisconsin. "Whenever he's going to be called upon, he's going to be ready, and I believe that," Allen said. "It's a special thing to have, and it's important." Allen felt Tuttle improved this spring in his ability to call checks at the line scrimmage and with ball security. Gunner Gentry figured to play a larger role out wide for Wyoming next season. Now the Cowboys are just hoping their junior receiver is able to return to action at some point this fall. Gentry is expected to miss "several months" after recently injuring h is patellar tendon, UW coach Craig Bohl said. Bohl added Gentry is expected to fully recover from the knee injury, but exactly how long that process will take is a guess. "Any time I make these statements, sometimes I overestimate the amount of time they 're going to be out, but I would think it would be doubtful that he'd be back at the first part of the fall," Bohl said. "And he may miss all of fall depending on his rehab." The younger brother of former UW standout Tanner Gentry, Gentry has just eight career receptions.
